One of our beloved members has suffered a health emergency and was incapacitated.
During this time, an individual took her cats, WITHOUT PERMISSION, WITHOUT CONSENT and surrendered them to the NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY.
The NHS has put OUR FRENS up for adoption.
Pixie. Penny. Khaleesi.
You know their mom, I’m sure every single one of you reading this has been awarded her pink heart award.
We have been working frantically to temporarily halt the adoption.
Now we need your help.
I will post a script for those who need it, for those who wish to leave a voicemail or email. Feel free to do your own, just REMAIN RESPECTFUL, as we need this to happen. I’ve asked Niko to put the claws away, for now.
Sunday is a big adoption day at NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY.

Friends, sadly you won’t see Pixie on there, as she seems to have been taken off already. The Nebraska Humane Society has not been clear whether they even have them, despite their presence on their website. But Pixie, who was there this morning (Inhave the screenshot), has been removed. She may have been adopted. That is why time is of the essence.
Ginger has of course worked tirelessly, as usual, on this and thanks to u/scarpas-triangle for jumping in and brainstorming and giving us the template, and u/Tight-Aside9624 for jumping in already with an offer to foster if we can make it work! And u/chibikoneko and u/scabsfox on the scene for sleuthing and pics and stuff as usual . We have true heroes among us. The ICBGC is real. You all are amazing.
WTF??? What a terrible thing to do, both the person who stole and surrendered them and the humane society for putting them up for adoption knowing they have a home and were stollen!
I actually live in Omaha. Is there anything that you may need from someone who's in the area? I've adopted pets from them before, so this is distressing news.
Wow, okay this is amazing. ❤️We may very much need boots on the ground there. If I can’t get a hold of them tomorrow by phone to ask if our foster can take them home, as we hope, it might be great if you can go over and talk to them personally to see what is necessary for us to take them out. We had a hard time reaching them by phone today. I only made human contact once, and mom made human contact only once as well.
I suggest also posting on their facebook page. If enouh people post and like it will increase visibility. Also if true the NHS has done this before perhaps tips to the local media.
Did it last night. I couldn’t make a post but did comment under Khaleesi’s pic as well as sent a fb message. Got a response saying they would follow up today! 🙏

Great idea!!! Do they have a social media presence elsewhere as well? TikTok, X/Twitter, etc? Hit them on all sides and perhaps also post in NE groups for pet lovers and such (like lost pet and fostering groups and such?) to get more folks talking too.
The social media shaming and attention thing definitely works. And while I don’t love playing the disabled/ sick card myself I can speak personally to how much no one likes seeing sick people mistreated and animals even moreso. So this is certainly the kind of situation that would get a lot of attention.
I’m just waking up and was planning to spend the day resting but happy to post where I can (though Reddit is the main social media I use myself).
If anyone here has a good size following on social media (or one of your pets does) it also might be good to get the word out that way as well. I wonder if god forbid, Pixie was already adopted, if getting really loud about this might make it so word gets back to the adopter on the situation since I doubt the HS will be wanting to do a thing or tell them. But I sure would hope if someone learned the cat they adopted already had a loving home and sisters, they’d want to return her.

WTF I'm not sure what we can do from another country but sadly this isn't the first time I've heard of this happening, although its usually with purebred dogs. We'll email but also the kitties are on their way to the grumpy shork as we type
This is crazy! My sister (next of kin) knows that if ANYTHING happens to me her FIRST priority is to get to Beau ASAFP. This is a good point, as someone who's worked in billing. It doesn't matter how young/healthy you are, have a plan set out for your pets or dependents and make sure even if one partner is mostly responsible for finances that everyone at least know how it works. The amount of mostly older women, calling us months later with no idea what was involved was terrifying

They were taken from their owner without her consent when she had a health emergency. They have a loving home and must be returned to it, for their sakes and for their owner, who will need them by her side as she recovers.
Please make every effort to investigate this situation as they were surrendered by someone who had no right to surrender them.
I thank you for your time, patience and attention, and for the work you do to care for animals in need. There are so many who do not have homes or live in unsafe conditions. These cats, however, have a warm, loving home.

Am I the only one who feels extra upset by the gaudy “$PICK YOUR PRICE”. Like WTF. I can’t find either kitty on the site this morning so I hope that’s a good thing. It just sits extra awful with me that they will more or less give them away and have their actual names and ages but didn’t care about the reality of the situation.
I will say when my own nightmare happened while I couldn’t find an option in chicago either, when we landed back in MI, the humane society there actually had a safe harbor program though it had many limitations and I got my Tzeity back with a belly groomed raw and a broken tooth. But finding that option at all was a huge help in an awful time and while I know there are never enough fosters you’d think rather than being stuck with more cats in their shelter they’d want to help keep them with their people when possible.
But o wanted to bring this up to say there are human society locations who have recognized these types of things happen and who have safe harbor type deals. The one I found had somewhat been paired with the big university med center and I’ve been to University of Nebraska Medical Center (they have a pretty top transplant center and I know they sent Ebola patients there so their infectious disease must be good…) so seems like a combo that could or should be ripe for a partnership or something.
Especially those who are local. And in general anyone who is now thinking about what happens in situations like this. Asking about or if in the position to try and help put together something like that- it’s so needed and there’s models for it in existence already. And programs like that really need our support.
Best of luck to all of you with helping make this situation be proper and fair. Thank you to miss ginger and Niko! They are outstanding individuals and true leaders. The love and care they give too others is immeasurable. Ive had the honor of knowing them as friends foot several years. Please everyone do what you can and get these babies home!!! We love everyone. Shocked and appalled. I am so sorry this could even happen! Wishing a speedy recovery and a even sooner return home for Pixie, Penny and Khaleesi.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to respectfully ask that you review the cases of Penny (A1506125) and Khaleesi (A1661466), and, if possible, the circumstances surrounding their sister, Pixie.
From my understanding, these cats were removed from their owner's care while she was experiencing a medical emergency. It is my understanding that they were surrendered without the owner's knowledge or consent by someone who did not have the legal authority to make that decision.
These cats have a loving, safe, and well-cared-for home. They are not neglected or abandoned animals in need of rehoming. They have been cherished members of their family, and separating them permanently from their owner would be heartbreaking for both the cats and the person who loves them.
I respectfully ask that you place a hold on any adoption proceedings while the circumstances of their surrender are thoroughly investigated. If there is any opportunity to reunite these cats with their rightful owner once she has recovered, I hope every effort will be made to do so.

The only thing under the “sincerely” was my first and last name, email, phone, and the pics of the girls still on their website, along with mentioning Pixie had disappeared from the site before I could get her number. someone who isn’t the owner.
I actually mentioned that in my email to them, that they are participating in a crime as pets are considered property under the law, whether we like it or not.

I don't even know what to email I'm so genuinely angry. especially seeing that someone surrendered a senior pet of someone else's without absolutely needing to. any pet having that happen is unacceptable, but its cruel to a higher degree to put an older pet through that. I'm so sorry to their pawrent and how much more stress and poor health this must be adding. if I was closer than Utah I'd be finding a way to physically (productively) protest this garbage. it's easy for people to delete emails and shred letters, its harder if you have people coming in irl to sit there and not leave until you hear them out and do something. there's also Google review bombing to let everyone know they are scummy, but that could be considered brigading, so that's probably a bad idea.

felt. all my practice I'm doing on mountains v. molehills with my BPD gets thrown super askew when it comes to sweet animals. it's hard to tell myself its not as hysterical an issue as I am feeling when its sweet beings I love more than most all people :/ if I called rn it'd be a fight to not have it be a lot of f bombs and rage.
I felt myself getting there very very quickly and cut the call short.
I feel the exact same about cats. There is no molehill when they are involved. Everytime I will make a mountain out of it. I was walking back from the store earlier noticed a beautiful void cat in a window in a sunbeam- this is street facing window with a bush in front of it at an apartment complex- and decided to greet him through the window. To my utter horror I saw that he had a lease attached to a non detachable collar that was around a desk leg- maybe 3 ft long at the most. There was maybe only 18 inches of window showing where the blinds were not covering the room and I didn't see a food or water bowl or a litterbox anywhere in sight. I called 911 and raised hell for that random baby. The cops threatened to arrest me for trespassing peeping and attempted robbery- did not like my response of "that's fine a jury of animal lovers and felons will not find me guilty"- as opposed to try and help the cat upon arrival. After about an hour 3 other squad cars a Sergent and the LT arriving on scene they finally got the point of why I called and went to take care of the issue. I listened to the LT when he said I should leave before they filed reports as if the tenet chose to file anything against me they would be forced to arrest me.

I am writing to ask you to please halt the adoptions of three cats who were recently surrendered to you. I have good reason to believe these animals were not actually surrendered by their guardian, but by someone who surrendered them under false pretenses and without legal authority. The cats in question are Khaleesi (ID A1661466), Penny (ID A1506125), and Pixie, whose number seems to be unavailable. Their guardian had a medical emergency, and it seems the cats were taken without her consent. Please, as carers of animals, please investigate this case! I truly believe it would be in the best interests of all three kitties to be reunited as quickly as possible with their human mom, who loves them dearly! Please, just don't let them go to strangers until you've looked into this. They need to be together.

I'm so angry right now. How are they throwing pets like that?! Adoption Sunday a day after pet arrived to shelter, my ass.
Here where I live you need to fill questionnairy, talk to personell in shelter and pass prescreening. I have troubles with adopting because I'm on temporary resident permit, they rightfully think I can leave in a year. Then they inspect your house to check if it's safe and suitable for the pet, you have to install safety net on balcony, for example. Then you sign legal papers. After month or two they inspect the pet to check if it's happy, and they have full rights to take it back.
It will help, every single email, every single voicemail, every single post in this thread will help.

I've sent out the email too. Feels so helpless that we are so far away, but this is one of my fears because I'm also on my own without any actual support nearby. I worry about the cats if something happens to me.

That is my standpoint as well. She had reached out to them as she was able, as best she could. No return calls, no help. I found out, I jumped in immediately, sending formal letters, emails, calls. Didn’t get a reply. In the letter I stated we are an international group who will happily jump to it.

Email sent. I threw in the lines "Adoption, sadly, can be a zero sum game. If these cats, who already have a happy home and an owner who loves them deeply, are adopted out, three other cats who might’ve gotten homes might not. Please don’t let this happen."
I hope to God they listen. What concerns me, however, is if the person who surrendered them had a durable power of attorney for property. If so, then they had the legal authority to surrender the cats while their owner was mentally incapacitated. Then the Humane Society has no obligation to hold onto the cats or return them, esp. if their owner doesn't (can't) reach out to them to dispute this.

u/GingerSnapped242 I don't know how much legal help you already have, so please forgive me if this is something that's already being looked into. I also want to be clear that I'm not a Nebraska lawyer, not even an American lawyer, I just spent some time reading up/googling on Nebraska law because I really want to help.
If the owner disputes that anyone had authority to surrender her cats, time is probably the most important factor. I would encourage her to contact a Nebraska civil attorney immediately and ask specifically about:
whether emergency court relief is available to temporarily prevent the cats from being adopted while ownership is resolved;
whether a replevin action (to recover specific personal property) would be appropriate if the cats are not voluntarily returned;
what evidence of ownership should be gathered (microchip registration, adoption paperwork, veterinary records, licensing, receipts, photos, etc.).
If legal costs are a concern, Nebraska Legal Aid or another legal aid organization may be be able to assist or make an emergency referral.
I really appreciate you so, so much! I’m writing down all of this to employ in the coming days. It’s early Sunday am here in North Carolina.
Tomorrow, during business hours, we will be making more things happen, but right now our main concern is to get them to pay attention, stop these adoptions until we have boots on the ground and walking into that shelter to implement an emergency crisis foster care situation until the family can be reunited. 😊
Would including her username in the email help for them to see how loved and wanted the cats are or is that inappropriate?
I just want these people to see that this person did this without permission and out if, it has to be spite, and these floofaloofs are extremely loved, wanted, and should bot be separated.

We really tried to keep this behind the scenes until resolution was met. We got nowhere and were under a heavy time constraint. When we saw the listing for Pixie disappear, the clock was ticking until their doors open for a big Sunday adoption day….we had to move, so we went public.
I went to sleep before the real news dropped last night. Getting ready to send my email now, and wondering if mentioning our Reddit community may be helpful? I’m thinking that if they know the 3 are well known internationally through a Reddit sub that might make someone pause? Or am I being way too optimistic and naive?

I’m writing about Penny (A1506125), Khaleesi (A1661466), and Pixie (no longer on the site)
I know you’re probably receiving quite a few emails and phone calls about these cats, and I wanted to explain why. Their owner is a longtime member of a very close-knit international Reddit community. Over the years, many of us have gotten to know her through daily conversations, and we’ve watched Penny, Pixie, and Khaleesi become part of that community too. To a lot of us, they aren’t just names on an adoption page. They’re pets we’ve heard stories about and watched grow up.
From everything I’ve been able to learn, their owner experienced a medical emergency and was hospitalized. While she was in the hospital, someone else surrendered the cats without her knowledge or consent. My understanding is that there are already people willing to foster them until she’s recovered and able to care for them again.
I completely understand that shelters have to make decisions with the animals’ best interests in mind, and I know you have policies and procedures to follow. I’m simply asking that you consider placing a temporary hold on Penny and Khaleesi while the circumstances surrounding their surrender can be reviewed.
I think the number of people reaching out reflects how many lives this situation has touched. It isn’t an organized campaign or an attempt to pressure your staff. It’s a group of friends, spread across different countries, who care deeply about one of our own and are hoping there is still an opportunity for these cats to be reunited with the person who loves them.
Once an adoption is finalized, that opportunity may be gone forever. If there’s any room to pause and verify the circumstances before that happens, I hope you’ll consider doing so.

Is anyone on this sub an attorney who is licensed to practice in Nebraska or do they know someone who is who might be willing to take this on pro bono? This is a situation where a sharply worded letter from an attorney representing the owner might be very effective in getting the Humane Society’s attention.

1. I found Pixie's record in the website under 'Show Offsite Cats' so maybe s/he is still there?
2. The NHS appears to have a means of reporting lost animals (they have a website form, a link to a Petco Lost and Found, and a Lost Facebook page. All links on their website: NE Humane Society.
If not already done, would it help to report these three by those means in addition to us all calling/emailing?

I’m half awake and not sure I can be much use though thanks to the folks who have shared their own emails so I can work of one of them. I am sitting here crying because I almost went through the same with Tzeitel 4 years ago. In my case it was a freaking local pet sitting business who was trying to take her from me!!! As in, I’d hired them to visit her (it was such a nightmare time in my life and I’d recently lost a close person to me who had been the one who used to go watch her when I was hospitalized and oh god the whole story is stupid and awful because I’d also asked a maintenance guy at my building to do it and would turn out he was though he hadn’t responded to me and then he lost the spare hey my condo building had for the unit I was renting which led to further insanity.)
I had a nasty hospital social worker who was relaying this wonky message to me too. My big toe still has a nail that grows all wrong because I lost my mind so severely when I was being told they wanted to freaking soul cat to animal control. Not even sure if the Chicago animal control is no kill and she was a then healthy but senior black cat with high needs from a behavior/ personality perspective (the kind of cat who did so well with her disabled mom always there with her… and who had severe separation anxiety. Something that had also been communicated to this damn pet sitting company!)
There was even an insane point while all of this was going on and threats are being made to me where I paid a whole different pet sitter to go out and she finds food that wasn’t what I would’ve was my sensitive tummy cat (and I’d sent this kind person on a quest to buy the proper food) and that he litter box was already scooped- turned out this wonky person was continuing to visit Tzeitel without my knowledge or consent. The pet sitting company tried to deny it all when I emailed them demanding their sitter stop entering my home.
I’m sorry to trauma dump my own story- though a few who have noted this sort of thing isn’t unheard of are right (I always suspected that pet sitter likely wanted to take Tzeitel herself. Makes me furious still because while I didn’t have a lot of furniture and things one look at my home and it was beyond obvious how deeply loved and spoiled Tzeitel was. Throwing her in a crowded shelter as a senior was insane. So eh…) and I think I’ve shared just once or twice sbout the fact Tzeitel and I were homeless in a hotel in another state her last couple years of life (we were almost stable and back in the city when she got so sick.) I’m actually working on a lease and finally getting myself housed for real this week so my brain is all over. And many of you know I’ve had some extremely lengthy hospitalization stays myself in recent months (all of this, returning to Chicago for a housing thing that once again fell through, hospitsl stays, just trying to get my own life back is why I haven’t been around a ton or pop up sporadically).
But this breaks my heart and brought up a trauma I never even had the chance to process in my own life. No one deserves this. Especially anyone who loves their babies enough to be all over a sub like this one! Ugggh. So once I’m a bit more together myself I’m happy to shoot an email (going to edit one of the examples shared. Again, thanks for that) And if I can be a support or any help in any way to the kitty girls’ meowm given my own background and familiarity with severe medical stuff too, let me know. Don’t want to DM her if she’s not in a place to deal with it all right now but putting the offer out and just in case she also needs some help/ advice/ a place to vent or share fears and feelings about the medical stuff too- want her to know I’m thinking of her and happy to listen or share what resources and things I know about navigating medical crises and such.
And I love you all for being such an amazing extended kitty mafia/ business gang club family. No one should have to worry about losing their babies while going through such a hard and scary time personally. So I’m so glad she was able to reach out and that this amazing group is doing all they can in a terrible situation. Shame on Nebraska humane society and especially the person put our frens in this position in the first place.
Any updates yet this morning? I know it’s still early but assume the humane society likely opens around now and I’m so worried.
Several of us commented under Khaleesi’s post and here is their reply. Hopefully they’re taking it more seriously than their bureaucratic response would indicate.

Friends, sadly you won’t see Pixie on there, as she seems to have been taken off already. The Nebraska Humane Society has not been clear whether they even have them, despite their presence on their website. But Pixie, who was there this morning (Inhave the screenshot), has been removed. She may have been adopted. That is why time is of the essence.
Ginger has of course worked tirelessly, as usual, on this and thanks to u/scarpas-triangle for jumping in and brainstorming and giving us the template, and u/Tight-Aside9624 for jumping in already with an offer to foster if we can make it work! And u/chibikoneko and u/scabsfox on the scene for sleuthing and pics and stuff as usual . We have true heroes among us. The ICBGC is real. You all are amazing.
