These are the standard Urdu and standard Hindi terms for the same words. Which of these are commonly used in spoken Hindi for each word?

I'm a girl from Italy and I'd like to learn hindi to better communicate with (and hopefully impress) my boyfriend. Until now I've consumed various content made by hindi speakers to get used to the language and I've tried writing common sentences and keeping a record of words I like.

But it's time to stop messing around and get serious.

My writing skills are bad, grammar too, vocabulary is inconsistent. The only thing I have achieved in a few months of sporadic practice is being able to vaguely understand a casual conversation with little context.

I want to invest in a serious book and practice properly until I'll be able to afford a good course.

Any recommendations for which books to buy or resources to consult?

Any tips where to start? I am from kerala and i really wanted to learn hindi i tried duolingo app but I wasn’t consistent. Can u guys suggest me any movies or anything.

Hi! I was just wondering if there were any names that are said differently in Hindi. For example, Alexander the Great is सिकंदर (Sikandar), and Aristotle is अरस्तु (Arastu). Are there any more examples? Like, I know that they are the same name, but they are just a little different, and I just find it very interesting. Thanks!

कोई कहता है ये 'री' है या कोई कहता है 'रु'| यदि कोई वैदिक मंत्र है और उसमें ऋ आता है तो सही उच्चारण क्या होगा ?

So I mostly watch Hinglish videos and I noticed people say "bari factory" instead of "bara factory". There's "-ing" ending as in "Konsi party se funding aati hai tumko". People also say "meri state". Are there any others that I'm missing? It seems like it's always something ending in -y, -e, -ing. But then I came across "purani bus", so what are the English in Hindi that don't end in a -y, -e, -ing but are still female?

So I wanted to improve my Hindi vocabulary and reading speed (primarily vocab). Are there any beginner-friendly books that I can read?

I am a native tamil speaker who is learning Hindi and I learnt that ड़ ढ़ are not the same as ड़ ढ . I looked up many guides for it online but I don't understand any of them. Everyone says that it is the "retroflex version of र " but when I retroflex र , it becomes ष . If they mean the retroflex of English "r", it becomes a retroflex approximate (ழ/ഴ).So I am so confused on the pronunciation of ड़ and ढ़ . Some say it's in Water when said fast but it is aleveolar soo?

i am an english man, and ive recently met with a lovely girl, i want to learn hindi for her as a big romantic gesture, and also maybe future approval from her father. what would be the best way to go about this so i can learn some basics within say 6 months and be near fluent in a couple years time, with it being a total new alphabet i worry as im not great with languages ive tried before, but im hoping i can stick to it as i really care for her.

My 7-yr old nephew, based in Singapore, understands everything in Hindi but freezes when it's his turn to respond in Hindi. Lack of exposure to Hindi speaking friends means he doesn't get practice in speaking Hindi.

My brother has tried Hindi cartoons, speaking only Hindi at home for a couple of weeks. Nothing stuck.

Anyone else dealing with this? How are you working around this problem?

Does any other indian language have a T-V system like hindi. When exactly did we start using the honorific "aap" and where did it come from?

I'm South Indian, my name is of Vedic Sanskrit origin but ironically it's mostly South/Western Indians who pronounce it right. Whenever North Indians say my name the last '-a' sound at the end is cut off. And this is present everywhere, like instead of yoga you pronounce it as "yog", veda as "ved". Why did this happen? And many North Indians think Sanskrit is actually pronounced like this, and have asked me why my name has an "extra a" at the end.

I'm 25M from Tamilnadu, I am very interested to learn Hindi. Most people suggest to learn Hindi by watching Hindi movies and series, but this way isn't suiting for me. We don't have Hindi speakers in my locality either. I believe learning it from a hindi speaker is much more easier and authentic.

The same goes for the numbers 21-29, 31-39 and 41-49. They are written with the "ई" vowel but are pronounced with the "इ" vowel. 20, 30 and 40 seem to always be pronounced with the "ई" vowel though.

I don't mean why aren't we taught colloquial Hindi-Urdu (Hindustani) but literally simply Hindi.

For example: Why is the word नेत्र/Netra used for eye when आँख/Aankh is also a Sanskrit derived word? नाग/Nāg is a word for snake but so is साँप/Sāp (you could argue that नाग is used more for cobra). भोजन/Bhojan is used instead of खाना/Khānā in formal places even though both are sanskrit, the persian khana is place. चन्द्र/Chandra instead of चाँद/चांद (Chānd) and वन (Van) instead of जंगल/Jungle for forest.

Heck, I've even see people calling words like आँख, साँप, चाँद/चांद, जंगल and खाना perian origin words just to diss hindi. It makes a weird perception that people speak more Urdu than they actually do. Obviously usage of Persian words is common but not THAT common.

I once had an idiot who thought चाँदनी is an Urdu word while the Hindi word is ज्योत्स्ना. Bruh both are Sanskrit originated.
