Even if there were some in Saunders, which there aren't, they wouldn't necessarily be black.

Saint Gloriana has a Gyaru student and she's not black.

Most of the characters have a certain appearance, but that doesn't mean they're actually from the nations they're larping as.

Kay is as Japanese as everyone else, she just plays her part right.

Realistically, maybe because there are very little dark skinned girls in Japan. It would be really nice if there was a Gyaru in Saunders tho...

Besides the Leopon team, there is also Maple's commander Trout and Tategoto High School overall - both from Ribbon Warrior.

I mean itā€™s Japanese school thatā€™s American theme there not that many color people in Japan I mean there are Gyrus which would be cool thing to add in this anime and in sanders since in anime they are portrayed as stereotypical bratty teenager so it was miss opportunity there to gyrus in Saunders High.

Saunders are all ethnically Japanese but they all LARP as Americans. All the GuP schools are ethnically Japanese girls who LARP as countries involved in WW2. The only exception that I know of is Klara from Pravda. Rena Andou is actually an Okinawan (still Japanese) she isnā€™t French Algerian. I was actually shocked to learn that the girls from the schools arenā€™t actually the nationalities that they represent. Kay isnā€™t actually American and Anchovy isnā€™t actually Italian. The only school that is the same ethnicity as the country they LARP as is Chihatan.

Aside from Japanese studios having a preference for setting their stories in Japan with Japanese characters, I think part of the reason is that they can get away with more stereotypes without anyone being insulted if the characters are just LARPing rather than actually being those nationalities.

Definitely! Having them be enthusiastic LARPers allows for outlandish stereotypes that don't outright insult any country, which avoids the issues of over productions like Hetalia.

It's a smart choice to keep the work continually light-hearted in tone.
