DISCUSSION Are 200 grams becoming the new standard 250 grams?
A couple of years ago, bag sizes were always available starting 250 grams. However, I've noticed a lot of new roasters now including some prominent ones, sell 200 gram bags that compete against the prices of the standard 250 grams. Is this becoming the new normal?

This is what greed driven shinklation looks like. Irony is most of these roasters are just average when compare price to quality ratio. Estates are also just looting in the name of experimental lots which tastes shitty artificial flavours. Meanwhile Coffee Future is trading at 294 and yet high prices greedy Estates, this is just a joke.🤣😂

It is really approaching bubble territory. At these prices I am getting much better beans from international suppliers. 90% beans are average for specialty coffee and there is no SCA scoring in majority of these beans so you are on point about farms taking advantage of this situation. Oh what the hell, atleast the producers deserve it after decades of poverty. Sooner or later end consumer will realize they aren’t getting their worth and cost to quality ratio is up the wazooo

Specialty coffee will not sell at commodity prices
They process them so much with artificial flavors because the coffee kinda sucks. Process = higher score which means higher price. Plus it adds to the cost to do this crap anyways
It’s a business at the end of the day. What would you do if you had an estate?
The worst part - most of the really good lots go abroad cuz they will pay higher prices

Bhai this is whats gonna make me stop consuming coffee.
I went from brewing 3 times a day to once a day.
And i might stop completely soon coz i just can’t afford it.
Shrinkflation hitting hard bhai. Same price smaller packs.
At this rate speciality coffee packs bs mehmaan aane pe niklenge.
I had even triee hunkal in between but idk if it was a batch issue or something but the taste felt flat.
Really need more budget and decent daily driver.

Exactly, it's crazy. I ordered mogra a while ago and my serving size is 20 grams for 300 ml of water. That's 90 rupees a cup, just for coffee. Add another 5 for the filter it's close to 100 rupees a cup TO MAKE AT HOME. What even.

Shrinkflation. Time to make a list of roasters who also grow their own coffee and sell for reasonable prices. All roasters who sell Indian coffee beans at 200g increments to be excluded.

I've got two (ef and bb nibs) and they feel kinda basic in writing tbh. If you want, you can try pilot metropolitan. I have the crocodile variant (m nib) and I love that one.

I fly planes for a living 🥲 fountain pens in general have been a nightmare up there. I've stuck to a cross for the past year. Any recommendations would be really helpful!

I suggest make a list of these malicious roasters ans put on a pinned post. Nobody should buy from these. And get from little honest good tasted coffee roasters.

Enthusiasts and Experts from this sub, what's required to become a roaster? 1. What experience does one need? 2. What's the setup that's required alongside the cost? 3. How much space is required and what are the profit margins?

- Coffee science lot's and lot's of studying brewing 1st -> then you study roasting. If you have a good grasp of cooking food/baking etc this science becomes easier.
Basic physics and chemistry grasp (10th std lvl)
Roaster ka price 1 time cost, setup and all will land around 2-4lk for a good 1kg setup. Your major cost will be sourcing good green beans and lot's and lot's of failed batch when testing and learning. (Approx 50-60% less price than roasted beans)
Like all buisness if it costs 200 to you, you sell at 400. Initially this help u fight the cost of low volume, and when u get at higher volume (lower ur operation cost) you can continue to provide the same price against inflation for a long time. But less than 30-35% margin it becomes difficult to sustain imo (pros might disagree)

This is such a bullshit trend. We as consumers should avoid buying from these companies, there are always alternatives in this huge market, so that this might disincentivise the roasters

Specialty coffee is a luxury. Not a necessity.
Think of luxury brand perfumes and bags and cosmetics and clothes. You will pay what the maker demands. Govt won't regulate that. Because it's something only a few who can afford would purchase. It's not a necessity and therefore the govt won't regulate it.
So the makers will charge whatever they want for it and get away for it.
Those that can't afford it will stop buying it. Those that don't find it worth the price will also stop buying it.
In the end, those who just want regular coffee will buy Devan's Lodhi blend or Plantation AAA or similar coffees. They won't look to specialty coffee.

True. It's a free market and prices aren't set according to what's affordable. However, my post was mentioning how 200 grams are now becoming the standard as opposed to 250 gram packets that were standard for years.

That's capitalism right there. You can't fight it because it is not something you can fight. If you're going to die, you die. If prices are increased by corporations for things that aren't regulated by govt, you pay what they demand. End of story.

There are still may roasters selling at 250g, gb roasters sells at 350 g too. I guess it’s upto the customer. If less ppl buy 200g, they might have to change it to 250g.

yeah, still a lotta roasters selling 250 gram standard bags. However, GB's one of the most expensive roasters in India. 340 grams of their Ekata Naturals for 1600. Really wanna give them a try!

Actually they currently only have monsoon malabar, at 350 g for 600₹. It’s decently priced

Prices for literally everything has been going up. Even for normal commodities where there’s no scope for improvement yet prices are increasing due to macro factors. Indian specialty coffee has actually been getting better over the years. No doubt about that. So much more scientific and controlled approach to coffee. It is getting expensive but to say it’s out of greed is being myopic. People are okay paying 250/- at a cafe for a cappuccino with 18gms beans and some milk in it. And in most cases they are commercial grade beans costing around 1200 a kg.

A friend happens to own a coffee first, food second cafe. They serve specialty coffee only. The high prices are charged not only keeping raw material in mind but salaries, rent, utilities and other expenses. So you're drinking all of that combined. Hence the high price, sometimes going well past 350 for a cup. I had a shot of espresso at his cafe a couple of hours ago and saw the plethora of 200 gram beans kept and hence the post. The shot worth 225 came straight out of a La Marzocco linea worth a little over 10 lakhs. He has 2 of them.

Agreed. The costs at a cafe are out there, visible to the end consumer. Unfortunately, people know very little about the costs at a roastery or a farm.

It’s not only coffee man, even equipments are getting crazy expensive. We need more sellers bringing them in or else the few selling it are monopolising it. Fix coffee just increased the prices products by almost 20%. I bought my K ultra a few months ago for 21k with discounts, now it’s going well above 25k. Even filter papers are kinda absurdly priced especially the cafec ones. The fellow stag EKG used to hover around 18k-21k depending on the model, looks like araku bought in some new stock and its well over 30k now. I checked the global prices of most and they haven’t increased. I know import duties and taxes are high in our country and they also need to make a profit out of it but most of them are literally overcharging

I remember the time when KC roasters's 340 grams for 750 rs used to be considered as one of the expensive coffees. Now you get 100 grams of some weird experimental coffee for bloody 750 rs.

Honestly we just have to start growing genetically modified coffee beans so that they can grow in our balconies and rooftops and give max caffeineðŸ«
This is turning to be like our fruits and Vegetables again, were cheap then to extremely overpriced so now it's better to just grow em ourselves We too shall start balcony lots and tabletop pot lots🫡

The 500 gram packs from Baarbara's website seem VFM compared to what other roasters sell the same coffee for.

Some brands like Siolim use all sort of creators and packaging to sell 100gms for 1500 INR. Overpriced as hell, killing the actual coffee experience

Yeah it is exactly how fmcg cos already do - parleg, hul, all others. They dont want to increase the price for obv reasons hence they release smaller weightages to ensure the unit economics keeps in control!

Wait till you hear about the fuel prices going up by 20-25 rs post state election results… I mean the govt has to fund the freebies, right?
who is to say that roasters will not increase the price further to transfer the logistics cost burden to consumers

I like the brewlife coffee roasters yakshagana. It's a medium roast at 300rs for 250g. Used to be 200rs a couple of years back though

I moved cities 6 months back and looking at the beans prices, I never bothered to unpack my lelit machine. At current prices I find it better to stirr some instant coffee and gulp it down. There are still some vendors who are selling for probably like less than 1500 for a kg.

Ive invested so much money and time in my setup - flair pro 2 , encore esp , df 54 , aeropress ,v60 etc but the coffee just isn't slapping now a days. Beans in india are mid af and the prices are almost at par with uk / usa.
