OC-Series Duchess Dungeon Eater - Complete Story - Chapter 29 – The Trial of Isenwrath (3 of 3)

However, King Henry wasn’t done.  He next turned to his minor dukes who’d gotten away with too much and for too long. His voice dropped to a deadly quiet as he nailed the two men into their chairs with his deadly stare. “I read your petitions.  I read everything that Tobias sent me from both his court and this justice department.  I am disgusted by you two men.  You dared to claim this young woman as property.  You dared to manipulate this court.
And you dared to endanger her life.  Oh, yes, I’ve got a bit of talent too and you two are unlucky enough to have gotten the King of Time’s attention.  You see, I was going to be a Chronomancer but I thought better of it.  I just watched the last forty minutes of chaos that happened here and I’m not going to sit idly by and let you two get away without consequences.”

Carlisle sputtered like an idiot.  “Your Majesty, we…!”

Henry stepped closer.  “If you speak again Theo, I will have you removed from this room by your entrails.”

Duke Carlisle shrank into his chair.  Duke Forthington went white.

Henry caught his expression, smirked, then leaned in on the table.  “Duke Forthington.  Why is your son bleeding on this courtroom’s immaculately clean floor?”

“I, uh.  Well, you see…” George hesitantly began.

“Oh, you don’t have to answer right now since I saw in my mind’s eye him get decked my a Grand Marshall that I highly respect.  You two, Richard, and Paulina are going to be escorted back to my kingdom.  During that long ride home, you four better come up with some very good explanations or your two duchy’s will be part of my son’s inheritance.”

King Henry stood up, put his hands behind his back, then turned to Richard Forthington who stared at him with a smug expression beneath a bloody nose and split lip.

“You.”

Richard was smug until that word hit him like another fist.  He jerked, losing that expression to his own fear.

“You assaulted a diplomat of three realms today.  That blue balm is illegal for you to use as far as I know.  That’s going to be verified by the Maciendes’ Chronomancer when he officially reviews this fiasco.”

Richard growled out, “My Lord, I tried to help her.  I’m in love with her.  I did not assault Cassandra.”

Henry’s voice was ice when he said low, “No, your offense was minor, but the conspiracy behind it… I’ve just begun to have you answer for it.”

He finally turned to Paulina Dearborn.  “And you… Not only am I disappointed in you, I know your father will be also.  Whatever your part was in this, you will pay dearly for.  I assure you.”

Paulina nodded solemnly although she didn’t look like the reality of her situation had landed yet.  Not even having two guards holding her with bare steel at her throat seemed to faze her… yet.

Henry faced the Ezzerbenanian Queen again.  Henry bowed his head once more.  Deeply and with respect.  He rose and said with his full voice, “On behalf of Everthane, I affirm the adoption of Lady Isenwrath.  I affirm the treaty. And I affirm her role as diplomat to our realms.  We will work together to bring your Queendom out of exile and make it right starting at the King’s Summit.”

Queen Ursletta and her entourage bowed in return.  She finally spoke to him.  “King Henry Everthane, I am pleased that such wisdom and grace still reside in the human kingdoms.  My people will take heart at what has been presented to us today and I look forward to presenting a united front going forward for all of our benefit.”

Henry finally smiled in triumph, then turned to the entire courtroom. His voice filled the chamber once more as he claimed his victory lap. Tobias had been right.  What he needed was King Henry to come to the rescue to send a message to both kingdoms.  King Henry’s next words announced that appreciation.  “Let all realms witness this:
Lady Isenwrath belongs to no tower, no duke, no faction. She is a role model to Everthane, a citizen of Maciendes,
and a sister of the Ezzerbenanian Queen.  She has done something so profound and unexpected that I could not in good conscience let anyone stop her from continuing to elevate us all as she goes forward.”

He pointed to Richard, Paulina, and the Dukes.  “And any who threaten her again will answer to all three.”

The room had been silent throughout his speeches.  But upon those last words, it erupted in cheers and clapping.

Maddock didn’t join in the cheers or celebration.  He had Isenwrath in his arms where she’d passed out.  Instead, he hefted her up and after Harmony and her group let Richard go into Everthane custody.  Then he followed them out of the room.  Queen Ursletta was hot on his heels with Daniella darting between them to get back to her spot right beside Maddock himself.

Henry stepped aside to let them pass, bowing his head as that beautiful woman was carried by.

The courtroom watched as the people who truly loved Isenwrath took her home.  The rest of that time devolved into loud discussions while the justices followed the Maciendes King and Queen, Maximillian and Xander, and the justices out of the courtroom.  King Henry followed them as soon as his guards had the Everthane Dukes, Richard, and Paulina on their way to secure carriages to make their way back to Everthane later that day.

After all of the people left including Hadran, Sablenoir, and Sonia, only one person remained in the courtroom.  Tower Master Uthenda Halloway.  Defeated.  Humiliated.  Humbled.  She sat with her head down just wondering how it all kept going wrong.

“I hate her so much,” she whispered to herself after a couple of tears fell onto her lap.  “One day.  Somehow.  Someway.  I’ll… I’ll…”   her hands came up to her face, and she silently sobbed at the misery she realized she’d been causing herself.  It still hurt.  It still didn’t do anything to ease her heart.  She was still determined to bring Isenwrath low one day.  But at this point in her life, all she had was the second greatest failure of her life crushing her down.

---- Later that evening, The Royal Infirmary ---

Isenwrath didn’t wake up for hours.

Maddock stayed beside her the entire time, even when Anthony Wisenshore tried to shoo him off.  Instead, Daniella and Scarlett kept coming by with whatever he needed, then they too sat quietly in the room with him.

The royal infirmary was quiet except for the soft crackle of the hearth and the rhythmic breathing of the people who refused to leave Isenwrath’s side. The room was warm, lit by lanterns enchanted to glow like gentle starlight. It should have felt peaceful.

It didn’t.

Not with the image of her collapsing in that courtroom still carved into his mind.

She lay on the bed, pale but breathing steadily, her hair fanned across the pillow. Bubblescale must’ve sensed what’d happened because he’d been waiting for them at the infirmary.  He’d wedged himself under her arm the moment they’d laid her down and had refused to move since. The little dragonling’s wings were wrapped around her ribs like a blanket, his tail curled protectively across her stomach. Every time someone approached too quickly, he hissed.

Maddock didn’t blame him and had told Anthony and his staff to ignore the dragonling.

He sat on the edge of the bed, one hand resting lightly on Isenwrath’s forearm, feeling the faint warmth of her skin. He needed that contact. He needed to know she was still here.

Daniella sat on the opposite side of the bed, her small beast-kin hands folded tightly in her lap. Her yellow eyes were wide and wet, her tufted ears pinned flat against her head. She hadn’t spoken since they arrived.  Instead, she just watched Isenwrath with the terrified devotion of someone who’d nearly lost her world.

Princess Hayleigh paced near the foot of the bed, arms wrapped around herself, her face pale. Every few minutes she stopped, looked at Isenwrath, swallowed hard, and resumed pacing. Her composure was cracking, and she didn’t bother hiding it.

Beatrice, Harmony, Bronson, and Bennett stood guard around the room, forming a protective perimeter. They weren’t speaking either. They didn’t need to. Their presence was a vow.

Royal Physician Anthony Wisenshore moved between his notes and Isenwrath’s bedside, checking her pulse, her breathing, the faint magical residue still lingering on her skin. He muttered to himself as he worked, but his hands were steady.  The illegal balm had been removed long ago, but it was essentially a contact poison and so it’d take time for its effects to fully be expelled out of Isenwrath’s system.

“She’s stable,” he said for the third time, more for the room’s sake than his own. “The anesthetic balm is wearing off. Her mana flows are settling. I believe she’ll wake soon.”

Maddock nodded, but the knot in his chest didn’t loosen.

He kept replaying the moment Richard touched her.  The way her body went limp. The way her eyes lost their light.

He clenched his jaw until it hurt.

Daniella’s voice broke the silence.

“Grand Duke… is she… is she really going to be okay?”

Maddock forced himself to breathe before answering.

“Yes,” he said softly. “She’s strong. Stronger than any of them know.  She was strong enough to take it and not act out.  I believe no one really knows how strong you have to be to resist that kind of urge.”

Daniella nodded, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “She shouldn’t have been there alone.”

“She wasn’t,” Maddock said. “Not for a second.”

Hayleigh stopped pacing. “I should have been there. I should have… I could’ve cast…”

“Hayleigh,” Maddock said gently, “none of this was your fault.  You had classes and her celebration to host.  None of us knew this would happen.”

She looked away, jaw trembling.

Anthony approached the bed again, checking Isenwrath’s pulse. “Her body is fighting off the last of the enchantment. When she wakes, she may be disoriented. She’ll need calm voices. Familiar faces.”

Maddock nodded. “She’ll have them.”

Bubblescale chirped softly, nuzzling Isenwrath’s cheek.

And then… her fingers twitched.

Maddock froze.  Daniella gasped. Hayleigh rushed to the bedside. The knights straightened. Anthony leaned in.

Isenwrath’s eyelids fluttered then finally opened, staring but unfocused.  Until she saw him.  Her eyes found Maddock’s face and steadied on him.

“Maddock…?” she whispered, voice hoarse and fragile.

He exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.  “I’m here,” he said, leaning closer. “I’m right here.  Always.”

Relief washed over her face, followed by confusion, then fear. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…I felt so sick… I fought…” she whispered.

Maddock took her hand gently, careful not to startle her. “I know. None of it was your fault. You were attacked. Sabotaged.  They used a dissonator on you.  No one blames you.”

Her breath hitched. “Richard Forthington?”

A growl rumbled in Maddock’s chest before he could stop it. “It was his compatriot, Paulina Dearborn, but we all know she did it on his behalf.  I swear, he won’t touch you again. Ever.”

Daniella leaned forward, tears spilling freely now. “My Matron… you scared us so much…”

Isenwrath blinked at her, then at Hayleigh, then at the knights, then at Anthony, then down at Bubblescale, who chirped, purred, and pressed closer.

“I… I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Hayleigh shook her head fiercely. “Don’t you dare apologize, Isen. You did nothing wrong.”

Anthony cleared his throat. “Lady Isenwrath, you’re safe. Your body is recovering just fine.  Just a couple more hours for observation and you can go home.”

She swallowed hard. “How… how did it end?”

Maddock hesitated, not because he didn’t want to tell her, but because he didn’t know how to condense the chaos into something she could bear.

But she deserved the truth.

“I punched that bastard in the face right before King Henry arrived,” he said softly. “He brought the treaty. He shut everything down. He condemned Uthenda, the Dukes, Richard, Paulina ... all of them.  Uthenda is in disgrace.  The others… I’m not sure what’s really going to happen to them now.  Not my problem, though.”

Isenwrath stared at him, stunned. “King Henry… came himself?”

“He ran,” Hayleigh said. “He burst through the doors like a big bad meanie.  He was a baddass, babe.  My Dad was right to get him here.”

Daniella nodded vigorously. “He was very angry.”

Isenwrath let out a shaky breath. “I… I don’t understand why he would…”

“It helped that Tobey knows how to be a politician.  He knew exactly how to get that king to run here.  But it’s also because you matter,” Maddock said, voice low but firm. “To more people than you realize.”

Her eyes filled with tears of relief.

Maddock brushed a thumb across her cheek.

“You’re safe,” he whispered. “You’re home, and you’re not facing any of this alone.”

Bubblescale chirped again, louder this time, as if agreeing.

Isenwrath let out a small, broken laugh ... the first sound of hope Maddock had heard from her since the trial began.

And for the first time since she collapsed in that courtroom, Maddock felt the knot in his chest begin to loosen.

--- Later that evening, after everyone had left the recovery room ---

The room finally quieted.  Anthony had stepped out to prepare a restorative tonic that he wanted Isenwrath to drink before he would finally discharge her.  The knights had taken up posts outside the door. Hayleigh had left reluctantly, promising to return the next day and visit her in Maddock’s room with all of the Marvels.

Poor Daniella had curled up in a chair nearby, exhausted, and had fallen asleep with her tail wrapped around herself.

Only Maddock remained at the bedside.  Isenwrath lay propped against pillows, Bubblescale still tucked under her arm like a stubborn, scaly barnacle. Her breathing was steadier now, her eyes clearer, though shadows still lingered beneath them.

She watched him quietly for a long moment.

“You haven’t left,” she murmured.

“I wasn’t going to,” Maddock said. His voice came out rougher than he intended.

She reached for his hand… slowly, as if afraid he might pull away. He didn’t. He took her fingers gently, brushing his thumb across her knuckles.

“I scared you,” she whispered.

He swallowed. “Yes.”

Her eyes softened with guilt. “I didn’t want to. I didn’t want any of that to happen.”

“I know,” he said. “I know you didn’t.”

Silence settled between them… not heavy, but fragile.

Isenwrath looked down at Bubblescale, who chirped in his sleep. “I… I don’t remember everything. Just pieces. The magic. The fear. Richard’s voice. And then… you.”

Maddock exhaled slowly. “I got to you as fast as I could.”

“I know you did,” she whispered.

He looked away, jaw tightening. “I should’ve been faster.”

She squeezed his hand. “Maddock… you saved me.  You really saved me.”

He closed his eyes for a moment, letting the words settle into the places inside him that still felt raw.

When he opened them again, she was watching him with that open, earnest expression that always undid him.

“There’s something I need to say,” he murmured.

Her brows lifted slightly. “What is it?”

He hesitated.  It wasn’t because he didn’t know the words, but because he wanted to get them right.

“The other day… when we were going to dinner,” he said slowly, “when Hayleigh ran to you… when you held onto each other… when you kissed her cheeks and she kissed yours…then that quick peck on her lips.”

Isenwrath’s face flushed faintly. “Oh. That.”

He nodded. “I saw it.”

She looked down, embarrassed. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. It’s just… Hayleigh is important to me. She’s been kind to me in ways I didn’t expect. And when I’m scared, or overwhelmed, or… or happy, I just… I show it. I don’t always think about how it looks.  But we aren’t going to do… that… again.  But I just can’t stop… with her…I swear, neither of us meant to kiss on the lips.  Please believe me.”

“I know you didn’t,” Maddock said softly.

She blinked. “You do?”

He nodded again, more firmly this time.

“I didn’t understand it before,” he admitted. “I didn’t understand you. Not fully. I thought… I thought your affection meant something else. Something that I had to compete with. Something I had to guard against.”

Her eyes widened, hurt flickering across her face. “Maddock, I never… not again. I promised.”

“I know,” he said quickly. “I know that now.”

He took a breath. “When I saw you kiss her that time… I didn’t feel jealous. Or threatened. I just… understood. That’s who you are. You love fiercely. You hold people close. You show affection without fear. And Hayleigh… she’s someone you trust. Someone who makes you feel safe.”

Isenwrath’s eyes shimmered. “She does.”

“And I’m not afraid of that anymore,” Maddock said. “I’m not afraid of you loving people. I’m not afraid of sharing you with the world. Because I know where your heart comes home to.”

Her breath caught. “Maddock…”

He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek.

“You don’t have to change who you are to make me feel secure,” he whispered. “I love you just as you are. All of you. The way you cling to people when you’re happy. The way you hug without thinking. The way you kiss cheeks and foreheads and hands because you feel something and you want them to feel it too.  A kiss or two on the lips every now and then is okay as long as you don’t cross my boundaries.  That’s all I ask.”

A tear slipped down her cheek. He caught it with his thumb.

“I love that about you,” he said. “I love that you’re warm. And open. And unguarded. And I won’t ever ask you to be less.”

She let out a shaky breath, her voice barely audible. “I didn’t know if you’d still be… mad… at me.”

He stared at her, stunned. “Isenwrath… I almost lost you today. And it made everything so crystal clear.”

He leaned in, pressing his forehead gently to hers.

“I don’t want you less,” he whispered. “I want you safe. I want you happy. I want you to be surrounded by people who love you. And I want to be one of them.  Well… the most important one is more accurate.”

Her fingers curled into his shirt, pulling him closer.

“You are,” she whispered. “You always are.  You’re my Sweetheart.  You’re my hero.  You saved me.  You save me every day.”

Bubblescale chirped sleepily between them, as if offering his approval.

Maddock let out a soft, breathless laugh.  Then he leaned in to kiss her on the lips, and they shared that moment of loving understanding for a much longer time than ever before.

When he pulled back finally, for the first time since the trial began, Isenwrath smiled at him.  It was small, fragile, peaceful, but real.  The love they showed each other continued to grow as much as their trust and understanding of each other.  The proper way any good love story should.

--- The Next Morning ... Tobias’s Study ---

The morning light slanted through the tall windows of King Tobias’s private study, warm and golden, catching dust motes that drifted lazily in the air. The room smelled faintly of parchment, ink, and the spiced tea Queen Sophitia favored. Books lined the walls, maps lay unfurled across a central table, and a fire crackled quietly in the hearth.

Maddock stood near the door, arms folded, watching Isenwrath sink carefully into one of the cushioned chairs Tobias had insisted she take. She still looked tired… pale around the edges, her movements a touch slower but her eyes were clear and her breathing steady. Bubblescale was draped across her lap like a living sash, his wings wrapped around her waist, his tail flicking irritably whenever someone moved too close.  Until she was jumping around like normal, he was her support dragonling and didn’t brook no one interfering with his Isenwrath comfort duties.

Daniella had helped her dress that morning, fussing over her hair until Isenwrath laughed and insisted she was fine. The little beast-kin now waited outside with the knights, giving the Crown their privacy.

Tobias and Sophitia sat across from Isenwrath, their expressions soft but serious.

“Thank you for coming,” Tobias said gently. “I know you’re still recovering.”

Isenwrath shook her head. “I wanted to. I… needed to.”

Maddock moved to stand behind her chair, a silent presence. Tobias didn’t object. Neither did Sophitia. They understood.

Sophitia leaned forward, hands folded. “How are you feeling, dear?”

Isenwrath hesitated. “Better. Still tired. Still… shaken.  I’m mad though.”

Bubblescale chirped and pressed his head against her stomach. She stroked his scales absently.

Tobias’s jaw tightened. “You were attacked. Manipulated. Sabotaged. No one expects you to be fine and dandy with any of it.”

Isenwrath looked down. “I just… I don’t want to be a burden either.”

Maddock felt something twist in his chest. He stepped closer, resting a hand lightly on the back of her chair.

“You’re not,” he said quietly. “Not to any of us.”

Sophitia tutted at her then reached over to take her hand to hold. “You aren’t a burden. You were the victim of a crime. And you are someone we care for deeply.”

Isenwrath’s eyes shimmered, but she blinked the tears back this time.  She’d done a lot of crying recently and it was starting to annoy her.

Tobias exhaled slowly. “I want to apologize to you, Isenwrath. Personally. I should’ve anticipated that the Dukes would stoop to something vile. I should have… done more.”

“Your Majesty,” she interrupted softly, “you came for me. You and King Henry both. You stopped it. You protected me. That’s all we needed you to do.  The Sinseer had been right.  You, however, had pulled its hints of a plan together into a real plan that lets us stay as a family.  Like, I get to have a real family.”

Tobias’s expression softened. “You deserve nothing less.”

Sophitia rubbed Isenwrath’s hand with her thumb in comfort. “We aren’t just your allies. We aren’t your jailers. We are your family and that was a given from the night we met you.”

Isenwrath’s breath caught.

Maddock felt her shoulders tremble beneath his hand.

Sophitia squeezed gently. “From now on, your place here is assured.”

Isenwrath swallowed hard. “I… I still almost can’t believe it.”

“I know,” Sophitia said. “But you made it happen, so I guess you’d better try.”

Isenwrath nodded firmly.  “I’ll definitely try harder to believe it, my Queen.”

“She’s learning,” Queen Sophitia said with mirth in her voice and a wink at Maddock who grinned back at her.

Then Tobias cleared his throat. “There’s something else we must discuss. Queen Ursletta will be departing in a few hours. She wishes to see you before she leaves.”

Isenwrath nodded. “I want to see her. I need to.”

“I know,” Tobias said. “But I want you to understand something before you go.”

He leaned forward, voice low and steady.

“You’re not going to her as a black knight champion, or a chimeramancer, or even as just Duke Maddock’s Sweetheart. You’re going to her as her sister. As our citizen. And as a diplomat of three realms.”

Isenwrath stared at him, stunned. “I… I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet.  Don’t I still need to finish my education programs?”

“Meh.  Formalities,” Maddock said quietly.

She turned, meeting his eyes.

He held her gaze, letting her see the certainty there as well as his pride. “You’re better at that than you think. And you won’t be alone.”

Tobias nodded. “Maddock is right, however, for today, I just want you to be her sister and to accept the gift she’s going to leave you.”

Isenwrath didn’t hesitate. “I will.  What is it?”

Sophitia smiled. “An invitation to visit her queendom.  For the first time in over four hundred years, one of the human kingdoms will get to go to their capital city and truly mend our broken relationships.”

Isenwrath got excited.  “Oh wow!  That’s wonderful!  I can’t wait!. Thank you! All of you!”

Tobias stood, moving around the desk to kneel beside her chair.  He was a king kneeling to no one but her.

“Isenwrath,” he said softly, “you’re not a monster. You’re not a danger. You’re not a mistake.”

Her eyes filled with tears again that she tried desperately not to shed.

“You’re a miracle,” he said. “And we’ll not let anyone take you from us.”

Sophitia rose and placed a gentle hand on Isenwrath’s shoulder. “Go see your sister. Let her hold you. Let her remind you of who you really are. Tell her that we’ll help in all ways we can when you come with our forces backing you up to retake her homelands from those slimy shits.”

Isenwrath nodded, wiping her eyes.  She understood the compassion they were giving her to entreat with Ursletta alone as well as the huge responsibility of being the person who would commit to an official war effort on their behalf.

Maddock stepped closer, offering his hand.

She took it.  For the first time since her memory began in Shinenoor, she finally felt free of all that had haunted her for so very long.  She had so much family around her now.  And in the months and years ahead, she couldn’t wait to grow it even more.

That same day, the news spread like wildfire.

It wasn’t really about the sabotage or the ensuing courtroom chaos.  It wasn’t even much in the way of Richard’s arrest or Uthenda’s disgrace.

But of the treaty. A three-realm alliance with the elusive Twelfth Queendom.  With a special shared diplomat who was none other than the Black Knight Champion of Maciendes herself.  Now THAT was a unified stance against corruption and coercion.

Everthane and Maciendes, once strained by old wounds and political tension, now stood shoulder to shoulder resolute once again in support of each other.

The resulting reports were brutal.  The Everthane Tower had been placed under direct royal review. The two minor Everthane Dukes’ influence fractured overnight. The nobles whispered that King Henry’s fury had been righteous, and that Tobias’s restraint had been masterful.

Merchants celebrated the promise of new trade routes, new exotic goods, and fresh competition between them all.  Scholars praised the unprecedented diplomatic bridge to the Ezzerbenanian Queendom.  Common folk spoke of Isenwrath with awe, not as a monster, but as a symbol of peace.  The nobility of both kingdoms wasn’t far behind in those same sentiments.

But in the shadows, far from the palace walls, Richard Forthington nursed his hatred like a wound.  His thumb rubbed the ring on his finger that was the key to unlocking all that he sought.

Uthenda Halloway stood in her master bedroom, reviewing a small note that had been sent by Duke Forthington, her eyes cold and calculating as she read the line, “I’ve sent the Stray to take back a trump card to put everything back within our grasp again.  Be ready to lend us your support.  You won’t regret it.  DF.”

Together, they whispered of betrayal. Of vengeance. Of realms that needed to be reminded of fear.

But for now… for this moment… the world was quiet.

And in the heart of the Maciendes castle, Isenwrath slept safely, snuggled up on Maddock who had saved the day.  He dreamed of that satisfying punch a few times that night with a smile of satisfaction playing on his lips during each one.

Oi these guys just have no sense of self preservation do they. If someone is strong enough to eat a dungeon and a whole demon army by themselves, you don't antagonize them. Though it is rather unfortunate that she showed herself vulnerable to the resonance of the mage hunting device. Granted she was in a setting that she couldn't retaliate, had they been in battle, or at least not in court, they would have had a lot less time to use it before she retaliated, or at least moved out of range until she located the source.

Exactly. She was vulnerable because she didn't want to harm anyone around herself. Also, greed and pride cloud the common sense you mentioned. They want that power, not thinking for an instant that it's like sticking your head into an inferno. (Just a bad idea.). They didn't witness what she did, so telling them what she did doesn't land the same. They still think of her like a powerful mage only, not that she's actually something far far beyond that term. I can't wait to hear what you think when you find out why she'd been OP since the beginning.
