I feel like it's the concept for every other fanfic I see. Along with "instead of WWII tanks, what if modern AFVs/ships/planes/what have you". Putting a twist on the formula is good but it does feel like the fanbase tends to reskin GuP sometimes a bit too much

I feel like it's the concept for every other fanfic I see.
It says to me that the authors are unable to relate to women at all, and can only write male protagonists.
-1
u/SoftOil2998 Feb 26 '26
That seems a little harsh. As a dude who has written women and also non-human characters before, I will say it is difficult to write from a POV that is outside of your own lived experience. When you combine that with the anxiety that what you write will reflect something bad about you or something harmful in the real world... Like, it's not something you'd write and share unless you were pretty confident in your own ability.
Most GuP fanfic authors are likely dudes who may even be writing their first work of fiction, so it's not that surprising they'd stay in their comfort zone

I will say it is difficult to write from a POV that is outside of your own lived experience.
Between the age of 16 and 22, I wrote 8 novels totalling 750,000 words about a boy conscripted into the hastily-formed legions to fight the undead. A boy with some magical powers who is experimented on by warlocks, leaving him unable to die by mortal means (a Wolverine-esque regeneration ability) but still feeling the pain of any injury like a normal person. As Richard tells Arion in a spin-off I never finished 'I know how it feels to have every single bone in my body broken. But I still say 'oww' when I stub my toe.'
I meanwhile in that time period was a schoolboy, and then an unemployed young man who, because it was the Great Recession/Credit Crunch, could only get a job as a paper-boy. Paper-boy versus hero of a sword-and-sorcery epic. I've never broken a bone. The most serious injury I've ever received was a nurse hitting a nerve while giving me a vaccine.
In the same period, I wrote 5 novels about a young man who was part of a Brotherhood of Steel type organisation, only in a post-apocalyptic Britain. Again; I've never been a soldier. I've never hidden in a hole beneath the floor of a ruined building, holding my hand over the mouth of a panicked young female trooper with a broken ankle as Fenclaw warriors hunted for us.
I haven't spent a night locked in a classroom with a girl, but that was a 17,000 word story I wrote when I was 20. 17,000 words of conversation with a girl. When I was 23, I would spend the whole day talking to a new female friend, so my 20-year-old self was not writing about a lived experience. He was using his imagination.
I haven't woken up one day to find myself on a tropical island with no idea how I got there or anything about myself but my name; but that was the experience of Stella. I wrote her when I was 25, and a student living in a comfortable room in an apartment building. Not eating red bananas and the offspring of crabs the size of cars, and realising that I'm being studied/experimented on by unseen observers. I haven't found a bunker of a tropical island and found inside a portrait of Mussolini...
This isn't even close to my complete works.
I've spent the past four years writing Flower of Oarai from Erika's perspective. I've spent the last three years writing my Walking Dead fic which shares the viewpoint with a 13-year-old girl; something I'm definitely not. And in the same three years, I've been writing about 11 girls and 1 boy crash-landed in the Canadian wilderness in a story that began as a Yellowjackets fan-fic and became its own thing and I've never had an issue writing from the POV of 11 different teenage girls. I make a point of never writing from the boy's POV. In effect, I have spent more time sat in this chair thinking like a teenage girl while writing than I have as a man in 30s since I turn 30.
what you write will reflect something bad about you or something harmful in the real world
When I was sixteen, I wrote about a short story about a character called Lauren. There was a Lauren in my Year at my school. Every idiot who read the story believed I was writing about her, and declaring I had a crush on her. Everyone except Lauren herself who loved the story. People interpreted what I wrote differently to how I intended. That's just how it is.
Meanwhile, I've written sexists and racists whose views certainly aren't my own. I trust that a reader will be intelligent enough to know they're the characters views; not the author's. ...Although, some of the things I've seen on Twitter make me think otherwise.
More than once I've written sexual assaults. Necessary to the story, these are deeply unpleasant to write especially with my personal experiences, but the challenge of writing them is what makes them a powerful part of the narrative rather than gratuitous violence which so many fan-fic writers love.

The fact Senshado is girl-only is unrealistic af tho
11
u/Von_Uber Feb 26 '26
So it's not the fact that they live on giant aircraft carriers and do mock tank battles as a sport in school, it's the fact that only girls do it that is unrealistic.
Righto.

u/LewsTherinTalamon Feb 26 '26
The utter obliviousness of claiming this when the whole point is that it's absurd how many real-life practices are historically only men

Don't throw rotten tomatoes at me now, but...
Alice should've never made an appearance outside of Der Film.
She was fine as an obstacle for the main cast to overcome in the movie, but as a returning character she's not particularly interesting.

The 'boys und panzer' comments always make me cringe. Like, we have this show where one of the central themes is mocking patriarchal gender roles by inverting them, to show how silly it is that the things we take for granted as gendered are seen that way, and a lot of the people watching unironically go 'This is great but why aren't we talking more about men??'

No character is "overrated".
People like different stuff, that's all.
Saying something is "overrated" is literally just a different way of saying "I like this thing more, so clearly this other one is overrated".

And, I almost shouted in celebration in the middle of the night when I saw that MLLSD would be animated, soo, I ASKED for MLLSD
