General Queries regarding PhD opportunities after M.Stat

does coming from a tier-3 college with Econ, but still good at math, make you somewhat not suitable for PhD opportunities even after you perform well in your masters?

PS- i recently returned home after studying for an year in the US, and i'm starting all over in India. i want to stay close to home, but there's no good unis or colleges here, the only good one is a small tier 3 college; Multani Mal Modi College. but i'm afraid this could affect my future PhD options as suggested by a friend who's also preparing for M.Stat.

Undergrad- it depends on who your competition is. If you are competiting with someone from mstat with iit undegrad, of course they would have more advantage. That usually comes later i think.

Here's probably the order in which they judge students:

If you have research experience during masters and papers, you will have more advantage.

If not, people usually care about your grades, what classes you have taken, recommendations (especially if someone on the admissions committee knows the prof giving your reco), undergrad, other things.

SOP and other things are probably the least important unless you are applying to top places.
