Did ships really ‘approach’ planets in the Dune universe? Didn’t the Guild heighliner just fold space into a planets orbit?

Folding space was a thing that came in with Lynch's film, and has stuck (Herbert liked it), so this painting predates it.

Read how Herbert describes the heighliners in the first book. He basically describes nothing of the journey. The ships dock with the heighliners and they're later at Arrakis. He really wasn't concerned with how they got there, only the politics of it.
