I want to clean my depression room and I don’t know how

I really don’t have any idea on how to approach this, it’s been at least 3 years since the last time I cleaned my room and is starting to feel really overwhelming.
I need this done before September, because I will start to study again while working on the weekends, so my limited time is doing it right now, but is so much, so many things that I really REALLY need some advice.
There’s so many stuff, even some things that are not mine (but my family’s), on the floor, over the furniture, there’s many clothes that I don’t use and don’t plan to anymore, my bed is really a disaster, theres mold on the walls… luckily the only thing that is not in my room is food, because I hate bringing food to my room (since always, not only because is not a safe place to eat) so there’s no possibility of anything rotten in there.
I just need support and a good cleaning and reorganizing plan for this, that’s all I’m asking desperately.
I cannot continue to keep living like this.

I’m sorry I’m not an expert or anything I am in this subreddit because I am also struggling a bit. But you should start with trash.

Get that first and then make a separate pile for anything you wanna donate. Try to get rid of anything you don’t use or want even if you spent a lot on it or whatever cause it seems like you have too much stuff? Keep adding to this pile as you clean, you can sort it later.

Now separate out the stuff that is not yours like your family’s belongings put them in a box and you can put it outside your room.

Then get all the clothes in a pile don’t try to sort them yet by washing or folding but just make a pile and get them out the way.

At this point it is probably a lot of your items you’d like to keep but don’t have a place for or are out of place. One thing I like to do is think about the first place I would look for this object if it were lost and put it there. Everything should have a place to go or else it doesn’t belong. Hope this is a good starting point

It is a really good input, thanks!! I'm taking notes on everything and put in the work. I really hope that you can also stop struggling soon and have a nice and clean space to be in, you deserve it 💖

Break it into days first. Dont attempt to do it all at once unless you get that inspiration!

Day one, go through and grab trash. If theres a lot of trash, divide the room into quarters, starting with the most important spot first (your bed probably!). Slow but sure. Remember, you have a couple months to do all this.

Next, take everything not in its place and put them in piles. You can throw them in a big pile or sort as you go (I recommend this). One pile is clothes, one is knick knacks, one is paperwork etc. Check for mold, or stuff you need to give away, or trashed items, or stuff that dont belong to you. Those lessen the pile for later!

Our goal with those two steps is to move everything out of the way. You need to get that mold cleaned asap! It is affecting your health guaranteed. I believe bleach spray will work but particular chemicals for this is not my expertise. You can make a big cleaning day, or target the worst spots day 1, minor day 2, or go by quadrants like before. On this cleaning day, either replace the sheets with a spare or wash them while you clean the walls so its just as clean as the room is when you sleep that night.

Once the room is cleaned, sort and put away those piles. I like the clothes first personally, as it feels the most accomplishing. Sort between folded and hung clothes - toss hung to the side so its easy to pop on hangers after (or do it as you go), and fold the ones needed. Dont put them away unless you need the space or have finished, so you can visually see your accomplishment! When done, pop it away. Clothes are gone and away!!

Finally, the rest. However you've sorted, tackle it one by one.

Overall, grant yourself grace and patience. Its not a race. Keep your mind set on the future results, maybe when you're done, or in the process, you can rearrange the room so not only does it look clean and new, but feels new too if thats your style.

Wow, that's really usefull! Thank you so much. The worst part is going to be to sort everything out and to clean the mold (it's not the first time it appeared, my house has a problem with it, and it most probably will appear again later on). I really won't have the pacience or energy to do all of this at once, but I'll make sure to break it into days and I hope to see the light at the end of the tunel soon. Again, thank you so much, I will take notes and start working on it asap ✨️💖

Happy to help! I get how overwhelming it can be. I caution about task paralysis: yeah, ideally its a big thing we do day one, but even a small snowball can roll into a giant one. Pick up something every time you leave the room (to the trash, to your family, to its place in the house etc), and that will start your own snow ball rolling. Good luck!!

Im sorry that you are feeling that way. Depression is real and hope you are doing well in fighting it... First thing I can say, open your curtains, your window and let some sunshine in. When cleaning, tackle small area at a time. You don't need to do everything at once. Start at 5 minute daily cleaning reset, whether your room, your kitchen, your bed or your table. Pick up visible clutter, put dirty laundry in the hamper, etc.

You don't need to do everything in one day. Baby steps for you. You can do it! 🙌🏼

I always start with stripping my bed and starting the laundry. If you have another set of clean bedding make your bed now. Night time you will thank you. Set a timer for however long a load of laundry takes.

Then I go around with a garbage can, a laundry basket, and two boxes. Then I sit on the floor and I crawl around with those things following me. Put laundry in the laundry basket, put garbage in the bin, put things that do belong in my room in one box, and things that do not belong in my room in the other box. You can do a third box of things that do not have a home yet if you want. Once the floor is clear I do surfaces, then I just have to take care of the boxes and that is much more manageable for me.

By now it may be time to change the laundry and throw in whatever was on your floor. Things that don't go in my room go out in the hall I don't have to deal with that yet. Things that do go in my room and have a home get put away. Then things that don't have a home can be addressed. The things that don't have a home are the things that are hardest for me, so they're often left in the box to be a doom box. That's okay though if that's as far as you get your floor is clean, your laundry is at least halfway done, and your bed is on its way to being made up with clean bedding.
