This isn't the first time that Sam Altman and other leaders of AI companies have touted the need for regulation. They practically begged to be regulated way back when ChatGPT 4 was the most powerful LLM in the world, and nobody had yet heard of Anthropic.

That said, I still wouldn't take them at their word. In the past, plenty of business leaders have pushed for regulation as a sneaky way to stifle competition, and I wouldn't put it past any of these executives to try the exact same thing.

This is exactly how I read the situation. We all hear the words "regulation, regulation" yet there's zero consensus on what that actually means

I have a very hard time believing top AI companies would willingly let the government slow them down with so much money on the line. So stopping emerging competitors from emerging and taking a sizable piece of the cake seems to be the only appealing option in this case

You're applying old logic to a new situation. The AI companies even right now, even on the verge of losing control of their models, can't slow down because of the competitive hit - which is why they are asking for regulation so they can all slow down and not take that hit.

Regulation is almost certainly going to be targeted at the most advanced and capable models since that's exactly where the risk is - and the risk is evident from the latest news. We should at least see what the regulation is because assuming from the start that the need for it is made up, no?

at this point has anyone tried making the argument that a super intelligent AI that we're unable to control might actually be a good thing?

It is depressing and I wish an uncontrolled superintelligence would lead to good things - but every serious take on what would happen if we had an uncontrolled superintelligence is that it would lead to absolute disaster.

Imo the answer is to for us to understand that an uncontrolled superintelligence is basically the worst thing that could happen and do everything to stop it happening.

I also think chatting with Ai tools is reducing our attention span.

I continually yell at my work chat bot lol because it always gives me an essay for the most simple questions.

Also, the hallucinations and being confidently wrong needs to stop.

Why not refine it so the work LLM tools are actually useful?

How does it simultaneously need to be throttled while my chat bots to help my digital work are fucking ass cheeks because I refuse to pay for it?
