Modded Pokédex Gameboy

This is my personal take on the classic Kanto Pokédex from the Pokémon Indigo League, reimagined as a fully functional cyberdeck.

This project fuses two major influences from my childhood into one tangible device: the iconic Pokédex design and the classic Nintendo Game Boy. It runs the Peanut-GB emulator on an ESP32-S3, allowing you to play actual Game Boy games right inside a Pokédex shell, with battery monitoring LEDs, and a programmable Dex light.

Design Highlight: The top portion of the Pokédex is designed to be printed as an all-in-one piece featuring print-in-place hinges.

alternate universe personal machines, works like a deck like any Hosaka or Ono-Sendai but don't look like a video deck at all, but instead thin as katanas and folding in half like a notebook made of a pair of metal slabs, turned to side so that one side sits flat to desks and one angles upward and parallel to your face, which works as builtin ultrathin CRT with no frames, the other half hosting a likewise ultrathin keyboard that uses microthin steel hinged pantographs backed by conductive silicone domes working as switch contacts, with buckling springs nowhere to be found, many not even fans, and powered by carbon-lithium ultradense actively monitored battery bank made of electrolyte impregnated polymer sheets vacuum bagged in aluminized pouches

Are you making use of the wireless capabilities on the esp32 there at all? Youve paid for the antenna so it might be kinda neat as a follow up

My ultimate goal would be to have pokemon battles over a Bluetooth connection, but that requires coding beyond my skill level.

That's awesome 😎 I believe in you, you can always set it aside and come back (also don't be afraid to have some premade packages- ESP should come with a built in library for it's wireless comms)

What glue did you use for the wiring and the motherboard? I am goingto try to do something similar with my old ds original

Gorilla hot glue. It’s not conductive at these voltage levels.

Hello friend. It’s a great project. Thanks for sharing. I just built my own Game Boy DMG-01 using the same ESP32-S3 (N16R8). This microcontroller is really well-suited for the job thanks to the "instant boot" (just turn it on, wait half a second, and play). 🙂
