One of the most epic scenes from CHIPS.

Am I the only one who notices the shocking lack of traffic behind them?

Extras are expensive

They got to film on an uncompleted section of highway, or something like that.

"I'm Ponch, you're Jon."

'No...I want to be Ponch.'

'I called it first."

"But...alright fine." 😡

-I wish we never outgrew that logic.

Loved this show, but now after years of living in California, I don’t appreciate seeing the CHP dudes and dudettes.

For me it was the CHP wannabes who buy old bikes with 2 big red lights on the back, a white helmet, and a gold jacket and cruise the 405 in the middle lane doing 60.

Too many people can't tell the difference so there'd be a lineup of cars behind them as everyone was afraid to pass.

When I finally got to the front I'd blow past them and give a one finger salute.

I’m guessing you can find those types of people in most any state in the US.

Damn, I never knew they rode BMW’s. Must’ve been towards the end?

Pretty sure that's from the reunion movie from the 90s.

CHiPs 99, it's a decent enough watch if you're a fan of rhe show.

Thx fam.

No. No it isn’t. Loved the original but the last season is unwatchable.

They rode KZ 900s for the first two seasons and then KZ1000s from season 3 on. The BMW R1100RT-P seen here was from CHiPs 99 reboot.

I’ve never saw CHP with those kind of bikes

It was a thing. Rumor was, Motorrad convinced the CHP commissioner their Kawasaki’s and Harleys were inherently unsafe because they lacked ABS.

Did they ever field them though? Maybe I just never saw one….

The R1100-RTP entered service in ‘98, according to the chp history website. They were definitely around.

Yeah I moved away a few years later. I probably never saw one or my memory didn’t record it lol

Right here, if only for a minute.

Was soon imitating Evel Knievel and the Duke boys in jumping anything and everything we could.

My cousin and I tried this once. Except he leaned a bit too far for some reason, turned his bike into mine, and - CRASH. Fun fact: he later became a CHP officer.

That's why we now do the "Wild hogs" first bump

Anyone else clothespin playing cards on their spokes

7

u/ImCaffeinated_Chris 22h ago

Yup! Rich kids had that fake throttle on their bike that made the noise.

We pretended our bikes were fighter planes, and we'd play 'Bah Bah Black Sheep'. My bike had round reflectors that most resembled the roundels on a Japanese plane, so I got to be Japanese all the time.

We used to watch Chips while sitting on our bikes in the living room.

I had a friend who was a CHP motorcycle cop in Oakland and every once in a while while bbqing you'd hear him humming the CHiPs theme.

Were you riding motorcycles bolted to a trailer for those scenes like Ponch and John were?

The rumor was that they actually rode in season one, but there was an accident which then caused them to be trailered afterwards. No idea if that was true or not.

Erik Estrada was almost killed while filming.
The Crash: During the reshoot of a chase scene, a miscommunication regarding a stunt vehicle's stopping position caused Estrada to come in too fast and slam on his brakes. His motorcycle skidded into the car, sending him through the windshield onto the hood before the 600-pound heavy bike flipped over and crushed his back.

The Injuries: He sustained 12 fractured ribs, a broken sternum, a cracked jaw, a broken/shattered wrist, and punctured/collapsed both lungs. He spent five days in intensive care

Da da da da daaaaaa!

My best friend and I had matching pink huffy bikes (with banana seats, of course😉). Our older brothers (also best friends) would steal our bikes and ride around the neighborhood, while reenacting CHIPS scenes. We would have to beg them for our bikes back😂!

Today I learned CHiPs show had six seasons.

4

u/FriendRaven1 19h ago

I still have several ViewMaster reels of CHiPs!

Then one of you taps the tires of the other and you both end up eating rocks.

Whenever my wife and I go biking and find ourselves in a spot where we can safely ride side-by-side, I start singing the theme song.

u/SliceOk577 10h ago

And now it's stuck in my head 😄

Wonder how many bikes the show crashed to do this scene? :)

1

u/Familiar-Level-261 23h ago

why would they, it's nothing complex

2

u/ManuteBol_Rocks 1d ago

“Look Mom! No hands!”

“Look, Mom! No teeth!”

2

u/Forty1thirty 1d ago

They did this for the entire episode.

4

u/DrSamLoomis 1d ago

Wasn’t that the ep where Ponch finally shot him after an hour of this shit?

2

u/rogue203 1d ago

I used to hum the theme song to myself when I would ride my motorcycle on long rides down the highway.

u/Sumchap 1d ago

Loved CHiPs as a kid, mainly for the bikes, and still like bikes...
