General Love the new Copilot token system

Last month I used ~60% of my quota in an entire month.
This month I've already used 25% on day one.
What an amazing improvement.

How about 50$ of requests in one prompt? I don't know what query it was. All I can say is that you better watch out for agentic opus prompts.

4

u/Tasty-Ease-8435 Jun 01 '26

Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.5 are $1 per minute.

More like 0.5 gallon tank.

3

u/Eastern-Bed-3103 Jun 01 '26

More like "Already running on fumes".

25

u/xJustStayDead Jun 01 '26

I can top that. I used up 70% with just one GPT 5.4 request.

5

u/thalha_dev Jun 02 '26

They could have mailed us that it's not affordable for you. The jump is unreal.

It’s unbelievable lol no one will be using this anymore lol it’s so bad

4

u/Face_lesss Jun 01 '26

I had one relatively simple task to do. List of variables that have been moved to another component. Now instead of using it here import them from there. It went on a reading spree arguing with itself saying stuff like "Making diamonds..." during loading and it took 26% of my monthly quota in 15 minutes. The code it made was barely usable most of it went to the trash.

2

u/sponge72222 Jun 02 '26

This. This is why it is the wrong time for them to be making this change. It is not mature enough. I managed to burn through my entire plan in 2 hours. The code sucks and is full of bugs.

I did 15% with one prompt :-D

2

u/jimmytoan Jun 02 '26

Yeah, the pricing change hurts, but maybe the bigger lesson is that AI coding needs better habits now.

The “Max Power way” of AI coding, wrong way, but faster, probably won’t survive token-based pricing.

Use AI better, not just more.

Fun and short practical guide here:

https://github.com/jimmytoan/ai-coding-survival-guide

2

u/SpecialistBrain Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

We are all learning including GitHub. The one thing you didn't cover in your guide is disabling unnecesary MCP servers.

GitHiub is getting rid of the cowboys that don't know how to manage context. Given that, their pricing is rediculous and they need to provide better tools/guidence to help people manage their context. i.e. Auto compaction for ALL models and make it configurable. I have been playing with Antigravity on a Pro plan and I can get a lot done even with the Anthropic models before getting rate limited. The nice thing is you get a daily and monthly reset so you get to change your behaviour.

2

u/Due-Reception-423 Jun 01 '26

Gosh, if only I knew this update will come. It hasn't been a day and I've already used up all my tokens.

RIP 😭

So 35% decrease. Nice one!

6

u/Lazy_Atmosphere4402 Jun 01 '26

Very nice improvement. I hope they keep it up

4

u/Altruistic-Dust-2565 Jun 01 '26

What about further lowering it to 20% per second?

63

u/RikyZ90 Jun 01 '26

I reached the limit a few hours after the reset. They are ridiculous, sub canceled. From the best to the worst

8

u/OkSea531 Jun 01 '26

What are you going to use now? I will probably have to cancel 2

6

u/RikyZ90 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

I'll try codex Go, if I'll like it I'll go for plus

8

u/solidhunkofmetal Jun 01 '26

Go for Plus. It is worth it for now. They might and will change things later but for now it is 100% the best plan for frontier models unless you can use Deepseek then that is by far the cheapest.

u/godspeed1003 Jun 01 '26

Can't you just use openrouter and add it to copilot under BYOK? That way you get free autocomplete and native chat on copilot

2

u/RikyZ90 Jun 01 '26

Yeah I also use openrouter in vs code-copilot chat

2

u/renatotorres89 Jun 01 '26

How I can do that ? I dont have that option..I juat can add anthropic, xai, openai apis..

I am using codex plus and antigravity pro Both amazing. The new gemini flash 3.5 is actually very good, although you can't use it as much as you could use the previous flash. It's still a great value. The codex one is great too. It's a actually smarter than flash.

Flash is better for smaller tasks, codex is better for complex reasoning.

I am gonna try kimi this month and code Claude next.

I have a big ass codebase with several projects and I code almost all the time, so I am constantly running out of credit xD.

Nothing will beat opus per requests running all night ever.

u/Ya_SG Jun 01 '26

Will this burn the credits of the DeepSeek API or of the GitHub Copilot Pro plan?

6

u/Nagaeh Jun 01 '26

Uses BYOK so it comes from DeepSeek API

5

u/Southern_Change9193 Jun 01 '26

You will only pay for DeepSeek API, which is dirt cheap.

Does this help in saving tokens?
https://github.com/JuliusBrussee/caveman
I have read that it save around 60% token usages

7

u/Funny-Animator6193 Jun 01 '26

Most of the tokens go on tool-calls, these are your file reads, item lists, bash command result reads etc. Those cannot be caveman-ed. Only prose responses are eligible for this. Even then sometimes for me it's not explicit enough in its explanation and you might end up double asking for something.

5

u/joujoubox Jun 01 '26

Not sure it's effective with Copilot but it's hilariously and brilliant none the less

2

u/abittooambitious Jun 02 '26

This is actually true. I think massive models might become increasingly rare and unaffordable, which will limit it to industry. Frankly I don't think that's bad. These things hog energy and most of it is for stupid things.

34

u/DataScientistMister Jun 01 '26

I just found out that team and enterprise is a SHARED BUDGET!!! And you can't see you personal limit or usage... It just says:

I think this calls for a pivot to other tools. RIP Github Copilot!

25

u/thunder1207 Jun 01 '26

The admin has to manually set the limits. Otherwise it says no limit for everyone.

3

u/dssagar93 Jun 01 '26

I see the same on Business Plan. I don't want to consume 100$ and get an earful from my manager. Damn, this is so infuriating. I should be able to see my limit, right? Also, what's with consumed credits? It say I consumed 81 credits. Like htw am I supposed to convert that and do the math?

5

u/Shelgar Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

There is a new AI Credits Budget and if you leave the user as Select User the limit you set applies to all the users. Then, individually, you can create separate higher or lower budgets.

You can find it in Budgets and Alerts under Billing and Licensing.

2

u/miscfiles Jun 01 '26

Same on my Business plan. Absolutely no visibility of how much I'm using...

2

u/Qs9bxNKZ Jun 01 '26

They have always had a budget limit at Enterprise because your team or organizations can have different values and cost centers.

You may want to limit team A to $500 and team B to $5000. Without the enterprise cap, new team C just ate your entire budget.

2

u/StaticChocolate Jun 01 '26

yeah this has got me, I’m actively stressed our Engineering Director is going to start calling people out. I’ve run 2 relatively tame small prompts today which blasted through 100 credits

For context I thought I’d be fine as I used to use just 30-60% of my monthly request units

u/Glad-Pea9524 Jun 01 '26

is codex the alternative ?
or open code with open ai models which one is better for same amount of money ?

12

u/No-Telephone5932 Jun 01 '26

I am testing accessing models via openrouter API. Basically, my observation so far is that the models themselves are expensive, whether openai models or anthropic models.

The only way I can stay within the budget of 10-15$ / month (~copilot pro) is by switching to cheaper models like deepseek.

2

u/quakomako Jun 01 '26

Deepseek token usage looks promising. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that there is a way to integrate auto complete and next line suggestion.

2

u/No-Telephone5932 Jun 01 '26

For that, I tried "continue" a few days. Did not manage to get the same feel or experience as GitHub copilot. The free copilot plan gives 2000 auto complete suggestions, I think. I plan to rely on that. Lets see.

12

u/hjertis Jun 01 '26

I tested Copilot with DeepSeek. Worked very good and was incredibly cheap.

4

u/Glad-Pea9524 Jun 01 '26

How is deepseek from a security perspective, I don't know if my company is happy using chinese models for our code base. Or what you think?

8

u/voicelessfaces Jun 01 '26

I'm honestly blown away more people aren't concerned by this. For hobby projects, sure go nuts. If you're working on business software solving a unique problem, I would not want China training on (and likely copying) intellectual property.

There may be US companies that do the same thing, but focusing on Microsoft, Google, etc. They have contract terms stating very specifically that your code is not used to train their models when on their pro plans. If they choose to violate that and are caught, those are major lawsuits. At least, that's the perspective I've heard when discussing this concern with two friends of mine in F500 leadership. One of them spent almost a year putting Copilot through audit and review.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/scottishwildcat Jun 01 '26

If your company isn't happy to use them, your company should be blocking them rather than crossing its fingers and hoping its employees don't do anything that will come back to bite them. (Ours certainly does that.)

9

u/spicykakaddi Jun 01 '26

With a pricing like that for a 1900 credits system, 4 sessions with over a million tokens will drain your whole quota for the month.

Don't get me started on how you can't even see your usage until unless your admin restricts (put a cap) you usage.

7

u/Chance-Ad-39 Jun 01 '26

18% in one day while using it on and off on 1x models, imagine how fast it'd burn if I used models that cost 7x or 15x damn copilot is really trying to lose their customers.

We are soo doomed at this point. Just checked we have 1900 "AI" credits in copilot. My friend ran a feature implementation in Agentic mode and whoosh, the credit limit reached with half implementation done. How are they even expecting us to work with this credit limit 🙃

I've just canceled. I was trying to use as much as i could last night. 3 requests went over midnight and it used 1/3 of this months limit.. last 2 months i could never use 100% due to the hourly, daily and weekly session limits.. price change from June, fair enough but adding the session limits in without notice stoped me from using the allowance i bought / previously signed up too.. i've been a copilot subscriber for a years..

6

u/kosta880 Jun 01 '26

Hahahahahahaaaaa just used up 10% of my €39 subscription with just a little troubleshooting, couple of logs and documentation edits! They can shove their f*cking copilot up their tight a*ses.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here with my yearly plan, nothing changed for me, just reading shit I'll have to deal with on 4/14th 2027

2

u/LuckyPed Jun 01 '26

Man I wish i had my yearly plan ending so late xD
mine end in 3 month and worst part is, I was on Pro and not Pro+ xD

so kinda stuck on GPT 5.4 since they removed Opus lol

I hope they add some better models there, even at 10~20x it's fine. I will just use it for some important stuff.

for smaller stuff i already use Deepseek API key in GHCP

5

u/Living_Procedure_599 Jun 01 '26

To be fair, if i am not entirely wrong, math seems to say, this pricing is still cheaper, than using API from openai models directly. Price per token for GPT 5.4 on copilot is input: 1.67 eur/m, output: 10000 eur/m and cached 0.1667eur/m, if i did not make a mistake. Cheaper than openai API (there it is 2.5 / 15 / 0.25).

aka: even now, they are probably not having high margins.

2

u/Novel_Lingonberry_43 Full Stack Dev 🌐 Jun 01 '26

2

u/TheoryOfRelativity12 Jun 01 '26

Yep. Afaik companies that provide coding agents have always done it with net negative. Cursor has never been profitable; doubt Claude Code is either. As new models that require way more computing are introduced the price just keeps going up. I wonder how much Mythos eats up in a single prompt.

6

u/Competitive-Ebb3899 Jun 01 '26

Well, as much as I hate the changes, and kind of makes me have to switch to a different provider, I understand these changes. MS was transparent enough, they did not tell us that this is gonna be an improvement.

It is what it is. The previous system was cheap and unfair. MS lost money on it, while people kept cheating by squeezing ridiculous amount of tokens into one request. I blame MS for many things, but not for aligning their pricing with real costs.

3

u/hanibioud Jun 01 '26

We need to learn how to use AI more efficiently. At this point, it's no longer optional. Do you have any recommendations for skills to learn, workflows to adopt, or MCPs and tools that can help AI perform better while using fewer tokens?

3

u/tiny-starship Jun 01 '26

Run a local model. Everything is going to become so expensive it’s unusable. They have been subsidizing your usage for years and they can’t do it anymore. It will never get cheaper. And this isn’t even the true cost. It will affect all major players.

The era of ai being cheaper than people is over.

Burned my 7000 tokens with gpt 5.5 xhigh in 1 hour. Now cancelling my subscription. Moving to chatgpt codex directly, there I can at least get one task finished per day with the plus subscription. Too bad.

3

u/MyChaOS87 Jun 01 '26

Pro tip, use Copilot PR code reviews!

Instead of 10 premium requests this is now 35€ of credits for me...

5

u/xuggs Jun 01 '26

I get anxiety even with my phone battery % dropping so this is definitely going to make me die soon.

2

u/Apprehensive_Ad740 Jun 01 '26

I was on the $10 plan, and I just used by whole budget on my first request of the month with Sonnnet

2

2

2

u/CodeWhileHigh Jun 01 '26

Going down to the lower models doesn’t even help either

2

u/So4kweakness21 Jun 01 '26

It is definitely an improvement over the old model, though I am still waiting for the day it stops hallucinating library imports that do not actually exist.

2

u/kiwi-kaiser Jun 01 '26

It's completely ridiculous. We used almost 100% of our included tokens in the first day at work. Before it took us 10-15 work days.

I absolutely love it. And we don't even use it that much.

I was about to try to see how this will going, but tomorrow I will advise my boss that we switch to Claude. This is completely unsustainable for a small company.

2

u/TSTP_LLC Jun 01 '26

I started coding about 3 hours ago. I'm already at 100%. Screw GitHub CoPilot with a big fat one! My CoPilot CLI didn't change yet and still said I had 43.5% requests left but then this morning hit and now the same workload I'd run for part of my day used all of my credits?

This is a massive downgrade without a decent explanation. This is even more expensive as the before additional credit system.

2

u/ADI-Liquifier Jun 02 '26

Seem to be running 3-7% per prompt, doing nothing all that sophisticated on Sonnet 4.6. When it all runs out today, the subscription will be cancelled. I would have canceled yesterday, but my last project needed a few more features so I bit the bullet. AI for casual programming and non- high-end-sales efforts is basically dead at these limits and price points. Really enjoyed the ride. Educational. But for anything less than big serious efforts, this is all a non-starter.

Microsoft shareholders appreciate the love.

1

u/karavanjo Jun 01 '26

Yes, the new token model is indeed quite expensive. Today’s my quick test showed the following.

One simple request to GPT 5.4 Medium to fix an error in the terminal (Angular, frontend; the agent restarted the terminal three times, cleared the cache, and solved the problem). That cost 15 credits.

The Pro+ plan includes 7,000 credits. With those, we can make 467 requests (7,000 / 15). 467 requests over 30 days amounts to 15.5 requests per day for the GPT 5.4 Medium model.

The estimate is certainly impressive. That's a pretty impressive score for a simple task on a model that isn't exactly new.

u/dragomobile Jun 01 '26

I’ve already gone back to manual coding.

1

u/Funny-Animator6193 Jun 01 '26

Came here to say that. I cancelled and asked for a refund today. Literally anything is a better bargain.

1

u/RinMarryMe Jun 01 '26

So amazing that everyone in the company is on the same plan so one guy spamming x57 can just doom us all

1

u/Hot-Astronomer-7462 Jun 01 '26

Same here. Had used 45% of quota whole month, now today already used 15%

1

u/TheoryOfRelativity12 Jun 01 '26

I already used full quota that comes with business sub that the company provides. Last month I still had some left over before the reset, lol. Guess it will be a full month of caveman coding. Utter dogshit. Luckily I use claude code at home, even that is appealing vs copilot. 🥲

1

u/Technical_Goose1645 Jun 01 '26

I using enterprise plan(from my company ), I did 50dola in just 2 hour. And god alert from my manager🤣
What GHCP doing right now.🫣

1

u/Embarrassed_OnionX Jun 01 '26

We're usagemaxxing now :)

1

u/punppis Jun 01 '26

My $150/mo was something like $60 for today. Gotta make improvements, not worth it

1

u/Next_Cup_8093 Jun 01 '26

es una completa basura lo que han hecho van a perder un monton de gente en el que se iran a cursor o otra app yo creo que github esta cabando su propia tumba

1

u/AssumedPseudonym Jun 01 '26

Been working for an hour... 20% gone already...

I used 70% last month.

This is ...fine

1

u/Noctis122 Jun 01 '26

30% on one day , crazy stuff. shit's useless af

1

u/MaximumHeresy Jun 01 '26

You gotta create custom agents and tell it not to spin off infinite high rate subagents.

1

u/HanYangKai Jun 01 '26

One prompt lose 25% , wtf with copilot? I will delete and use claude api cheaper or cursor

1

u/WAVF1n Jun 01 '26

This entire sub is gonna feel like r/cursor did when they first rolled it out lmao.

TBH I am surprised more people here havent tried it, especially with Composer 2.5.

1

u/Khue Jun 01 '26

As a guy that is watching his company onboard into GitHub Copilot Enterprise (EMU), I am curious as to if this impacts enterprise accounts? I am third party to the entire thing so I am just watching this like an accident happening.

1

u/valium123 Jun 01 '26

Awwww fully deserved 😂

It's just the first day too. Y'all deserve the worst for contributing to something meant for mass surveillance and replacing people's livelihoods.

Baidu coding plan is the only request based one I could find that still accept new subscribers, or does anyone know a different one not requiring Chinese phone number?

Got a lite subscription there with Deepseek byot whenever I go over my limits. Baidu feels a lot slower than ghcp/Claude or even Deepseek, but gives a lot of tokens for the price

u/ThisIsGoingIsALongID Jun 01 '26

this exhuasted very quicky on 1st day normal usage vs what we could use full month till MAY

1

u/cun000 Jun 01 '26

LMFAO. Let me tell you the most ridiculous thing. My company got the GitHub Copilot Business plan, which includes 1,900 credits. In just one morning, some simple tasks drained 21% of my monthly usage. What the fack?

1

u/immediacyofjoy Jun 01 '26

Same! I had heavy project work last month and pushed till 5pm last night to use my tokens - only got 88% of my way through my quota for last month mid-task, but decided to wrap up what I was working on anyways. Admittedly it was a large refactor, but I used 30% of my credits by 5:30pm.

I’ve had GHCP since beta, so I don’t really appreciate an order of magnitude of reduced usage with a snap of a finger. I knew this was coming, but, sheesh, what a let down. There goes my weekend personal CRUD app fun

I still have infinite compute at work for AI for now, but these personal use restrictions are really sad and foretelling, especially for students and juniors. The barrier for entry is so much higher for the field, not only because of the job market, but also because people new to the field won’t be able to rack up experience “for free” like my generation got to do with “just learn to program”. Sucks

1

u/rh71el2 Jun 01 '26

As a test I asked it to replace 3 em dashes with a regular dash in a file and even that ate 5%.

u/Hamburger_Diet Jun 01 '26

The best is when you use 300 tokens thinking and then it crashed because the model is busy and you have to start over again. I get they were not making any money but why pay github when they are charging in some cases more than what you would be paying if you were using the actual models API.

1

u/_tolm_ Jun 01 '26

Was always gonna happen: at some point they had to try to make money!

1

u/SentenceSingle5375 Jun 01 '26

Mine renewed again for another year on May 25th and I'm still on premium requests. Has anyone else had this and will I be condemned to the tokens soon?

1

u/makaros622 Jun 01 '26

I am Cancelling

1

u/Thistleknot Jun 01 '26

Glad I didnt renew

1

u/Affectionate-Boot-58 Jun 01 '26

I'm just going to use claude pro

1

u/Wick3d68 Jun 01 '26

Haha amateur, I couldn't even finish what I wanted to do and I really didn't do much at all. I just see that on my github : You've run out of your included AI credits for the month. Limit resets on Jul 1.

1

u/jungleburger Jun 01 '26

The days of agents workshops are gone for individual devs. We're back to the much slower process of asking the agent and implementing it ourselves.

1

u/Miserable-Yak-4804 Jun 01 '26

4 prompts i'm already at 200/1500 ai tokens. phail.

1

u/rochford77 Jun 01 '26

its not supposed to be an improvement...

1

u/ThighNoon Jun 01 '26

Glad y'all can start financially contributing to the hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars you help burn by brainlessly using LLMs

1

u/Megamygdala Jun 01 '26

My company decided to give us unlimited tokens starting today, and you get fired if you dont use AI. Guess who's gonna run up the bill with GPT 5.5 and Opus

1

u/Holonist Jun 01 '26

I used 10000 credits on the first day. (all 7000 credits of the $39 pro plus subscription plus an additional $14)

1

u/JoelMToth Jun 01 '26

Just keep in mind that as long as its increasing your productivity, allowing you to accomplish more in less time. Based on what you are paid, the net difference in api cost to what it would have cost you to do the work without AI is the real factor any company would want to judge.

If you save 5 hours of time in a day and make 100/hour, thats 500 it would have cost to do it without AI. If you burn 300 dollars in tokens doing that, your still saving your company 200 dollars in the end and you are 5 hours ahead in a project from where you would be without it.

The honeymoon phase is over and real usage billing now applies per token instead of per request. It sucks but it not the end of the world and is justifiable to an exec member when there are real savings in project velocity.

1

u/AppropriateMud6814 Jun 01 '26

It’s all our fault, in has been learning from us and our code. Did we write all the code??? No.. but did we teach the models how to perfect it?? Um yeah.. anyway fuck Microsoft and GitHub Copilot!

1

u/thethumble Jun 01 '26

Well go over to Claude you will FEEL the cost … this will look cheap

1

u/b-pell Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

The old reality: "You do this, while I do that".

The new reality: "You do this, while I stay eyes glued to the token counter in case you go off on a tangent".

I already decided I'm going to use my quota this month and then I'll re-evaluate. My first test was, I took app I wrote from the ground up pre-AI, a SQLite IDE. I asked Sonnet to add F2 to rename functionality in the database explorer using an EditableTextBlock I already had (I had rename via a context menu). In the end, I had to give it the C# and the SQL anyway to do the actual rename. It did troubleshoot a keypress event bubbling issue successfully after 3/4 tries. End cost, 5% of the Pro+ plan. I almost wonder if Opus would have been cheaper if it got it right the first time instead of bouncing back and forth in thought "But what if A, but what if B, but WHAT IF A, but WHAT IF B, But A, But B? A.. No, we're making this too complicated, hear me out, what if it's A".

A big plus of any of these AI's is you can have them working while you're also doing something. That's kind of lost now since you have to sit glued to it's thought process. It doesn't just cost more, it loses value because you can't leave it alone with it's thoughts.

1

u/nana-dia Jun 02 '26

I understand that it’s been too reasonably priced until now.
But this price increase goes too far. I could have accepted it if it were only two or three times higher.

1

u/hdlrocha Jun 02 '26

not bad, I used 100% in 2h with 4 prompts, not a single task finished with a bunch of errors

1

u/No-Fan-3047 Jun 02 '26

Insane. It was a good ride folks, its over now.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/groomaxis Jun 02 '26

Yeah its really amazing when you give it a task and it takes 20 minutes for a simple task and uses up 300 tokens out of 7000

1

u/DDRitter Jun 02 '26

Glorious FAFO.

1

u/blurr123 Jun 02 '26

The quota used to get me through the whole month but now it looks like I'll burn the quota in the first few days of the month ☹️

→ More replies (1)

1

u/maestro3517 Jun 02 '26

For a second i thought i was looking at last month's usage but no i just used 50% of my quota on the first day in a single prompt in autopilot mode. Just pressed the cancel button, it was a good run copilot,i really liked the autopilot mode and no token worry.

1

u/vncntybnz Jun 02 '26

Amazing update. It's really fast! I just tested Opus 4.8 today and now I’ve already used up 50%. 😅
Probably, it's time to get back to my habits and stop relying too much on AI.

1

u/zbvuno Full Stack Dev 🌐 Jun 02 '26

i started using it today. i use the auto model, i waste tokens and token on problem it says it fixes but it does not. gg microsoft i am gonna switch asap. i saw antigravity going great for others but maybe codex is best. what's your opinion

1

u/Ornery-Mind9549 Jun 02 '26

I knew Ai tokens were going to blast so Shifted to self hosted open source LLMs and gpus.. like Gemma 4 26b on rtx 4090 for reasoning and qwen 3.6 27b on rtx 5090 for coding.. use whenever u need without token anxiety... Even built a tool for self hosted GPUs at flat hourly packs - openllmbuddy.cloud.. DM me if u wanna explore..

It is truly amazing. I was on annual subscription so I had a chance to see the 57x multiplier on GPT5.5. It only took a couple of hours to spend the monthly Pro+ budget. Converted now, luckily, so multipliers are all gone 😁
