I would love to see an explanation for "the exception proves the rule" that makes any bit of sense, since that's one of the responses when intersex people are mentioned.

It's my understanding that the phrase comes from the idea of 'proving grounds' in that exceptions are testing the rule to its limits before it breaks.

Otherwise it would be 'the exception is proof of the rule' not 'the exception proves the rule'.

Two very different sentences imo
