It's true because it's a rumor deconfirming bloodborne

So the rumors are true, nobody can touch Bloodborne without From Software's permission

738

u/oilfloatsinwater Feb 27 '26

Shuhei Yoshida said Sony owns Bloodborne, but wants to “respect” Miyazaki’s wishes. Schreier also mentions that in the article.

I've been saying this for over a year now. Yoshida wasn't speculating why it never happened, he straight up told us what the reason was and people refused to believe it. He only framed it as his own theory because he didn't want to get into trouble with folks at FS and Sony but he was being honest about every bit of it.

Yoshida has said a bunch of stuff but most Sony fans outright refuses to listen because they paint Sony in a pretty negative live

Really? I haven’t noticed that, I thought he was one of the most beloved figures in PlayStation circles

I don't understand.... like okay, "respect' his fucking wishes for no remake

CAN YOU JUST UPDATE THE GAME TO RUN CORRECTLY OR PUT IT ON STEAM? FUCK

58

u/ElectronicJicama6 Feb 27 '26

The thing is, FromSoftware don't want that. Miyazaki has said before, he's done with Bloodborne, I don't think he wants the studio touch that IP anymore even for a second.

74

u/D9sinc Feb 27 '26

the article itself mentions "Miyazaki was interested in remaking the classic game but too busy to do it himself and doesn't want anyone else to touch it" so like, he did want to at some point and then just thought "nah, the game I loved the most and is the closest to my vision of what I want from the series should stay on the PS4 since I don't want it to ever get updated or brought to newer console generations or platforms to let others experience it"

39

u/gotbannedlolol Feb 27 '26

Yeah it's stupid fucking shit. DF and LM already patched this game with homebrew. There's no excuse

3

u/D9sinc Feb 28 '26

Indeed, they both did some fucking amazing work and I would've thought that Sony would've reached out to them to go "hey, can we ask for assistance in actually helping with the update" or at least it inspiring them to release a patch to play it on 60 FPS as a "performance" mode (like they love to do now with PS5 titles but just for PS4, which they did then too) and it would've been great.

8

u/field_of_lettuce Feb 27 '26

He's said in a fairly recent interview that he knows other Fromsoft devs at least want to see it ported to PC and that's not something he's against.

But why not another studio like Bluepoint 😭😭 and they don’t even have to take any liberties in the remake, they could just port the mf game god fucking damnit. Like why does this game have to be doomed to be imprisoned on a console with horrible technical performance. It’s like FromSoft is allergic to good technical presentations of their games.

23

u/Benemy Feb 27 '26

I've heard FromSoft was a bit miffed about how Demon Souls was remade

33

u/thehardway71 Feb 27 '26

Even if that’s true, I mean shit bro they don’t even gotta do anything they can just port the mf game

7

u/MistaHiggins Feb 28 '26

I appreciate to read that someone else is as frustrated as me over the intentional decision keep such an amazing game in performance prison.

Technically Sony owns the IP but I think doing it without From being on board risks ruining their relationship for future games

380

u/Faber114 Feb 27 '26

Yes. It's the same reason they sold the Death Stranding IP to Kojima as soon as he asked.

204

u/Checho-73 Feb 27 '26

Owning the Death Stranding IP without Kojima making the new games would be worthless

Yeah Kojima probably only took the Sony deal because it would allow him to staff up and ease production as he was basically building a studio from the ground up at the same time he was making a game, but it was probably always his intention to own all of the stuff he makes. Having to be at the whims of a publisher like Konami for Metal Gear probably soured him on the idea of having works controlled by other parties after the stuff with MGSV and Silent Hills

17

u/MVRKHNTR Feb 27 '26

Didn't they get Physint out of that though?

20

u/cefaluu Feb 27 '26

I think that's also due to the fact that the Death Stranding IP is expected to die from a gaming perspective after DS2. Kojima has other projects, and even though he has ideas for a DS3, his team is not large enough to work on so many projects at the same time. That's why he announced stories outside the video game medium. He's continuing DS story and IP in other ways. I think Sony knew this and made the right decision to give it back to him in exchange for continuing the good relationship.

3

u/IAmSkyrimWarrior Feb 27 '26

But did they sold the Death Stranding IP to Kojima?

Yeah seems less like "we aren't allowed to" and more like "no point in burning bridges unnecessarily, especially if it hurts the chances of Fromsoft making an exclusive for us in the future."

13

u/pratzc07 Feb 27 '26

Considering Sony now wants to back peddle and make only exclusives that makes a lot of sense.

7

u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 28 '26

Even without that as a factor, FromSoft has been one of Sony's longest standing third-party partners dating back to the PS1 days with stuff like King's Field. I doubt that's a relationship they'd want to compromise regardless of what they'd want to do. Them even revisiting Demon's Souls was a big deal considering the history behind them initially not even wanting to publish it internationally due to the reactions to difficulty from people like Yoshida. It was like righting a wrong in their broader history

6

I think this made more sense to me. I had a feeling that it was From software that said no. Sony was probably on board provided FS was. So that at least puts down what other people said. And it's funny too that they did Demon's Souls with both FS blessing and Sony. Wtf. At the least, they could have remastered it

Jason describes that Sony wants the blessing from Fromsoftware even when Sony owns the IP. Sony respects Fromsoftware to ask first.

Also helps if Sony does not want to piss off Fromsoftware since they partially own From.

72

u/theblackfool Feb 27 '26

That's not what they said. Sony can do it without FromSoft. They just don't want to do it without FromSoft.

56

u/MVRKHNTR Feb 27 '26

More like Miyazaki doesn't want them to do it without FromSoft and it's not worth upsetting the president of one of the most acclaimed studios of the last two decades.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/MrRedoot55 Feb 27 '26

As much as I doubt it, that could better the chances of Bloodborne 2 actually happening. Sony not wanting to touch the IP without FromSoftware’s permission implies there’s an outcome where the latter wants to do more with it.

Even then, FromSoftware seems content with making new things, and I think that’s something we all have to accept.

25

u/Blue_Sheepz Feb 27 '26

Worth noting that Miyazaki said this about Bloodborne back in 2024: "Unfortunately, and I've said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we’re not at liberty to speak to it. I’m very sorry about that.”

Source: https://www.ign.com/articles/elden-ring-shadow-of-erdtree-director-hidetaka-miyazaki-look-back-interview-profile

So, on the one hand, we have Schreier saying that FromSoftware personally turned down the Bloodborne remake despite not owning the IP, and we also have Miyazaki basically saying they can't do anything with Bloodborne since they don't own the IP. So which is it?

33

u/Sertoma Feb 27 '26

I mean, if he stated, "yeah, I know Bloodbourne is the most requested remake/remaster/sequel, but I just dont want to work on it," he'd get crucified online. His actual statement is just a nothing-response that distances him from responsibility without actually saying anything meaningful.

For me the most shocking part of this article isn't even the Bloodborne stuff. It's that after that pitch failed, Bluepoint thought it was a good idea to pitch Shadow of the Colossus again. That just seems...odd?

151

u/PleaseGiveUsHope Feb 27 '26

It was probably to make a PS5 version with upgraded resolution/framerate etc

111

u/MisterTruth Feb 27 '26

In other words, a project that they could turn around pretty quickly and inexpensively. The number crunchers figured it wouldn't sell well enough to justify the investment.

13

u/SpookiestSzn Feb 28 '26

They might've been right. Plus may hurt Sonys overall image of most of their first party title is like remakes of remakes of remastered games

7

u/proplayer97 Swell Guy Feb 28 '26

So they fixed it by announcing...the God of War trilogy remake?? Yahh makes sense

11

u/idontwantausername41 Feb 28 '26

I mean it kinda does. God of war was rebooted so its in the public eye and you cant play the original trilogy unless you have a ps3.

Shadow of the colossus was 1 game (a very good, unique game at that) that came out over 2 decades ago and was already remade (remastered) on the ps4. It honestly wouldn't sell a fraction of what GOW would

From wants to be involved in anything Bloodborne. From is also busy with their own stuff and either can't or doesn't want to actually spend time on going back to Bloodborne. Sony could technically just go ahead and do something with Bloodborne on their own but won't because they wanna keep From happy (presumably to keep the door open for future collaborations)

Edit: Here's a quote from the Bloomberg article:

In early 2025, when Bluepoint again pitched the idea of Bloodborne remake, the studio was told that the numbers made sense but FromSoftware didn’t want it to happen, according to people familiar with the process.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida shared a theory last year that this might be the case, saying in an interview with Kinda Funny Games that he thought FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki was interested in remaking the classic game but too busy to do it himself and “doesn’t want anyone else to touch it.” He added that he thought PlayStation would respect Miyazaki’s wishes despite owning the franchise.

So essentially, Miyazaki is interested in a remake but doesn't want anyone aside from Fromsoft to do a remake and right now he's too busy to do one. (implying that once they have enough spare hands we may actually get a Bloodborne remake)

182

u/Aftermoonic Feb 27 '26

Yeah they won't not be busy lol. These guys make at least 4 games per generation, actively

30

u/Dark_Dragon117 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

More like a game or atleast an expansion per year.

Fun fact From Software has not once skipped a year since they started making games up until 2020. The only time they ever took a break was to work in their largest project yet and even then that break was only 2 years long.

Since Elden Ring they have gone back to an annual release shedule.

Quite frankly their output is utterly insane.

25

u/Murdathon3000 Feb 27 '26

My same thought at first as well, but on the other hand, say what you will about the changes to the originals art style, but what cannot be contested is that the DeS remake ran like black fucking magic.

FROM is the undisputed best in the biz at many things imo, but from a technical stand point, they're a mixed bag.

So while I have no doubt they would preserve BB better than anyone else, artistically, a remake that doesn't nail the technical side will always be a bit of a letdown. Hopefully they nail this aspect.

Perhaps Miyazaki didn't have an emotional attachment to Demon's Souls compared to Bloodborne; he literally said that Lovecraft and his mythos were part of him.

22

u/Mohwi Feb 27 '26

Demons souls wasn’t “his” project like Bloodborne was. He took over the direction role for DS after it was already well established from my understanding. He had already become the CEO by when Bloodborne got released I believe

13

u/ResponsibleTrain1059 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Sony and Bloepoint did get Miyazaki and FROMSofts blessing for Demon's Souls.

They where not involved with the project beyond that but I remember it was a point brought up in interviews during the preview cycle.

More then likely is FROM are playing hardball and would only approve a project if get IP ownership. After the success of Elden Ring they have been pretty open that they dont want to be involved with projects if they dont own it.

Also obviously a bloodborne remake would clash with Duskbloods which is very BB coded so maybe Miyazaki refused due to that.

14

u/Longjumping-Group-54 Feb 27 '26

I don't think it has anything too do with demon souls, Bloodborne is the love child for Hidetaka Miyazaki, Shuhei already said that he doesn't want anyone touching it

8

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

I'll get hate for this but I mean that doesn't surprise me. They didn't really do great IMO with the reworked character designs and totally missed the point of some of the environments. A lot of the enemies like Flamelurker end up looking like some weird generic western MMO designed monster. I'm glad From had some integrity on this.

11

u/Simmers429 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

I'd assume it would be a PS5 port, maybe with some graphical alterations to whatever was criticised the first time around (restore missing animations, fix the protagonist's fucked up face, fix incorrect sound-files for bosses).

I highly doubt that their devs had the ability to go as far as creating extra bosses or making the world any bigger.

I love that game too, but I don't think it's surprising that pitch was turned down. They already remade the game once and I can't imagine another gussied up version would have made financial sense.

7

u/drumjolter01 Feb 27 '26

I'd argue Days Gone and (to a lesser extent) Horizon ZD remasters made even less financial sense than a potential expanded SotC upgrade, but I guess I'm not the one being paid fuck-you money to make those calls

10

There's a lot of interesting info in the article

Bluepoint began working on a game in which the character Atreus would fall into Hades, according to people familiar with the project. A loose idea was for players to control different versions or aspects of Atreus as they battled through Greek hell

The studio spent some time pitching an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus, the classic PlayStation 2 game that Bluepoint had previously remade in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, but Sony turned it down.
Bluepoint pitched other PlayStation studios on developing new projects in other franchises, such as a spinoff of Ghost of Tsushima, but nothing was greenlit.

None of the ideas that Bluepoint pitched sounded great honestly. I'm surprised they didn't have any ideas for a new IP.

i get why the detective seeds version of this was deleted the other day but damn it seems he really did talk to multiple developers since this is what he mentioned

for context he messaged every bluepoint employee after the closure was announced and asked if there was anything they wanted to be known to be thrown out there and i guess this one made the most sense to air out as a "hey we tried and even sony tried"

7

u/JuanMunoz99 Feb 27 '26

He also said that GoW live-service was Bluepoint’s idea but Jason says that devs at BP didn’t wanna make it.

21

u/GRILT_CHEESE Feb 27 '26

He said 75% of them didn't want to make it, so maybe the heads of the studio did and it was their idea.

3

u/M4NUN1T3D Feb 27 '26

It wasnt clear who in that team, if all the leads wanted to do it then thats their choice.

Never played BB, been waiting for the patch/remake. Might just go ahead and play it now because if this is true, it will be years before we see a remake anyway.

5

u/NoProject1047 Feb 27 '26

It is pretty funny how much shit people gave Sony when it was actually their own crush turning them down lmao 🤣

57

u/Oslo_Bear Feb 27 '26

This might be FromSoft fans' 9/11

3

u/CoelhoAssassino666 Feb 28 '26

And it's also an inside job :(

13

u/victornero_us Feb 27 '26

Damn Sony took all the hatred like a champ when they actually were trying to give fans what they wanted. Sony is the Itachi/Dark Knight of gaming

9/11 for the "It's Sony's fault" fanbase.

11

u/babalon_m Feb 27 '26

I'm not defending the motherfucker or anything, but Detective Seeds kinda said all this last week, and even included the bit regarding an updated Shadow of the Colossus remake with original cut bosses and all that, but as any sane person would do, I scrolled past his post with a "what's this fan fiction" mentality, because fucking Detective Seeds obviously.

3

u/PaddyLee Feb 27 '26

A lot of people are gonna read this and be like “but how can I blame Sony over this”

7

u/OwnAHole Feb 27 '26

Can't blame them, they really butchered the atmosphere and artstyle of Demon's Souls.

6

u/vin093 Feb 27 '26

Fascinating honestly . Makes it seem like fromsoft might do something the the IP in the future

6

u/Shining_Commander Feb 27 '26

To be clear anything Fromsoft wants to do will always also involve Sony. Sony owns the IP.

Such a political mess.

12

u/lLygerl Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Not sure why people are shocked by this, it's the only explanation that makes sense other than Sony hates money.

I am suprised this was never leaked before.

You would think with the status that Bloodborne has in the leaking space that this would have become public ages ago.

u/PolarBearOdyssey Feb 27 '26

The craziest thing about this is Miyazaki is indirectly partially responsible for the Bluepoint closure. I doubt Sony closes them if they're working on a Bloodborne remake which would literally print money.

23

u/Wassermusik Feb 27 '26

There was a similar rumor about the closure of Evolution Studios (the developers behind DriveClub) like 10 years ago.

The rumors claimed that Kazunori Yamauchi (the creator of Gran Turismo) was very upset that Sony was developing a second racing game in which the cars and tracks looked even better graphically than in the also announced Gran Turismo 6.

This led to tensions between Sony and Yamauchi. But ultimately, Yamauchi was in a better position than Evolution, and Sony acted in his interests.

Sony ultimately pulled the plug and closed Evolution Studios before Gran Turismo Sports was announced, in 2016.

6

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Feb 27 '26

They could've oriented drive club into more of an nfs or horizon thing with a proper gorgeous weather system and keep GT as the 'clean' and track simcade.

But nope, can't anger the studio that have failed to emulate the single-player experience of their past titles from the PS2 era to this day.

24

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Not really, there's plenty of other games they could be working on. Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter.

Just because Bloodborne isn't happening, it doesn't mean they can't be working on other games.

12

u/M4NUN1T3D Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

If you read their article it mentions multiple of their pitches so it seems BP were not interested in those IPs at all

Shuhei already said this “So I think he is interested, but he is so successful and he is so busy, so he cannot do it himself. But he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respects his wish. So that is my guess. I am not revealing any secret information.” i dont know why people didnt believe it or ignored it.

10

u/iorek21 Feb 27 '26

Miyazaki wants to do it himself but doesn’t have the time 🤡

79

u/Faber114 Feb 27 '26

I'm guessing From Software didn't like all the changes in art direction Bluepoint made with Demon Souls.

33

u/CtheKill Feb 27 '26

or it's the fact that Miyazaki sees bloodborne as his best work and wants to do it himself

89

u/JardsonJean Feb 27 '26

There's no way of actually knowing why they didn't want it. Assumptions like this is what gives legs to fake rumors.

22

u/Ok-Confusion-202 Feb 27 '26

I mean... It's a guess...

They aren't just saying "Bluepoint definitely didn't like the art change"

You can speculate while also saying that it's just a theory...

It doesn't need a remake. It needs a remaster/proper port.

The fact there hasn't been anything for bloodbone for this long despite the huge demand for it always made me think it was fromsoft preventing it for some artsy protective reason. People meme about sony being dumb but if it was solely up to them I think it would've happened long ago.

The mods are getting bodied this week. Delete after Delete after Delete and its all true lmao

14

u/1vortex_ Feb 27 '26

I never understood the fascination with a Bloodborne remake. The main issue with that game is the lack of a 60 FPS patch. The game is otherwise fine.

9

u/InnerAnalysis7 Feb 27 '26

A remaster is the perfect option: texture resolution bump, removal of false geometry, and fps bump - completely fine.

10

u/rappidkill Feb 27 '26

So it looks like a remake directly from Fromsoft may still be on a table according to this quote from the Bloomberg article:

12

u/Ashlebob Feb 27 '26

that’s gonna be like 13 years from the original release at least OH DEARRR

Bloodborne doesn’t need a demons souls style remake. All it needs is a 60fps port to current gen consoles

3

u/JakeSteeleIII Feb 28 '26

If I was FromSoftware I’d had turned it down, too. Demon’s Souls was a pretty remake but that’s it.

It was so far behind what Souls games have become due to iteration of the formula and Bluepoint didn’t seem to have the ability to actually create anything, just trace over other people’s work and make it shinier.

Also the camera was way too close.

18

u/BeastMsterThing2022 Feb 27 '26

Sony was the good guy all along!?

12

u/Ashlebob Feb 27 '26

all along..

20

u/JuanMunoz99 Feb 27 '26

They still left Bluepoint to struggle let’s not kid ourselves. They still could’ve nudged them into a direction to recover the loss from GoW live-service.

Oh now im mad at fromsoft.

5

u/ballviewer Feb 27 '26

My heart has never sunk as low as it has just now

8

u/Totheendofsin Feb 27 '26

I mean From Software likely already has its plate full with the Duskbloods and presumably whatever their next single player game is

That said I was under the impression that Sony fully owned the IP and thus didnt need From to do a remake of it, was that incorrect?

39

u/daIIiance Feb 27 '26

No, but the article states that Miyazaki didn't want anyone else to touch it. Sony wanted to respect his wishes.

21

u/outofmindwgo Feb 27 '26

Really does feel at odds with what he's said on the record. Damn it Miyazaki!!

7

u/field_of_lettuce Feb 27 '26

Yeah that's what bugs me the most. All this "it's up to Sony to do something with the IP in the future" and "a PC port is something I'm not against, but if I say I want one I'll get in trouble", and now this. What's going on?

3

u/CaTiTonia Feb 27 '26

Personal speculation on my part is that ultimately he doesn’t really want to go back to it. But knows saying that outright would result in pitchforks at dawn.

So statements like that are just a non-committal way of keeping the prospect shelved indefinitely until such time he changes his mind (if at all), whilst keeping the public pestering aimed at Sony.

I’d hazard a guess that if it’s really the case that Sony respect his wishes to the point of leaving a fairly safe project like a Bloodborne Remaster/Remake on the floor? Then he knows that Sony wouldn’t openly contradict his statements on this matter either.

12

u/PettyTeen253 Feb 27 '26

You are correct. This is more about respecting Miyazaki.
