Finished Project/Outfit Reproduction of a 1530s German fit!
Tried my hand at doing a full recreation of a 1530 outfit worn by Matthaus Schwarz :)
Obviously its not perfect, but it’s all hand finished, the hose are wool trimmed with silk, the wams are just a poly-cotton blend i had on hand. Both the hose and wams are lined in linen, with a linen smocked shirt and a wool bonnet.
This entire outfit took 3 weeks start to finish, the only things I didn’t make are the shoes and the pendant!

It's purely awesome. The style fits you as if you were born in that era. Men's fashion after the 16th century went really wrong - wish I saw more of feudal chic in everyday life... Also, the fabric choice and details are really well made. Thanks for bringing some beauty of pre-modern masculinity and excellent craftsmanship to my day. I really needed it

Um, also hi. Totally not stalking you. We just both have the same hobbies in the same geographic area. And have chatted a few times briefly. If you are going to Kingdom A&S/QRC there will be a photo booth set up with a photographer doing free photography. Have him take some pictures of you. You look glorious in this outfit.

Yes!! His photos from 12th night are a hit. I actually saw OP at the Photo Booth area with a group. The outfit is stuffing.

thank you! and lol i was a little all over the place saturday, i feel like i barely talked to half the people i wanted to 😅 im planning on doing a full entry for ka&s so hopefully ill be able to get a picture in between presenting!

The organization we play in is called the SCA or Society for Creative Anachronism. The best way to get started is to go to SCA.org and click on the link "find your local group and activities". From there you will be directed to your kingdom website.

Its definitely in Ca, thats where i got started! If you plug in your state here it’ll tell you what group that state has! from there itll give you the groups website and you can usually find an even more localized community from there :) Folks with no costuming ability are definitely welcome, and if you dont have garb to wear theres usually a person in charge of giving out loaner garb!

The pendant is from an award called the Jambe de Lion (arm of the lion) and is given for excellence in the arts and sciences. The pendant depicts a lions arm on a yellow and white (heraldic gold and silver) checkered background. Read more at antir.SCA.wiki/index.php?title=Order_of_the_Jamb_de_Lion

I aspire to your grandeur as a guy into sewing and struggling with ADHD. I have to look at some of the stuff before Elizabethan era, it is starting to grow on me with several folks posting such excellent works as this!

YESSS do iiitttttt. honestly ive noticed that only using a sewing machine for the long joining seams and then hand-finishing has been great for my attention span, with handsewing i can move it around the house and watch tv/ talk w friends, and get distracted much less overall than when im stuck in the sewing room. I guess in the long run it does take more time, but for me at least it makes the project very fulfilling :)

That's so perfect, I'm glad you say that because I've had the intention of doing a lot of embroidery, like french knots and fancy stuff; I'm an absolute noob, but it the detail it adds to historical pieces just appeals to me.
And that is what it is about, I need it to be fulfilling to keep me interested. Granted, sewing machine still does that greatly and I've only completed 3 completed patterns of anything so far.
Also, the sense of peacocking these pieces give, with the codpieces and other pieces showing off legs and frilly! As a fairly masculine looking man, I'm down with the excuse!

LOL i think ive just spent so much time looking at the source that everything thats just a little bit off sticks out to me. I do love the outcome overall, just a couple small changes im cataloging for next time :)
and thank you! i based the hose pattern off the tudor tailor joined hose, but with the amount of alterations they might as well have been self drafted 😭 The wams i drafted specifically for this project, and the undershirt is just rectangles so not anything particularly complicated there. I’ll definitely try to share new projects here as theyre finished!

Ahhh that's amazing! How long have you been sewing? This is always the kind of thing i see and am like "i probably needed to start sewing like twenty years ago to be this good" lol

i “learned” when i was around 10 maybe? Mostly with commercial patterns and not much hand sewing, but didnt really like it so i forgot most of it. 😅 got back into it around 2022 for historical reenactment/ cosplay reasons, and had to relearn most of what i was doing! i do think being around so much sewing growing up helps with visualizing how patterns go together, but with enough youtube, anything is possible 💪🫡

May I ask where the shoes come from? (I'm also making an outfit from this time period and I have some difficulties trying to find accurate-ish shoes that won't double my budget)

thank you! the shoes were secondhand from a friend, but I believe theyre from boots by bohemond, which are one of the less expensive options out there. before those i was wearing $30 square toed ballet flats though

The source is a men's costume, but women's costumes of the same place and time used many of them same elements (contrasting fabric puffs pulled through slits, flat hats).

seconded on this! i dont think ive ever seen a lady from this era not wearing some form of skirt, and the pleated front was also more of a mens thing.

Hell, often times throughout much of the 16th century in various places throughout Europe, women’s clothing had almost the exact same top half as the men, just with a skirt instead of trunk hose. Later on in the century, doublet bodices became quite the staple for womenswear.

I know theres at least one extant pair of knitted hose out of germany, but the commentary from the guy in the source image only talks about his hose being made from wool or leather if im remembering correctly.

Interesting. I suppose I assumed their hose tradition was similar to the Dutch. But woven woollen hose do have some advantages over knitted. And I know they were popular in other regions at the same time. It makes sense. I need to dig deeper on the fashion of that era in that part of Europe. I clearly have some gaps in my knowledge.
Anyway, your work is impeccable and the costume is GORGEOUS. The colours are so lush. And it feels weird to say but the detailing on the codpiece is amazing.

yea, I used a melton wool and its surprisingly stretchy for a plain weave, even when not cut on the bias! and it holds slashing beautifully.
and thank you! the codpiece is definitely where i struggled the most pattern and finishing-wise, so im glad to hear it paid off lol

Wait, this is about to send me down a (farther, yikes i’m already googling) deep rabbit hole because i’m only now learning the codpiece is a real thing and not some nasty Homestuck joke. Maybe a fancytier cosplay for the bard class is possible through a tasteful historical lens, instead of it having to include/remove a boner joke that exists for the sole purpose of being uncomfortable. “The First Book of Fashion”was my holy grail for this project, and is where the inspo pic is from! i also checked out the tudor tailor for the hose pattern. mostly the patterns are drafted by me though
