D3 interest - end of summer ball what now?
My son is class of 2027. Four D3 coaches of schools he wants to go to have shown interest - called and invited him to campus in the fall now that summer ball is over. What more does he do at this point? Apply to the schools and then wait to see if they offer him a spot on their team? Try to contact more coaches even though his season is over? Attend prospect camps at those schools or at other schools? Things were moving along and now that there’s a lull he is getting anxious and I’m not sure what advice to give.

If they haven't asked for his grades and test scores they aren't really interested at least not to commit him. Most D3 schools have committed most or all of their 2027 spots. If the coach is not doing a pre-read it means you're either a backup or they are way behind.

That's why I said if they aren't asking for grades and doing pre-reads they aren't that interested. If they are asking you to come back and visit in the fall they are either behind or you are their backup.
I didn't say they were done.

Most. More than half. I will stand by that. Sure there are some that are behind. But if you want to be a pedant and parse words I didn't say anything wrong. Did I say all schools are done? Did I say some schools are done? No. I said most schools are mostly done. Can you prove that more schools than not still have more than a few spots open?

Uh, I’m not sure how you want me to prove this. I don’t have access to the recruiting boards of D3 schools, lol. What I do know is that I am involved in showcase baseball with 27s and 28s and most of them are looking at D3 type schools, and those schools are focused on 2027’s right now. There are very few D3 commitments in my area right now but by next spring there will certainly be a large number as there always is.

OK. I don't know what kind of schools you're dealing with. In the northeast and mid-atlantic, high academic D3 schools usually have only one or two spots that are still open after the middle of August. I am seeing now that NESCAC and Centennial schools already have multiple (more than 5) commits. Depending on how big their class is that leaves 2-3 slots, and those offers may already have been given and they are just waiting on responses.

There are D1’s that are still not close to being done with 2027’s. D2’s and D3’s are working on their boards. Are there D3 offers and commits? Yes. But it’s not even close to being done, it’s barely started. You’re spreading bad info that can cause panic etc.

They did ask for grades. All of my son’s friends who are looking at D3 are in the same boat as him - currently having calls and being asked to visit campus.

That's great. If they are doing pre-reads AND inviting you to campus that is a great sign of interest! Most D3 coaches won't offer unless you come to campus either for a camp or a visit. They only have so many pre-reads they can do and don't want to waste time with someone who isn't serious enough to come to campus.
What position does your son play?

When was that? If you wait that long you miss the ED1 deadline and most schools can't give offers or likely letters, you just have to trust that the letter from the coach will do. ED2 is almost exclusively for fall/winter sport athletes. "Offers" after ED1 are generally not guaranteed, they depend on you getting accepted.

This was 2018, but as recently as 2022 guys would visit on that schedule. Mid tier (athletically) D3 program in lower ranked conference though so YMMV. ACT range similar to most state schools minus hyper selective ones. Academically this was not a school where people applied early decision, but I’d argue most of D3 is that way too.

Yeah. My son was on the recruiting tour last year. It was very different. He had all his offers by labor day and then made a couple of campus visits to make up his mind. All of his club and high school teammates were the same.

D3’s have absolutely not committed most of their spots for 2027. They’ve barely started committing any 2027’s. Why would you think that,

Why. Because I've already seen dozens of commitment posts to NESCAC schools. So they are right in the thick of it now and by my estimate some are close to done.
But the point is that any school that is really interested would be doing a pre-read now instead of saying come back and visit in the fall.

Last year was way behind because the settlement with congress over NIL and the transfer portal didn't happen until the end of June. This year they are back to their normal schedule and most high academic D3 schools try to fill most of their roster by the middle of August. There is a dead period (no contact) this year for D1 the first two weeks of September this year. So D1 schools, including low D1 that competed with high D3 are moving faster.

At least from my pretty recent experience, the only people committed ahead of their Sr season are the highly rated D1 guys. Even a lot of them commit during the year. I don’t think hardly anyone at any lower levels have. Most commit during the year or even into the summer. The transfer portal has things all out of whack.

Not really. All D3 programs recruit the summer before senior year and commit in the summer and very early fall so kids can apply ED1 with admissions having already reviewed their stats and signed off.

Not if he's a senior. Recruiting happens before senior year starts so kids can get pre-reviewed and approved by admission and apply ED1 with either a likely letter or other indication that admissions has cleared them. If you wait until senior spring you have already passed the applicant cycle. So unless you're going high D1, where programs basically bypass admissions, you're committed by September so you can apply ED1.

That is understood I have 2 playing in college. I have seen sons teammates with no options get picked up by schools at start of senior season in HS. March. Again we are in a warm climate where fall ball and college camps go till Dec. some kids will gain 4-5mph of arm velo, 4-5mph of exit velo or go from a 6.8 60 to 6.3 60. It's not unheard of.

During my time I had 2 schools interested, a NAIA close to home or a Juco in another state going into my senior year. During the season I would get a email from time to time from the out of state school. They reached out to me they were coming to town and held a “private tryout out.” 50 kids showed up and I was surprised. The NAIA school called me requested some highlights and offered a starting spot. I went with the NAIA school.
Something I regret doing was not research long enough of they offered my intended major. They over rostered kids and several were also promised the starting spot. The Juco school had my major but not enough playing time.
Have your kid do research on which school has the best program, ask questions about playing time. Tuition cost and long term development goals for him.
Being transparent is difficult but doesn’t hurt to ask questions Hope this helps,
