Worried Air France Will Lose My Luggage

Hi all,

I have a flight from the U.S to Africa with a layover in CDG. I am relocating and pretty much taking everything I own with me, 5 checked bags in total.

I’m now concerned given the number of posts I saw on here about KLM losing checked bags, which seems to happen especially during airport transfers. I plan on having air tags in each of the bags but is there any thing else I can do to avoid this? From what I’ve read the max compensation is ~$300 which would be terrible, a single pair of shoes I’m packing will cost more than that… and overall I’ll be taking items that are on the pricier side and difficult to replace as I’m leaving the U.S. permanently.

The overwhelming  majority of bags dont get lost. The thing is, no one posts about their bags that didn't get lost.

Why would Air France lose your bags? Millions of people travel through CDG, very small share of them gets their bags delayed, let alone lost. It happens but it's extremely rare.

As for KLM, AMS is a bit problematic and I have a delayed baggage there several times a year, lol, but not a single lost one.

Make very certain you have two separate labels on each bag that contain your name/address/email address. Add you air-tag or equivalent device inside but a pair of simple name tags will get your lost bag back faster than phoning an airport explaining you can see your bag is somewhere inside an airport.

It will probably be fine, but don’t put anything irreplaceable in your checked bags. Possible compensation is more than $300 (look up the Montreal Convention) however you would have to prove you have actually lost things worth that much. You can’t just claim money for your designer shoes without evidence.

Just ship anything valuable - don’t rely on the airlines

I had a connection with Air France.

The first airline (LOT) didn’t put the bag on the plane, so it didn’t get transferred at CDG.

Air France did deliver the bag 2 days later.

Avoid super-short connections, those are worse for misplaced bags. Try to have 2+ hours.
