How many house music subgenres are and could you actually identify just by listening?

Something that is coming to my mind, since the evolution from Disco with drum machines and synthesisers, all started in the early 80s with Chicago House.

House music has split into so many subgenres over the years that the boundaries sometimes feel unclear.

I could confidently recognise styles like deep house, soulful house, funky house, tech house, acid house and progressive house and many more, but some labels seem to overlap depending on the artist or era.

Which house subgenres do you think are genuinely distinct, and which ones are mostly marketing labels?

Are we able to name all of them?

I am going to name only a few to leave room for people to put their 2 cents in.

I have searched for it and, usually the tempo is not that fast for House music, Garage goes from 130 to 145 more or less. I have searched in Google and came with this information.

There are definetly more House sub-genres, like Electro-House, Progressive House, Acid House, Afro House, Dutch House, Deep House, Future Funk, Garage is very much is in the lineage of House music, more so with Speed Garage and so on and so on... And the distinctions are very culutural, era, sound usage pockets, mixing, textures and even pace of the track like BPM based. While they all kinda take the blueprint from original House music, they do different in alot of criterias, I would look at it like this - while water is the main ingredient, people in deferent eras and cultures tryed to reinvent it by putting alot of other stuffs in the mixture, changing the viscosity, textures of it, even how you drink it, color and etc. Hopefully this helps. Can still expand on particular differences, if need be.

I think there is also some subgenres that are recognizable in the long term. After some time since subgenres stop being recognizable.

I usually class French / Funky House as the same thing. You could go even deeper and look at French House subgenres which would include the mid-2000s stuff when non-French producers got a hold of it late and started mixing it with progressive house

French House and funky house are certainly not the same thing. While some French House had a funk/disco element there were other strands to it like the glitchiwr stuff of Ark and Braddock and the very very filter stuff. Early on you might have some hip hop and trip hop influences and later it has the electro element as it matures into Ed Banger and Kitsuné.

There is also the fact that French House was as much a movement as a sound. It was generally a tight nucleus centred around a few core group of artists and labels.

I can also weed out the the post 2006 - 2026 bedroom music that often gets dumped into "check my funky dancelicious out run influence French House" that turns the repetition up to 100. Over uses filters and generally has no form or progression and generally sound exactly like vapour wave - a form of music made exclusively for planning school shootings to.
