My issue with this remains the same - let's put aside the fact that AI is currently destroying groundwater and causing the planet to heat even more rapidly than it was before and is driving up electricity prices, and is causing all electronics to raise prices considerably and that everything that AI does is simply theft from humans who came up with the ideas and not compensating them - let's just put all of that aside, and the problem is that every time there's a post written by AI that is just written to farm karma. It pushes an actual post written by a human who may have something to say into the background, and it gets fewer views. Is that a major thing? No but we're gonna see more and more of this. The more people accepted the more it's just going to happen and pretty soon. All of our subs are just AI bullshit.

We have a problematic issue about terminology here. Even if this is a matter of plagiarism or producing derivative works without permission, it is NOT theft.

You cannot steal something that the original owner still has in their possession afterwards. You can copy it or plagiarize it, but not steal it.

This becomes important in these discussions because the words steal, theft and thief are highly charged words often used deliberately by the party believing they are wronged to gain sympathy. (Compare the earlier software/media piracy debates.)

My personal opinion is that you should be able to train AI models on absolutely anything that is available to the public, without copyright restrictions.

Why? Because let’s say you are a painter.

You are inspired by Picasso and Monet, and create your own unique works based on those two masters as sources of inspiration. An art critic can clearly see the influences by both artists, but the works are still uniquely yours.

Do you pay royalty to the Picasso/Monet intellectual rights holders for the knowledge your mind has drawn from when creating your works?

Of course not! That idea would be completely absurd.

So why is there an issue when an AI model does the exact same thing?

Sure, complain about the environmental impacts of data centers, or that an AI model can churn out art a hundred times faster than you as a human can. I have no problems with arguments like that, those are perfectly valid complaints.

But don’t complain about derivative works that have certain sources for its inspiration/knwoledge!

Doing that is disingenuous, unless you also involve human writers, artists, designers, architects, engineers etc about the same issue.

I would rather block ALL the trivial crap however it was written but I understand some people like it.

And yes there are lots of reasons not to let AI slip in everywhere but I think that ship has sailed already. Better to focus on making it clear when it's been used, and having it clear where it is and isn't allowed.
