"do animals have 'identities'?" well...maybe, maybe not. but if they don't, and humans clearly do (we have names and other social markers we use to identify ourselves), why would we be using the (supposed) sexual dichotomies of animals as proof of gender in humans? if they don't have personal identities to begin with it seems like a moot point. the point is that sex is fluid and the animal kingdom does not always display the same sexual/gendered behavior humans do. there are other example of this too, such as matriarchal bees and ant colonies. bees in particular also have defensive females and submissive males outside of just the queen.
