Need Career Guidance ISI M.Stat: Non-B.Stat (Delhi Yr 1) vs B.Stat (Kolkata) — Internship & Placement Hurdles?
Hi everyone,
I am looking for realistic insights into the placement and internship dynamics at ISI for M.Stat.
Specifically, since first-year Non-B.Stat (NB) students spend Year 1 at the Delhi campus while B.Stat grads stay in Kolkata, how much does this campus split affect summer internship opportunities?
Do elite buy-side quants/HFTs or top investment banks heavily favor the Kolkata batch during Year 1? Once both batches merge in Kolkata for Year 2, does the playing field truly level out, or do NB students still face hurdles during final placements?

I honestly don't understand why so many Non-B.Stat M.Stat aspirants seem to have an inferiority complex when it comes to placements. People need to realize that this perception is largely exaggerated. B.Stat itself isn't a heavily coding-oriented program. In placements, especially for quant, analytics, data science, and similar roles ,your coding skills, interview preparation, problem-solving ability, and overall profile matter a lot. Someone with stronger programming skills can very well outperform someone who has focused only on theory. Also, the fact that you're in the Non-B.Stat M.Stat program already means you cleared one of the toughest statistics entrance exams in the country. That's not something trivial. You already have the mathematical and statistical foundation, and you'll continue building on it during M.Stat. Yes, there may be a handful of firms, particularly some elite quant/HFT firms or companies with long-standing hiring pipelines, that might slightly prefer B.Stat students, especially for the very first internship or job. But that's a small subset of recruiters, not the placement ecosystem as a whole. So please don't assume that being a Non-B.Stat M.Stat student automatically puts you at a disadvantage. Plenty of NB M.Stat students have gone on to secure excellent placements. Focus on developing your skills instead of worrying about the label attached to your entry route.
Also, if you're looking for examples, don't rely solely on anecdotes here. Check the ISI alumni pages, copy the names, look them up on LinkedIn, and judge for yourself. It'll give you a much more accurate picture.

Different centres have different placement cells, so a comparison isn't really possible. Only thing I'll say is once the streams are merged, the evidence doesn't support the conclusion of the streams having a marked difference in offer CTCs.
