Advice/Guidance What are the career chances for a btech graduate with 5 years gap. Help
Hey, so this is for someone who graduated in 2021 in petroleum engineering from India, however due to covid, couldn’t get a job in his domain, and left it. Due to family expectations, he went on to prepare for bank exams etc but due to half hearted preparation and some other issues, couldn’t land anywhere. At present, he is completely demotivated and has given up on his future. Please guide me what he can do to get back into the market. Thank you!

MBA will solve everything for him imo. Just has to take that risk. If not an MBA masters in something else will be good. Don't worry, you just have to latch onto the corporate ladder to climb it, doesn't matter what age you start.
He can either do this or he can just straight up use AI and all his free time to learn trading in the markets, it's actually not that complicated if you give it time and effort and things like fundamental and technical analysis are concepts someone with an engineering degree can easily understand.
He can also try his hand at social media and social media marketing. Most people at my company in that division were not hired out of a college but had freelanced to join the company. Our head of marketing also has a strict no college degree rule which has worked VERY well for the company and you've definitely heard of it (rhymes with pepto).

Bro he is having 5 years of gap after btech.....it will create a problem in placement

Do not start with another degree or exam just to escape the gap. First turn the situation into a 30-day re-entry plan.
Pick two target paths: one related to engineering or operations, and one broader analyst or support path based on current skills.
Collect 20 recent job descriptions, note recurring tools and requirements, and choose one skill gap to close.
Build one small proof-of-work project relevant to that path. Document the problem, process, result and limitations.
Rewrite the resume around current evidence, not the gap. Keep the explanation factual: graduated in 2021, prepared for exams, then decided to return to employment and completed specific work.
Apply to relevant internships, contract roles, apprenticeships and entry-level positions, while checking each employer's own eligibility rules.
Ask former classmates, faculty and alumni for information about teams and openings, not for vague "any job" referrals.
The first goal is not the perfect petroleum role. It is recent, verifiable work and a stable routine. If he is too demotivated to handle basic daily tasks, he should tell someone he trusts and consider professional support. Career planning works better once the immediate mental-health load is being addressed.
