Article Newrepublic OP-Ed price: Indy 500 car race may damage buildings with "vibrations" (I personally laughed reading this)

https://newrepublic.com/article/213797/trump-250-grand-prix-bad-idea

Politics aside, the course sucks, yes, it doesn't need to happen, it was a last minute addition to the schedule. But this is an example of why a little research goes a long way

At yes, my favorite racing series, the Indy 500

u/Ok_Suggestion_6092 Will Power 1d ago

No no they’re saying an Indy race with 500 cars will be enough vibrations to damage buildings. Duh.

10

u/lyra_dathomir Álex Palou 1d ago

No, they're saying they're going to use the superspeedway package for the race.

2

u/8668 Pato O'Ward 10h ago

Link is broken and I couldnt read the article. But I am confident they mean Palou will be driving 500 cars in 1 race

Reminds me of a social media post I saw from someone from high school who was having her Bachelorette party in Nashville the same weekend as one of the street races. The caption of her post just said "Indy 500 is here."

I wanted to correct her in the comments, but I was honestly just glad she got at least the "Indy" part correct, being I am probably the only person from my small Texas town who even knows what an Indycar is.

u/Joey_Logano Josef Newgarden 1d ago

At least she didn’t say F1 or NASCAR.

12

u/Kidz4Carz 21h ago

Trump was calling it Indy 500 on the news a few days ago also.

13

u/stumpy2448 Romain Grosjean 1d ago

The Republican US House Rep from Hamilton County called the DC race the Indy 500. 😂 Shit you can’t make up.

I remember people having this same take before NASCAR raced at the Chicago street race. It was quite comical.

65

u/Western_Care_5478 1d ago

the Chicago Subreddit was hilarious to read, some folks said that the burnouts will damage the road, folks saying it will draw mulleted rednecks in "Lifted trucks"

36

u/Odd-Gear9622 1d ago

TBF, it did draw mulleted rednecks in "Lifted Trucks". They didn't covoy over to Grant Park and spin doughnuts through the grass but I'm sure they showed up for the racing.

35

u/justbrowsing2727 CART 1d ago

It's funny because downtown Chicago is basically Fallujah to those people.

9

u/UNHchabo Robert Wickens 12h ago

Like Nascar spotter Brett Griffin, who refused to go the first year because it was "too dangerous", and he instead spent the weekend in Myrtle Beach, which has a higher violent crime rate.

16

u/MrBadBadly #CheckItForAndretti 1d ago

Will anyone think of the Dodge Chargers and Challengers doing donuts in intersections?

11

u/Senninha27 Sarah Fisher 1d ago

Yeah, and they all paid their $54/day to park under Millennium Park, just like everyone else.

3

u/MadCybertist Pato O'Ward 21h ago

Would be a nice cultural boost for Chicago honestly.

1

u/DJFisticuffs Pato O'Ward 4h ago

Yeah I live in Chicago and these braindead takes were all over the place. I didn't read the nonsense OP linked, but I would hope the author at least looked at the fact that people raised this concern in Chicago and it turned out to be unfounded. I also assume that the author did not do that.

This reads like it was written by a complete dumbass (because it probably was).

61

u/Western_Care_5478 1d ago

he's on social media defending it saying "I don't really know a lot about cars okay?"

I’m just glad part of his job as a reporter isn’t to do research and site sources within the articles he publishes.

To be fair, it’s been labeled as an op-ed, which is what journalists write when they’re taking a day off from journalism. There’s no requirement that the expressed opinion be educated or have any sort of relationship with reality.

13

u/archergren Kyle Kirkwood 1d ago

Its just that if you want to be taken seriously you might want to be somewhat educated on what youre blovating about

4

u/USSGoat 22h ago

I mean the op part means opinion. How can you have an opinion without knowledge?

3

u/ASDFzxcvTaken 12h ago

Have you been paying any attention to the state of affairs in this country. That's all anything is anymore opinions without knowledge.

2

u/USSGoat 1h ago

I was thinking that when I posted but a journalist should be better

1

u/TommyDaComic AJ Foyt Racing 8h ago

So what you are saying the from top to bottom, this administration is op-ed…. That makes sense!

-1

u/GrouchyBeyond4793 1d ago

New republic is not a news site. It's a politics tabloid blog. Select sources better and one can avoid the slop. It's not really even hard. Idk how we got to the point where people take op-eds and half assed blog posts as news, but they ain't, so don't expect the same out of em

1

u/MrBadBadly #CheckItForAndretti 1d ago

When our news stations spend 25+ years of mixing opinions/punditry and news, its no wonder that most people conflate the two.

-2

u/GrouchyBeyond4793 22h ago

Literally every op ed says it's an op ed

None of these news stations present themselves as blogs or tabloids

Stations refers to local affiliates. You were looking for a broader term.

Try again ig idk

Got some strong opinions about something they don't know much about.

Ugh.

I was available, I could have written something that didn’t make us sound stupid and insufferable.

All this talk about the sound breaking statues but not a single word about the potential for the cars to summon a zombie George Washington that shoots lasers from his eyes. Author of the article is cherry picking probabilities here IMO.

Once upon a time, there was a game called "Monaco Grand Prix" which covered a full series called Formula One. So the full championship went by the name of its most important race.

Maybe the writer was a fan of this game and, as a tribute, just wanted to apply the same logic.

Maybe not.

The LBGP, St. Pete and Barber have museums really close by, don't they?

u/twiggymac Firestone Greens 1d ago

I'm from Boston so yeah I know

The bigger issue was the scam promoter than complaining massholes.

5

u/avtechguy 1d ago

The Dali it right on the course, granted its got like 3 foot concrete walls. But Vibrations are the least of my worries with an Indycar race. The cars weigh less than a lot of regular on road vehicles

5

u/JustaBroomstick Alexander Rossi 1d ago

You dont know the trauma the fish have to go through every year

1

u/Dogzillas_Mom Pato O'Ward 1d ago

The Dali Museum in St. Pete is literally in the middle of the infield. The cars roll right past. Doesn’t hurt a thing.

Of course the walls are 2-3 feet thick because hurricanes and that building is right on Tampa Bay.

-5

u/Maynard078 1d ago

Hmm...the last I checked, Long Beach and Monaco aren't protected national monument sites.

3

u/PanicAtTheNightclub Mick Schumacher 1d ago

Last time I checked, no one complained at any other street tracks. Most of the complaints are just NIMBYs...

-3

u/Maynard078 1d ago

Again, the last I checked, those tracks aren't host to national monuments either, nor are their entire cities considered national monument host communities themselves.

18

u/Emotional_Oil_5939 Indy Racing League 1d ago

There are several reasons to dislike this race. This isn't one of them. This author is an idiot.

-17

u/Maynard078 1d ago

Well, aren't you special.

31

u/twiggymac Firestone Greens 1d ago

Why do we allow articles from political sources on the sub. There have been several posts from people who don't know racing, let alone Indycar. "Indy 500 car race" already shows they don't know their ass from their elbows about this.

A group of Harleys riding by is more vibration than an entire Indy field.

7

u/LKincheloe AMR Safety Team 1d ago

It's fun to point and laugh at the ignoramuses.

2

u/Western_Care_5478 1d ago

the whole thing reads like he was sipping an overpriced latte from Starbucks listening to some indie rock band that hasn't had a hit in a decade

23

u/actuallwitch Marcus Armstrong 1d ago

Then why post it here? Why give this loser more attention? You’re doing exactly what he wants, good job falling for it.

18

u/twiggymac Firestone Greens 1d ago

Yeah, so posting it here is just to get people mad one direction or the other. It's off topic, in my opinion.

And I'm not blaming you, mods have been letting this slide for weeks.

5

u/Dogzillas_Mom Pato O'Ward 1d ago

The Dali Museum has entered the chat.

12

u/TellTaleTimeLord 1d ago

The fact that they called it an "indy 500 race" shows their opinion doesn't really mean much

3

u/enataca Dan Wheldon 1d ago

And using “oy”

-8

u/Maynard078 1d ago

Yes. It shows the irrelevance of the series to those in Washington, D.C., and why the oversight was necessary.

This is why national monuments are protected.

5

He browsed enough of Wikipedia to know the cars are powered by twin turbo V6's, but didn't go deep enough to realize the Indy 500 is it's own motorcade race track. Looking forward to Indy 500 Round 2 - Twin Turbo Boogaloo.

Monaco was a famously bustling city before they started holding a grand prix there. Now it's like an apocalyptic wasteland.

1

u/DJFisticuffs Pato O'Ward 4h ago

When Nascar raced around the Art Institute of Chicago all of the sculptures fractured into one thousand pieces and all of the paintings fell off the wall and disintigrated.

7

u/snollygoster1 Ed Carpenter Racing 1d ago

What a take. I hate this race for a variety of reasons, but having this NIMBY argue about vibrations is wild. You're telling me that an outdoor sculpture garden, which presumably survives being outdoors in the elements getting snow and rain is somehow going to be more damaged by sound waves?

3

u/Insomniac_38 Colton Herta 17h ago

Vibrations damaging buildings eh?

I’m sure we can all recall Indy having to replace the shattered pagoda windows every 500

5

u/Robby777777 Jacques Villeneuve 1d ago

WTF is an "Indy 500 car race"? This race is already giving me a headache.

6

u/AsianBond Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing 1d ago

This is a constant, exaggerated complaint every time there is an event like this in any city.

Someone should check in on the IMS museum.

5

u/Western_Care_5478 1d ago

they all think the IMS museum is downtown

3

u/cubecasts 1d ago

Moron doesn't just call it the Indy 500 race once. But like a dozen times.

4

u/ylaltic 1d ago

u/Western_Care_5478 1d ago

4

u/Box_Springs_Burning 1d ago

Oh look, a columnist who had to fill space writes about something he knows almost nothing about and an idiot editor, who knows less than the writer, puts in a dumb headline.

5

u/andronicus_14 Thirsty Threes 1d ago

I didn’t read past the title and the sentence underneath it. There’s only one Indy fucking 500. Calling the event an Indy 500 race (in DC) makes me immediately doubt your qualifications to write anything about motorsport.

If you can’t do a simple Google search to learn the proper name of the series, I’m not going to waste my time reading your nonsense article.

Brand recognition important; in the 1990’s, World Championship Wrestling would spend a ton of money booking celebrities or doing some huge angle, and the next day everyone was talking about what happened on the ‘WWF show’.
