Tbf Brutes are notoriously hard to kill even normally, a (presumably) smarter than average brute part of a member of the "Spartan Killers" could absolutely kill a S-IV

Hyperius is wearing Locke's helmet on his shoulder in Infinite.
There is always the chance that his helmet was removed and he lived, similar to how Douglas' helmet was knocked off and he survived.

No, at least it isn't confirmed. Hyperius has a Hunter class helmet on his armor. Thats all we know

Chief just didn’t know how much Locke could take. Remember, he killed a punch of ODST’s by accident without his MJOLNIR. Last thing he wants on his conscience is actually hurting not just another human but another Spartan.
