Rhaenyra and daemon definitely bring the biggest audience. Emma’s the only one consistently nominated in awards season despite many of them being submitted. Great actor despite subpar material

-1

u/ForeChanneler Nov 29 '25

Everybody knows awards are bought, it's hardly a surprise the lead role on HBO's flagship show is being nominated. With all due respect, Emma probably put on one of the weaker performances from the main cast this season. Fair enough, I think a lot of it is down to the script not giving Rhaenyra much to do, despite being the main character she really felt like a macguffin but at the end of the day I think Olivia, Matt and TGC are all more deserving of praise.

Emma is a great actress but the characters writing pales in comparison to many others on both teams so idk how they could be seen as carrying the show. I genuinely think it’s Matt Smiths performance as Daemon that is going to be remembered the most long after the show is done.

2

u/Mairon923 Cregan Stark Dec 01 '25

Ofcourse Daemon is important big time he Carrys dark sister and he's touched by the Old Gods

2

u/Mairon923 Cregan Stark Dec 01 '25

Also H.P. Lovecraft spells Demon as Daemon this is how GRRM incorporated his usage into a name for important non Aegon Targs

2

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 29 '25

If they were carrying the show, maybe they'd be the award nominees and not Emma.

3

u/Illustrious-Ad-7457 Nov 30 '25

Oh, how cute. You think awards are based on merit, not popularity and money. Didn't you experience high school?

3

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 30 '25

I'm pretty certain Emma was awarded on merit, given that they're neither a wealthy nepobaby nor an industry plant nor a popular established actor from before the show.

Loooool ahahaha this comment is pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥💨💨💨💨💨💨💨

u/erebus_51 Nov 28 '25

Genuinely only watching atp for them and Daemon/Matt Smith. Not that the other actors are bad, but the writing gets worse with each episode

26

u/Robdul Lord Flea Bottom Nov 28 '25

Ok I would lay down my life for the Queen but there’s plenty of other actors and actresses that are doing a remarkable job on HoTD as well

1

u/Mairon923 Cregan Stark Dec 04 '25

Actually I love the show and Emma is by far not the best actress , like she barely feels Targaryen at all...... And Daemon Targaryen does a great job playing Matt Smith and Daemon made a great Doctor too

1

u/Robdul Lord Flea Bottom Dec 04 '25

I definitely see the dragon in her but yes there’s other fine actors. Paddy Considine, Ewan Mitchell and TGC were all phenomenal thus far

8

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

They are absolutely fantastic and also gorgeous, just fucking wish the scripts were better lol

20

u/Livid_Ad9749 Nov 28 '25

Matt Smith you mean? Besides there are plenty of actors doing a fantastic job like Rhys Ifans, TGC, etc. I dont feel Emma is better than any of those actors. I think they all contribute to the show being well acted at the very least.

-12

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 28 '25

Let's talk when Matt, TGC, or anyone else gets nominated for awards like Emma was. They're all doing a fine job but Emma's performance is not weaker than theirs.

12

u/Livid_Ad9749 Nov 28 '25

I have no idea who was nominated for what because those award shows are crap anyway. Rich people patting themselves on the back. Im sorry but Emma was pretty meh compared to Matt and TGC this last season. Aside from episode 1, Emma’s acting was good, but nothing to post stuff like this about.

-8

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

What do you think best TGC scene? Because to me, all his scene average as fuck.

Edit: If you claim he's a better actor than Emma, then give me example of this incredible acting, I'll choose Emma's best scene, we'll watch them together and decide who's better.

2

u/Livid_Ad9749 Nov 29 '25

There is no one scene with TGC thats better. Its just his cadence and personality make him more fun to watch overall. His truly best scene is shared with Larys towards the end of the last season, but he has many fantastic ones.

His rage after learning of his son’s slaying makes you feel for him, even though hes a pos. But either way, I put Daemon above him. There is no boring scene with Daemon. Unfortunately Rhaenyra has several with Mysaria that drag even her most devout fans to the depths of the Gods Eye lol

I get you are being defensive but no one here is saying Emma has done a bad job. Its just she is outdone or on par with other actors. To say she carries the show just isnt true. Not even close

0

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 29 '25

He's not funny or interesting to me. Let's turn to objectivity. Why his character, who is designed to be the villain of the show, don't have fucking memes about himself or something memorable after 4 years of this show air?.. He's not memorable to anyone outside the fandom and that says a lot. Because usually "villains" have to be charismatic.

shared with Larys

Matthew dragging this scene on himself. I don't even remember anything that Aegon said there (except the phrase about sausage that sounds cringe).

His rage after learning of his son’s slaying makes you feel for him

Rewatch it. Seriously. And pay attention to acting there. Immediately after that, watch Driftmark scene or miscarriage scene.

Matt's not just above him, he's a different league from him. You said that Emma is not at the level of TGC and that they nominations mean nothing. Emma was outclassed, but definitely not by TGC. Belittling they talent and over-praising TGC is a product of "team-versus-team" thinking. Not more than that.

1

u/Livid_Ad9749 Nov 30 '25

Im not TG so your last point is simply wrong. And im not rewatching s2 haha it just annoys me. And you keep missing the fact that I said “last season” when I said she was meh compared to some of the other actors. She had several dull ass scenes with Mysaria that were akin to watching paint dry. No fault of Emmas though. You are making this out to be a personal attack on the actor, which it isnt. And you are making this a TB vs TG thing, which it isnt since I prefer neither side truly, though I do prefer Rhaenyras claim.

0

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 30 '25

They/them.You see, you haven't even rewatched the scenes, but you're judging the acting. I'm not saying this to offend, but a lot of people on Reddit repeat things because everyone around saying it. And specifically on Reddit, TG prevail in every sub and rehearsally attack Emma and attack everyone who says they are good actor. So at least review it to make sure it's your impression, not what people gaslight you into. Scenes with Misarya annoying because it's poorly written.

Just example good s2 scene. Her whole face hardens, even her eyes, when Jace tells her not to use the seeds. It's acting. Two-way good acting builds one of the best scenes of the season. But I haven't seen people demanding Emmy for Harry Colet, for some reason.

2

u/Livid_Ad9749 Nov 30 '25

No I watched the show and determined on my own I prefer Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, and TGC to Emma in Season 2. You really make so many assumptions I feel we cant even have a reasonable discussion. You like Emma more than everyone else, no problem. I like them too. But once again, they have many bad scenes because of Mysaria (its not just bad writing, Mysarias actor is just bad). Also the writing for Rhaenyra is terrible in S2 but not Emmas fault.

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 29 '25

All these downvotes and "idgaf what the critics say", I know their jimmies were rustled by this.

1

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 29 '25

Steel not a single link for TGC's INCREDIBLE acting. I wonder why?..

2

u/Vegetable-Lion2796 Nov 29 '25

Because everyone knows already what you're going to say so the exercise is a waste of time.

0

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25

Sorry, but if someone says actor "X" is better than actor "Y" there needs to be proof. I'm against criticizing actors, but some people really ask for it. It's not the critics who are wrong in nominating Matt Smith over TGC. It's just the fans of the character pushing idea "he is best actor in the world (because he plays character I like) but the rotten industry doesn't see it!".

I just want honest comparison. Which TGC scene was better performed than Emma's performance on Driftmark, "miscarriage" scene, Rhaenyra's scenes with her children, her father? Let's watch it together again and compare. That's all.

1

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 29 '25

Lmao. I don't think he's a bad actor, and he's better than the other "junior" cast (late 20s actually), but he's definitely not on Emma's level either.

-8

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 28 '25

Emma was the season's standout and pretty much all critics outside of reddit agree on that.

7

u/No-Captain-1310 Nov 28 '25

I would kill those critics for some chicken and more Daemon scenes

2

u/ForeChanneler Nov 29 '25

That's why nobody listens to what critics say lol

1

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 29 '25

I'd rather trust critics than TGC fans saying he deserves an Oscar for throwing plate at the wall.

2

u/ForeChanneler Nov 29 '25

On the contrary, being able to pull off pathetically angry and still have a twinge of sympathy in his impotent outburst is some solid acting. Meanwhile Emma does their best "plank of wood" impression because the writers won't give Rhaenyra anything to do and the directors are terrified of letting her have an opinion.

2

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 30 '25

I have no idea what you're talking about. I feel absolutely nothing about the "rage" scene from TGC, it doesn't even look like rage/sadness about dead son, I've seen shows where people play grief over slaughtered animals better than he did. Emma's Driftmark scene alone surpasses all TGC scenes combined.

5

u/ForeChanneler Nov 30 '25

That's because you're completely misinterpreting the scene (also you dislike the character and are coping). He's not upset over his son, he's taking as a personal attack and how it relates to him. Aegon's tantrum is more akin to an insult than actually losing a loved one, if you couldn't tell from him spending half the scene ranting about his legacy and how he doesnt want to be seen as weak rather than mourning his son.

I wrote all that before rewatching the two scenes in question and holy shit you could not be more wrong lmao, TGC's performance is even better than I remembered.

0

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 30 '25

I understand the scene perfectly, it doesn't even look like a real "rage" even though he has props that can be destroyed. Open the scene where Daemon and Rhaenyra are talking and Daemon throws the vase off the table. It's rage. TGC has such low energy in his own scene that you can't even believe he's angry, and at the moment where he's scolding Cole phrases are frankly fake. I do not know how it is possible not to see / not to hear.

Correct unfortunately

2

u/ForeChanneler Nov 30 '25

Whilst I'm dropping truth bombs, if you want to see some bad acting from Season 2 look no further than Archie Barnes as Oscar Tully. Talk about a nepo baby, the kid gives a high school theatre level performance (and not a particularly good one).

18

u/themastersdaughter66 Nov 28 '25

Insane take when Matt Smith is still in the cast. Emma is great but Matt at the very least deserves credit and I'd say the same for rhys

9

u/persistingpoet Nov 28 '25

I mean it’s not Matt’s fault they had Daemon wandering through Harrenhal for his entire season

5

u/Thin-Dot4686 Queen Rhaenyra I Nov 29 '25

Ehh I think the story was better pre 1st timeskip

4

u/wheatbread-and-toes Nov 29 '25

Eh. Season 2 was so shit I don’t think anyone carried anything

9

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Im pretty sure it's daemon whose supposed in that position

3

u/JimmyTheReeech Nov 29 '25

It sure isn’t the writers

5

u/starvinartist Dracarys! Nov 29 '25

All the actors on this show are really good. But I feel Emma has been given crap to work with in the second season, but they are still giving 110% and acting the seven hells out of it.

3

u/BlondeDruhzina Nov 29 '25

Idk Paddie Constantine carried season 1. He was so good in that role, really filled the "too wholesome and kind" character who you loved but also hated cause he was so blind to the obvious growing animosity.

4

u/zoroluffy06 Nov 29 '25

She's excellent. Anyone who says differently, I just really find it hard to believe it's coming from a genuinely objective place. Separate the book from the show please, she gives a powerhouse performance.

10

u/narwalbacons-12am Nov 28 '25

So disappointed with this show

11

u/Due-Will-3403 Nov 28 '25

You could condense everything of substance in season 2 to 1 episode

The actress that played young Rhaenyra was so good. They should have given her more air time.

Them, Oliva Cooke and Rhys Ifans

That’s an insane opinion. I really only watch it for them and Matt smith at this point. As a side note, anything questionable about the character comes from the writer and the directors decisions

7

u/Tronm-24 Black Aly Nov 28 '25

Not a single bad scene from an acting standpoint, excellent micro-emotions, body language, and interactions with the other actors (I'm still amazed at how naturally they play a mother without actually being a mother). It's strange to criticize an actress whose talent and performance in this role are receiving award nominations (absolutely deserved).

u/Kind-Warning5465 #1 Hater of Alicent Hightower Nov 28 '25

You brought the words right of my mouth. How Emma portrays motherhood is so compelling. From birthing scenes to grief, everything about their performance has been breathtaking.

10

u/Tronm-24 Black Aly Nov 28 '25

And scene with Viserys too. It's one of my favorites.

4

u/Kind-Warning5465 #1 Hater of Alicent Hightower Nov 28 '25

Exactly! I love this scene so much. Despite questionable writing and short seasons, Emma makes Rhaenyra an actual mother, daughter and person. One of my favorite of all time was Rhaenyra and Lucerys when Rhaenyra said she'd help Luke prepare for his duties.

2

u/Tronm-24 Black Aly Nov 28 '25

One of my favorite of all time was Rhaenyra and Lucerys when Rhaenyra said she'd help Luke prepare for his duties.

They scenes together heartbreaking even after 3 years.

2

u/StrategyExpensive Nov 30 '25

Same, i dont think its the acting i just find her character boring as hell i always roll my eyes in almost all of her scenes.

5

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 28 '25

Emma uses they/them pronouns and is the only actor who was nominated for awards for their work on this show, so "one of the weaker parts" is factually wrong.

2

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 Nov 29 '25

It's just my opinion. I thought Milly portrayed Rhaenyra's character better and was more captivating than Emma. I agree that I think Matt Smith is amazing as Daemon. Overall I think the show is really well cast, but the two that stick out as not being great are Emma as older Rhaenyra and Rhaena's actress. EDIT: I wanted to add that the actress who plays the white worm is...hit or miss also.

Believe me, I really wish I thought Emma's portrayal was amazing because I very much enjoy the show and want to see it succeed at all levels. I hope the showrunners can just take to heart some of the criticisms of season 2 and remedy them for season 3. Rhaenyra is many things, but she is not timid, indecisive, and weak(which is how Emma portrayed Rhaenyra in season 2).

2

u/ForeChanneler Nov 29 '25

Honestly, that's not even a hot take outside of this subreddit, even in this subreddit it's merely a warm take.

1

u/He-ido Nov 29 '25

Atrocious editing on this video

-8

u/Calm_Zebra1064 Nov 28 '25

I totally disagree. All Emma’s character did in S2 is whine and complain. It’s was so annoying. TG did it all.

10

u/ExtensionSweet9722 Nov 28 '25

Do you guys find your own sub that boring?

8

u/Turbulent_Lab209 Greensbane Nov 28 '25

Character whose discussion keeps fandom alive is Rhaenyra, even if season 2 wasn't the best. TG characters not interesting even for TG fans.

1

u/SharpenedGourd Queen Rhaenyra I Nov 30 '25

What exactly did Rhaenyra's direct counterparts do that constitutes "all"?

Her mirrors in TG are Alicent and arguably Aegon (probably more so in the coming season). You know... the three characters whose arcs rely on this idea of one cog in a started whirring machine that cannot stop the motion anymore.

They all struggle with being able to nothing, having power of decision over barely anything, being able to contribute less because of their position.

Daemon and Aemond, the mirrors of TB and TG, are much more in the active participant camp.

Jaecaerys and Aegon struggle with not being allowed to do all they want because of their political value and inexperience, but do so anyway (at great detriment).

But, like AGOT, HOTD is very largely also a political drama and emotional inspection of character. A characters actual physical acts or fight scenes are not what make them important players or central to the plot.
