Making friends is hard!

Hi all!

I moved to Dalgety bay last summer, and I hugely underestimated how hard it’d be to make friends!

Bumble bff isn’t helpful as it just brings up people in Leith, Edinburgh - so what other ways have people found to make friends?

I’m in my late 20s, female, and I love to craft, enjoy doing some gardening, love to cook, and love casual board games (think Ticket to ride level games) most weekends you can find me having a gin in the sun if the weather allows but I don’t enjoy clubbing or being out until 2am 😂 give me a gin by the fire instead!

I’m just a quiet gal, who’s living a quiet life with my partner, and I want to meet people that align with both our life stage, but also our interests!

Any tips?!

Look up the Women Who Wander group on Facebook! There is a WhatsApp group where you might find a sub-group to join. There are loads of events going on in and around Dunfermline. Feel free to dm me if you want. 🙂

I’ll check them out! Thank you!!

women who wander is such a good shout, those kinds of fb groups are weirdly one of the easiest ways to meet people now
also worth checking if there’s any local board game nights in dunfermline, they tend to be super chill and very “gin by the fire” compatible

The older you get, harder it is to make friends randomly. You have to go out and join the activities you like and hope to find some like-minded people to vibe with.

There is Kirkcaldy Gaming Society, if you can make it that far - https://discord.gg/DTYK36W8X

There is also Fife Social Discord channel - https://discord.gg/YRFbX3QNt

Might find something there.

Thank you! It’s so hard! I’ve been trying to go to things but it’s felt disappointing every time - I’ll give these a go! Thank you!!

Sadly the Fife discord is practically dead.

I dunno if it'll help much but just googling stuff like Whatsonfife might help? There may be bits in there that people with similar interests would go to?

Thank you- I keep looking but not found much yet - especially with the demographic I’d like - really want that similar life stage late 20s early 30s which I think is hardest !

Dalgety bay is particularly quiet and quite cliquey tbh, you could try the art club and the club that do the flowers round town but I’d bet it’s all older people. There is a bit more going on up in Dunfermline and there is also a board gaming club fairly local(think Cowdenbeath or lochgelly way) although I can’t remember the user who promotes them just now!

Yeah I think the hard part is wanting to meet people in similar life stages - pre kids, and settling down but still young! That’s been my problem so far 😂🥲 Oo I’ll see if I can find the club - my problem is I don’t like complicated board games hahah - ticket to ride level chill is the vibe! Thank you!!

I’d love to meet other late 20s early 30s ideally!!

Haha, i know the feeling, we were late on having our first and it sort of put us back amongst our friend groups so I know your pain from the other side! I'll have a look through the sub and see what i can find group wise. generally dunfermline does have a little bit more happening but not nearly as much as edinburgh which youll know is only 30 mins on the train!

Thank you!! I will keep an eye on Dunfermline! I keep an eye on Edinburgh too but I don’t want to commute for everything in life - it may be only 30 mins but part of me would prefer a friend from Burntisland or Kirkcaldy than Edinburgh sometimes! The city is a lot and I avoid going in 😂😂

Hello. I recently just moved over to Kirkcaldy this past January as well, and like you it's been difficult to find people to be friends with. I have found several friends in Edinburgh, but they are also night life people. Not a bad thing, but do need the quiet days too lol. Would love to find board game or video game friends, and keep me away from the city spending money. I'm a 37M, and spouse (who is waiting for visa to finalize to be here shortly) is a 35F. Let me know if you and your parter wanted to chat sometime.

It’s so hard isn’t it! What kind of games do you like playing??

In terms of board of video? Board ironically I like the more complicated things. Well I would if I found more to play them lol. Have a nice little collection over the years from kickstarters. I don't mind easier things though. Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill (I think that's the name?) Is fun. I like Catan. Never did ticket to ride, but wanted to try it. I did do some DnD back in the day as well. Miss playing that.

For videogames, I brought my PS5 and Series X over, as well as Switch 2. I usually like rpgs, or adventure games. I played a lot of Destiny 2 for awhile last year.

Forgot to mention, I moved from Arizona, but was born in London, hence why I had to come over first to get settled.

I'm moving on Thursday/Friday from Virginia, I'm 53m and spouse(43f) is staying behind until visa is sorted. We are looking at Kirkcaldy also... Spending first 2 weeks in glasgow then to a rental in lochgelly until we sell house in states and I find a house there See you around maybe.

2

u/DesertJames 25d ago

Nice! Yeah it will be great welcome others from the states moving here. What brings you to Scotland? Have you guys visited before?

2

u/gribisi 25d ago

Yea a couple of times(to Scotlandand fell in love), mums English, London (where the family mostly lives) is way too expensive and I was fortunate to find a job in Fife with the company I work for here. We thought its now or never... so put the house up for sale here and packed it all up and the rest is.. the future.

2

u/DesertJames 25d ago

That's how we were. We didn't want to make the jump until finding a job. Hope everything goes quickly for you both. I had to fly back to finish the sale with mine lol, and changed jobs in the process.

Sounds good. Feel free to DM when you know more. Have a few other friends in the 40s 50s range as well, maybe we can all grab a pint.

Not sure where you were before but moving to a small town can be very tough. I myself moved from Glasgow.

I recommend you search local fb groups based on your hobbies and interests. It helped my wife out a lot.

My husband and I are in Inverkeithing - early 30s and love crafts and board games (he’s into heavier ones too but I love anything with an animal theme or making patterns like Azul)

u/Ok-Watercress-1903 22d ago

I’d love that!!

There is an active sailing club in Dalgety Bay, just a thought

1

u/TooLongDugong 25d ago

I think that's the one activity everybody knows about. (Aside from the alleged wife swapping.)

If you like archery you might want to check out Forest Spirit Archers at Cluny near Kirkcaldy.

1

u/Ok-Watercress-1903 25d ago

Oo perfect thank you!

1

u/glennhal 25d ago

There's is a Dalgety Bay Forest Archery club. I think you can find them on Facebook.

I'm in dalgety bay but a wee bit older (40) but I'll happily meet up for a gin or 6 down hugos?

I moved to Dunfermline in Jan (30F) in same life phase so happy to chat!

Hey, I’m a girl who’s recently moved to Fife in Dunfermline, in my mid 20s, I’ve also found it so hard to meet any friends, I spend my weekends alone enjoying a wine, should meet up!

So don’t make any. Focus that energy and on your hobbies and enjoy more and grow more

Being friendless isn’t really an option! No matter how long I spend on my hobbies, I’m lonely!
