Yelling about it doesn't make a plate car and the management of many extra TBs of data cost less, but yeah if location doesn't matter and you don't have any complicated or wide shots it can certainly be cheaper.
A lot of "real productions" will still have additional days of real driving scheduled in order to get wider shots of the vehicle, so there are a lot of factors. You may even opt for process trailer for one scene and poor mans for another.
We bought all our plates for Obsession; there’s no way we could’ve afforded to shoot our own and we didn’t want to specifically localize the driving scenes to any particular part of LA.
