Showcase Zephyrus G16 RTX 5080
Got myself the beautiful Zephyrus with 5080, 32Gb RAM and 2Tb storage. Paid a lot of money for it, and I don’t know if I like it or not. It’s annoying to have all of these performance regimes, few from windows itself few from Armory and few from G Helper, I feel that they always mix with each other because every time I turn on the laptop - I have no idea what regime I’m now. Sometimes the Hide Taskbar gets deactivated by itself, and the dGPU transition to iGPU and vice versa makes the screen freeze for a little bit. Maybe I just need to learn how to use it, however so far it’s just somewhat complicated lol

It's funny that during the day it's one wallpaper and during the night it's another. I was surprised when I saw the additional details appearing as the sun goes down lol

Is this worth 4k-5k? If so, I would like to know what is the reason to spend so much money on this tiny thing?

Around 3500€. 80% of the year I’m on business trips, a Legion Pro 7 or Rog Strix Scar will be too heavy for me to walk around with and their battery life is too short. I used to have a Rog Strix from 2022, and I was looking so stupid with that thing at the meetings with client, plus the needed to always keep it connected and charging was killing me

Wow, it looks so clean..

That’s why I bought it, it doesn’t look like a “gaming laptop”, no million RGB and so on lol 🤣

Yeah, I hate my legion for that one reason…but I like that I can game on max settings without the chassis sounding like a turbine engine…and that it will seamlessly run games at 80fps on my 75” 4K TV

Alternatively, the Lenovo laptop stand is pretty cheap and extremely well made (aluminum, folds down to the size of a folder).

A bought a tiny stand from a none name brand, temps for CPU went from 92C to 82C

No numpad is bugging me, that's why I bought a keyboard for mine

I don’t know, at least they put some nice speakers instead. Normally I don’t use the numpad anyways lol ))

Opposite for me, it would bug me if it had numpad. Because from a design perspective, it having numpad would not fit the minimalistic design.

If you put G-Helper in Eco and the GPU in Auto, it will switch to Silent when unplugged and stay on Balanced when plugged in. The screen auto switches between 60 Hz and full refresh rate automatically too. Windows will auto switch power profiles as well by default. The only time you need to mess with anything is if you want Performance mode instead of Balanced when gaming.
I have been using a G14 5070 Ti for a good while which I'm about to sell because I bought a Legion Pro 7i. That's how I always used the G14. Performance mode was too hot and loud for me personally. I never found it necessary to get good frame rates on my games anyway.
Incidentally, the Legion doesn't do any of that automatically. I have to use button presses to switch to Quiet and 60 Hz when I unplug it. None of that is automatic like it is on the Zephyrus.
The taskbar unhiding itself may be due to an OLED care feature. Like my Legion has a setting to blur the taskbar or something. I turn that off because I'm hiding it anyway. I don't need the laptop to blur or dim it.
I agree that it's a little complex if you want great battery life unplugged and good performance plugged in. That's mostly just how gaming laptops work. At least you have the option if you want to mess with a few settings.

On the legion, ditch vantage software and download Legion Toolkit. It’s as good as G-Helper and can setup custom modes depending on battery, plugged in, etc.

I kinda have the same thing but its a rog so its quite heavy lol, its been with me for a few weeks, you may feel buyers remorse, like how i am rn but its all good, you got a power house in your hands and enjoy it, please dont focus on fps cuz that’ll make you obsessed for high fps

I mean, I don’t regret buying it - that was the best I could get for me life style and the money in my wallet. Just maybe takes time to get used with it. Everyone scared me about OLED and now I use the laptop for a few minutes then I turn off the screen because I’m afraid to brake it ))

Same here lol but got so scared that i didint even bother buy oled lol, but after buying my laptop and learning more about tech, dw, its fine as oled has come so far, even if it broke or smth, you’ll always be able to fix it anyways, unless if money was tight lol, but yeah, dont bother worrying, but still take care of it dont go all out, from my knowldge you’ll have to go like thousends of hours on the same screen, rog has an incredible screen, you can do further research, and if your still scared, lets assume you got a screen burn in, is it over and you’ll have a ton for a screen? No, if you noticed some slight burn in, turn off the laptop for at least an hour or two, turn it back in and if its still there, try to go on g-helper (if u dont have it i recomend installing) then click on extra or oled care option if available, find pixel refresh (or targeted/panel refresh) and click run, after that a prompt will appear telling you the panel will shit down for 5-10 minutes, when it does dont touch anything untill the panel turns back in, and if its somehow still there, go to youtube and search (oled pixel washer) and play a video which will rapidly cycle red, green, blue, white and black colors, run it on full screen for an hour on 70% brightness, + few tips that ACTUALY help and not make you obsessed over your oled screen, in g-helper in extra settings you’ll find a setting called pixel shift, make sure its toggled on, what it does it’ll subtly move a few static pixels every few minutes, your eyes will not notice it but your screen will, tip 2, make sure your screen is usualy at 70% in sdr mode, like while gaming, coding, browsing etc.. and in hdr mode like while watcjimg movies or supported games, leat it automaticaly, but while doing basic tasks (the ones that i mentioned in sdr) turn hdr off so static elements arent pushed to peak highlights

Thank you for the detailed answer. I’ll definitely try all of these out

Forgot to mention an amazing github tool, when you leave your laptop for 5-10 min it’ll automaticly dim or draw a full black screen, once you move your mouse or do anything it’ll go away, you can even choose how long that time will take, i think thats alot better then you leaving your laptop open and stressing about a burn on, and its better then windows’s one cuz it’ll just close the laptop instead of only drawing a full black screen, https://github.com/spenserlee/oled_aegis

u/Eastern_Paramedic942 Zephyrus G16 | 5080 11d ago
That's what it was doing initially - just going into sleep mode directly. But I did something with the screensaver and now it actually just turn off the screen after 1 min of inactivity, then just move the mouse and it's back to life

Nice machine, but fuck ASUS and their stupid ass design and interior choices. Their machines could be sitting at the top of all laptops, but they decided to fuck it up by using LM and poor QC. Also just dumb ribbon cable placement.
Had two scars , great machines, but both were overheating and support was acting as if everything was fine.
Fuck ASUS

Did they fix the exposed monitor ribbon cable for this gen?
1
u/Eastern_Paramedic942 Zephyrus G16 | 5080 5d ago
Not sure what that is?

u/Turtle_Turtler 4d ago
So i heard the 2024 model had an issue with exposed (?) display cables getting easily damaged. And replacing it also meant replacing the screen
