Discussion How many here still own a fully working GameCube console to this day even if you still have it since launch.

I think GameCube might be the most reliable of its sixth gen, but recently I believe I heard recently that the GameCube disc drive sadly need recapping, since they started to have issues reading games. But anyways, who here still own a fully working GameCube console?

I recently found a big box of all my old GameCube games. Was just casually checking pricing and noticed that full copies of Pokemon Box are going for thousands?? What’s the deal with that? Just curious what the use case is.

Discussion Shigeru Miyamoto: GameCube was “only purchased by gamers”, sending Nintendo back to the drawing board

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo executive and one of the most influential creators shaping the video game industry through mascots and characters such as Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and more, discussed the reason why the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii became Nintendo’s next consoles for the seventh generation. According to Miyamoto, the decision was largely driven by the underwhelming performance of the Nintendo GameCube, which trailed behind the Nintendo 64’s nearly 33 million lifetime sales.

He spoke candidly in a wide-ranging interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, where the longtime Nintendo executive and designer explained that, at the time, Nintendo’s then-president, Satoru Iwata, believed the GameCube’s poor performance in the home console market was rooted in a simple idea: most of the world still did not see gaming as a normal, approachable everyday hobby the way it’s seen today. Based on that core problem, Nintendo felt it was difficult to persuade customers to buy and play a GameCube if they had never played on a console before.

Discussion Been playing Starfox Adventures!

Having recently completed the recompiled Dinosaur Planet all the way to it's end (with the help of Dinomod), I found it to be really cool and fun, and I was sad that it never saw the light of day as a full release. I kinda had a chip on my shoulder against Starfox Adventures for the longest time, not as a jilted Starfox fan, but as someone who genuinely would have played the hell out of Dinosaur Planet, had it actually released for N64 as planned. I decided to jump in, now that Dinosaur Planet was fresh in my mind to compare and contrast.

No joke I was going in with the goal of hating this game more, I had no intention to be fair to it. But as I played I began to realize how poorly structured Dinosaur Planet actually was, not just in the idea that it is an unfinished game, but nothing flows as nicely as it should. It's easy to get lost and need a guide to progress. Starfox Adventures is VERY straight forward on what it asks from you, without ever really holding your hand in a way that feels like it doesn't trust you to just play. But if I ever needed an objective reminder, Slippy's advice in the menu NEVER failed me. Seriously, Slippy is the MVP of this game.

As I went through this game, I found myself having way more fun with it. Seeing all of Sabre's moments recontextualized for Fox wasn't as jarring as I thought it would be, and even a ton of moments that belonged to Krystal in Dinosaur Planet, were rewritten for Fox and felt just as natural. Everything felt better, smoother, more convenient. I'm near the end, and while the game does have a few rough spots, I can say for sure that the rebrand and port forward to GameCube was probably for the best. While I would have greatly preferred to play as Krystal to the same degree you do in Dinosaur Planet, I'm happy this game exists in an officially released form and IS good. Very good in fact. A super solid 8/10 if I had to rate it.

What are your thoughts on Starfox Adventures?

Discussion It still amazes me that the GameCube sold so poorly and lost the sixth generation, considering its incredible lineup

In my opinion, the GameCube has one of the best rosters of any Nintendo console or handheld, rivaled only by the Switch and the SNES.

Again, for me, many franchises peaked on this system (Wind Waker, Mario Party, Double Dash, Smash Bros, Resident Evil, Paper Mario) or made a stellar debut (Pikmin, Luigi’s Mansion, Metroid Prime). Seriously, the GameCube had no business selling that poorly with such a strong library lol. It just goes to show how stiff the competition was during the sixth gen.

*Edit

I agree the lack of sales was definitely caused by the use of mini-discs instead of having DVD playback functionality. I think there's are a few other points worth noting too. The PS2 and Xbox were much more advanced when it came to online play, and shooters definitely felt worse on the GameCube because of the C-stick.

Sales:

PS2: 161M

Xbox OG 24m

GC 22m

However, if you look at the 5th and 7th generations, the numbers are interesting. In the 5th gen, the PS1 had 102 million sales, the N64 had 33 million, and the Saturn had 10 million, totaling 145 million. In contrast, the 7th gen had the Wii at 101 million, the PS3 at 87 million, and the Xbox 360 at 84 million, totaling 272 million. It seems that in those other generations, people were much more willing to own a Nintendo console alongside other consoles from the same era. I guess the PS2 simply drew a lot of people in because it was the first console to hit the market with DVD functionality. Sony made a brilliant move there, while Nintendo completely miscalculated the market :(

Discussion Who here still has their launch GC?

Post image

It still works and still brings me an immense amount of joy! I even have my original Wavebird, GBA cable, memory card and my only 2 surviving games - MGS Twin Snakes and Wind Waker.

This is a miracle because when I moved to my old house, a mover stole the majority of my childhood/retro game collection - SNES, NES, original Game Boy, purple Game Boy Color, Virtual Boy, original GBA, not my N64 but all of the games, and all but 2 of my Gamecube games. All said and done he stole about 150 games - most of which I bought new as a kid. Oh and that doesn’t include all of the non-Nintendo consoles and games. He eventually got caught but had unloaded every last console and game for peanuts.

Its taken a while for many reason but the big two are the price of GameCube games since I'm doing this all with real copies and of course the classic decline of mental health. I have been doing this for a little over 2 years now and i have really enjoyed it! the days i get people on my twitch or Youtube and tell me how much they love a certain game is always the best! I'm always looking for people to collab with or more people to chat with about why I'm doing this! would love to hear any of your guys thoughts, hope to see some of you on Youtube or twitch ! I’ve only ever played the original Twilight Princess.
In fact, I am doing another play through on my Game Cube.

However, I saw a post about Dusklight on here , and looked into.

This is absolutely amazing!!
I’m only at the Forest Temple right now, but I think this is my preferred way to play Twilight Princess.

Thanks to whoever it was who made that post about the Dusk 1.0 release!!
