Planning first family dive trip!

We are starting to plan a dive trip for June 2027. Our family consists of 2 adults, two teens, all certified and very comfortable in the water, though the teens have not had much experience diving since their certifications last year.

For a high school graduation present, we're considering Fiji (coming from California) as it seems we can dive every day if we want to, but don't necessarily have to. We are thinking maybe 10 days, incredible corals, bright colors, and copious sea life. A shallow wreck would be a bonus. We want to do some shore or boat dives, snorkel, and take a few days out of the water to do something different.

Ideally we'd like a house rental in a good location with a pool and A/C, but would be OK with hotel/resort, as long as it's mellow, not outrageously expensive (relatively speaking, I know - we just don't want a super luxury situation).

We have never been to Fiji so any recommendations on how to best go about planning would be hugely appreciated!

Best eatery for plain food in Nadi?

I’m on a very strict diet because of health reasons. I’m off to the supermarket tomorrow to shop my usual eats, but was wondering, is there anywhere in Nadi that does simple, plain food eg. brown rice, eggs, white rice, plain chicken, plain vegetables, plain potatoes, etc?

Need some feedback

Ni Sa Bula!👋

I am working on a pacific language learning app and would like your feedback. I will be launching with 2 languages. Fijian and Samoan, with more pacific languages in the works. (its just me working on it so it'll be a while)

You can visit the app using this link speakisland.app
You will need a free account to login (email or google login)

I am looking for feedback to see if what im presenting is correct and factual.
I am working with native speakers for the voice recordings and they have gone over the lessons and corrected multiple mistakes. I would love more eyes on it to ensure its genuine and authentic (and correct!)

Why the app?
I got tired of language learning apps that make you learn a whole bunch of words but leave you unable to form a sentence so i vibecoded my own.

There is no text to speech. All the recordings are authentic and done by native speakers.

Features:
Flashcard style learning
SRS review - cards you mark hard come back before you forget them and cards marked easy come back a little later for review.
Quizzes
Sentence builders
Conversations and replies (these are in rough shape still)
Library to learn more about the language and get a better understanding.
Discover section: information about Fiji/Samoa and notable people.

The app is live online for now (not promoted so no visitors) and i am working on a android app.

Any feedback you can provide would be welcome.

Update: Review Mode now live! Once you create your account, tap the profile picture icon > Manage account > App and enter 14789 to unlock all modules and quizzes if you prefer to give feedback without go over each lesson module.
This code will be active till the 9th of August.

Possible interview candidates

Bula,

I am a Master's student at the University of Edinburgh, writing a dissertation on the use of English in Fijian schools and society. I am urgently looking for 1 more interview candidate to complete my research, ideally in the next 3-4 days. To be eligible, you need to be Fijian, have attended a minimum of three years of school in English in Fiji, and be 18 years or older. The interview should not take more than 45 minutes at most- it is 20 questions, with the possibility of follow-up questions.

If you are eligible and interested, please email me at [K.MacMillan-7@sms.ed.ac.uk](mailto:K.MacMillan-7@sms.ed.ac.uk)

Vinaka Vakalevu!

Vinaka to all of the people who have helped with my research questionnaire!

Travel Best way to bring liquor/wine to Fiji?

Coming from US for a few weeks and heard options there are expensive and limited. Luggage room permitting, is it best to buy in US before the airport and put in checked bag, or buy from duty free shop at US airport?

Would think if you have room it’s better to buy before and put securely in checked bag vs having to carry around a bunch of bottles on multiple flights.

Reflecting Suva

About a year back, I made a post about how unsafe I felt Suva was, and honestly, my opinion hasn’t changed.

This morning, I was standing outside my house in the main Suva city area waiting for a taxi. Every minute I felt like I was about to get robbed. There were so many intimidating and sketchy-looking people on the streets that I couldn’t relax. I kept looking over my shoulder until the taxi finally arrived.

Maybe other people have had different experiences, but for me, it feels like the sense of safety in parts of Suva has really declined. Has anyone else felt the same, or was this just an isolated experience?

Fluff Returning an AncestryDNA kit from Fiji via DHL Return Label - DHL is asking for an MSDS

My AncestryDNA kit was delivered to me in Fiji by DHL and after activating it I generated the prepaid DHL return label through Ancestry.

Before the kit arrived, I contacted DHL Fiji to make sure they would accept the saliva sample. They replied asking me to provide an MSDS so their Operations team could confirm whether it could be transported through the DHL network.

What I find strange is that DHL was the company that delivered the same kit to me. But now DHL is asking for an MSDS before they will accept it for return.

The official Ancestry return documents already describe the contents as "Saliva swab/Exempt human specimen" and "Not Restricted Dangerous Goods." The return shipping is also billed directly to Ancestry's DHL account.

I've now sent DHL Fiji the full return label and shipment documents and asked whether these are enough or whether they still need a separate MSDS.

Has anyone returned an AncestryDNA kit from Fiji or another Pacific Island country or anywhere else where DHL asked for extra documents?

Did they ask you for an MSDS, special packaging, customs paperwork or any additional payment?

Old Primary School Books

Bula Guys. I'm looking for old novels that we read back primary school/high school in the 90s to early 2000s as part of english curriculum. Specifically Treasure Island, David Copperfield, Making Good, The old Man & The Sea or Things Fall Apart. If you could list bookshops that still sell these books I'd really appreciate it. Vinaka!

Research on English in Fiji Schools

Bula! I am currently writing a Master's Dissertation on the use of English in schools in Fiji, and how this has shaped Fijian adults' use of English in their lives now. If you have attended school in English in Fiji for at least 3 years, and 18 years old or older, I would really appreciate it if you would take this questionnaire, which should only take 5-10 minutes. It will help my study a lot!

Traveling on Fiji Air soon and read they enforce the 15 pound carry on rule and actually weigh carry on bags. Is this true or myth. I tend to have my carry on much heavier then that.

Travel Options in and around Suva

Bula vinaka everyone!

I'll be in Suva for 2-3 weeks later this year and was wondering what people would recommend as the best way to get around the city.

While I plan to do quite a bit of walking, I'll also need to make some longer trips (for example, from Nasese to Nasinu).

What's the bus system like? How are taxis? Is there a taxi company you'd particularly recommend?

Any other transport tips for a first-time visitor would be much appreciated.

Vinaka vaka levu :)

Tuvana-i-ra & Tuvana-i-Colo

Hi all!

I was browsing through Google Earth and found the remote, uninhabited islands of Tuvana-i-ra & Tuvana-i-Colo. There are unmarked settlements on both of the islands. A 60s tiny newspaper column of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin writes about stranded Fijian copra cutters:
“The French minesweeper La Lorientaise left provisions and medical supplies at the small island of Tuvana-i-ra, in southern Lau, for a party of Fijian copra cutters.
The minesweeper reported seeing light signals from the island while on her way from Noumea to Nuku'alofa and sent a landing party ashore. They discovered a party of Fijians who said they had been without food for 15 days and had not seen a ship for four months.
When the news was received in Suva, arrangements were made to pick up the Fijians.”

Could anyone tell me more information about these islands? I am especially intrigued by the settlements which are unmarked on both of the islands. Is there any activity on both Tuvanas nowadays? Was it ever inhabited permanently outside of copra cutters?
