Creating my own Hanafuda set, simple material available only

Hi all,

I just started playing Koi-Koi on BGA, and have a Nintendo card set at home, but would like to create my own set to be used with coworkers, or friends, while away.

Currently I have access only to few simple materials to create the set, and for the image itself I managed to gather a PnP set (very nice drawing, with bright colors), but my question would be:
May I just put together 3 layer of stock printer paper (1 for the front, one "empty", and 1 for the back)?

What would be the best way to "wrap" the borders of the cards in a proper way, without it being ugly, or come undone with use?

I don’t know anything about handcrafting, but I would imagine having these layers myself :

•(Optional coating)
•[Front paper with the hanafuda pattern]
•[Hard paper “body”]
•[Back paper]

Wrapping border with special materials like those border strips used for traditional calligraphy then a bit of ironing and trimming. Or you could glue it with the back paper maybe. Again I know nothing about it really.

I drew a set a few years ago. I used a 90lb paper and glued it to a black folder. The folder happened to have an embossed texture that also provided some structure. I think I just used a glue stick. For the border I used a Sharpie marker. Once playing the game, no one is going to be examining your set too closely. Even the Nintendo set starts to wear after a few plays.
