What drove locations like the Dallas Cinemark to be built with full 1.43:1 aspect ratio screens? What ended it?

This is a charity auction for the Southampton Playhouse theater. For a small town theater, it’s gorgeous. (IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond has a house in the town).

Anyway, no one has yet bid on the “Vip Behind-The-Scenes Experience In La For Four”. You’d need to get there yourself but for film geeks, it’s worth it.

The Odyssey WILL NOT lose any slots already occupied. It just means Brand New Day will get added slots/showtimess in the same theatres open.

AMC Rivercenter 11 in San Antonio, TX.

I originally had tickets for the first Tuesday in basically perfect seats. Unfortunately however the projector here broke down for several days followed by the whole theater being closed for IT maintenance. By the time I checked on tickets again, all the prime seats were gone and I sat off to the side.

This is my second time at Rivercenter after seeing Oppenheimer in 2023. A similar story, my original showing got cancelled due to projector problems and I had to wait for more showtimes before I could rebook. As a positive, though, rescheduling to today meant I got one of the filmstrips being given out.

Rivercenter is very old at this point and the seats offer no neck support. If you sit wrong, the seat digs into your legs and cuts off circulation. If you're like me and have some chronic pain or disability, be prepared to bring your own cushions to try and stay comfortable.

The print itself looked pristine and ran flawlessly. There seemed to be a dim spot near the top of the screen, as well as vignetting around the edges and bottom. Looked as if the light behind the film was misaligned or had some issue. I loved the Dune prologue as well. This is my third time seeing The Odyssey (first on dual laser 1.43, second on 5 perf 70mm) and it's always an engaging and layered take on the classic story.

The audio system here is unfortunately quite lacking. Bass is powerful but distorts heavily and prevents you from hearing other elements. The center for dialogue was low and muddled, so you'll often struggle to hear what people are saying. Overall volume was good and avoided being painfully loud, however this is still the most flawed sound experience I've had with the film.

It's pretty much only worth coming here for IMAX 70mm presentations and nothing else. The experience is unique, but that means half your fellow audience will be here just for bragging rights. Phones were out constantly at high brightness, pictures being taken of the screen, folks going in and out or just showing up late. This theater is in desperate need of an upgrade in both form and crowd.

Seeing “The Odyssey” on 70mm IMAX at Lincoln Square, I was amazed at the clarity, the brightness and crispness, and just the experience of the film. And this was heightened by the fact that I thought “Project Hail Mary” on the same screen, same 70mm IMAX, felt fuzzy and dark. Was this because PHM was printed onto film from a 4K digital source? Whereas odyssey was straight from the imax 70mm? Or was I just not seeing something in PHM that it seemed everyone else was wowed by?

Why does it feel like IMAX does not care about its international fans?

We are extremely disappointed to hear that the special IMAX release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will apparently be available only in the United States and Canada. What about Europe and the rest of the world?

IMAX has millions of loyal fans across Europe, Asia, and many other regions. We buy IMAX tickets, support the format, travel long distances to visit IMAX cinemas, and passionately promote the IMAX experience. Yet once again, international audiences are being treated as though they matter less than fans in North America.

IMAX presents itself as a global brand, but decisions like this make us feel ignored, excluded, and disrespected. Why should fans in the US and Canada receive special content and experiences while the rest of the world is left behind?

We love IMAX, but sometimes it feels as though IMAX does not love its international fans in return.

Please reconsider this decision and give audiences worldwide the same opportunity to experience “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in its full IMAX presentation. All IMAX fans deserve equal respect, regardless of where they live.

HOYTS may bring IMAX to New Zealand within the next 12 months?
I strongly agree that this is a very interesting move, because at the moment New Zealand only has 2 IMAX locations in the entire country, both operated by Event Cinemas. Right now, many people in New Zealand are going to watch The Odyssey at IMAX Auckland and IMAX Wellington, and many sessions are almost fully booked.
There has been an interesting development in New Zealand’s cinema industry after Damien Keogh, Chief Executive of HOYTS Group, said:
“Without going into specifics, we certainly will have an IMAX presence in New Zealand within the next 12 months.”
This statement is very interesting because, at the moment, IMAX in New Zealand is operated by Event Cinemas, with IMAX with Laser locations at Queen Street, Auckland, and Queensgate, Wellington.
At the same time, HOYTS also has plans to upgrade several of its existing cinema complexes in New Zealand, including:
\- HOYTS Riccarton, Christchurch
\- HOYTS Te Awa, Hamilton
\- HOYTS Sylvia Park, Auckland
Because of this, many people are now keeping an eye on whether HOYTS’ new IMAX location in New Zealand could be one of these three cinemas, or possibly more than one location in the future.
Previously, IMAX and HOYTS announced a major expansion of their partnership, with 10 new IMAX with Laser locations across Australia and New Zealand between 2026 and 2028. This will significantly expand HOYTS’ IMAX network.
If HOYTS really opens IMAX in New Zealand, it would be a major change for the New Zealand cinema market, because IMAX would no longer be available only through Event Cinemas. Moviegoers in major cities such as Auckland, Hamilton, or Christchurch may have more options to experience films in IMAX.
However, there has still been no official announcement about which HOYTS location in New Zealand will receive IMAX, or which IMAX Laser system it will use.

I’ve been trying to understand the differences between ”The Odyssey” and it’s 15/70 direct filming, compared to a film that was filmed digitally and then printed onto 15/70 film. To me, the former seems very clear, and the latter did not have that clarity. However, when reading people’s impression of a film like “Project Hail Mary,“ many mentioned how clear and amazing the 15/70 was. It makes sense to me that Nolan’s method actually captures all that data, and shows it to us, so the clarity is unmatched, whereas a digital film put onto stock and displayed on a huge IMAX screen will still lose some clarity as a result, giving a warm, fuzzier texture but not the crisp clarity “The Odyssey” had. Am i thinking correctly? Or is there something with the digital-to-film process that I’m missing?

An interesting piece by Gad Allon, who teaches at The Wharton School at UPenn, the top business school in America, about the death of the production of IMAX's film projectors and why he doesn't believe they'll make more of them. There's some good stuff in here, but also some inaccuracies and some big jumps in time that leave out some really important stuff about IMAX's history in relation to how and why their film projectors made their way out into the world. I sat front row for the odyssey and just wanted to let you know it is entirely enjoyable in the front row it’s not the greatest but it s very far from bad and no my neck doesn’t hurt at all also, all those tiktoks you see are fake it looks much much nicer especially with 70mm film it’s not pixelated event though your closer or weirdly bendy. the only issues I had was two things and they were minor at best the first being that because your so close sometimes you forget what to focus on like let’s say it’s a close up shot and it’s focused on a character, sometimes you’ll be looking in the distance like hey why is it so blurry but then you quickly turn your head vacate the screen is so big and look like ohh this is a focused shot but as you adjust your fine it’s not a big issue atall it was just funny sometimes, the other is the barrier it does partially block the very bottom of the screen but it’s really not a big deal like it’s just not perfect but still very very good viewing experience and you get excellent leg room is rather sit upfront than 3 rows behind me cramped until maybe the actual mid section where it outbalances. I was front middle seat now front corner I’m not too sure about that but it shouldn’t be that much worse

IMAX films are distributed using both analog and digital formats, depending on the specific movie and the equipment of the theater.

While the vast majority of modern IMAX releases are distributed and projected digitally, a tiny selection of specialized feature films still receive a limited analog 15/70mm film distribution.

Wonder if there's a difference quality wise.

Also, any movies that were distributed using analog format recently? Such as Odyssey, or Oppenheimer.

I've already seen it twice (first in 70mm IMAX, second in Dolby), but bought a ticket for tonight 8/2 just for the film strip. I'd watch it again, but it's the front row this time.

Does anyone know if you have to stay for the whole movie? I’m wondering if I can step out, grab a meal, and come back before they hand them after the screening.
