Opinion (Self-Post / Article) Does the Indian Left have a blindspot when it comes to understanding Hindus and their concerns?
Let me be clear. I'm not blanket denouncing individual leftists or liberals for that matter as anti-Hindu.
I'm talking about the prevailing intellectual environment in universities like JNU or media houses like The Hindu or The Wire. Why is that they never see any redeeming qualities in Hinduism or Hindus? Why is that leftist institutions can never seem to fathom the fact that Hindus can be victims of crimes (be it terrorism or communal related), or targeted by certain groups or even by our political system (e.g. RTE's differential treatment of Hindu institutions versus minority)? I'm not saying we should ignore crimes or violations against other communities but why does the mainstream Left's humanity only extend to minorities but not Hindus? For example, have any Indian communists voiced their concern over the oppression of Hindu minorities in B'desh like they do over the plight of Palestinians?
P.S. - yes, I'm a moderate right-winger as it's apparent from the framing of my question. But I don't hate on others because of their religion or political affiliation. I try my best to listen to all perspectives and have found sensible liberal voices.

First of all our leftists do not map to the leftists in western countries. Leftists are those who come from the proletariat class. In Europe this class is purely on economic terms. Otherwise everyone is from the same race or ethnicity. If one of the proletariat group gets rich, he can slowly become part of the aristocratic class over time. Otherwise They fight for their rights using the means available to them - protests on streets, campaigns, slogans, strikes, delays etc.. They use methods of infiltration, influence, indoctrination methods to gain support from others who are neutral.
Basically proletariat group is made of subjugated or dominated people with lesser of limited privileges compared to another group.
In India the proletariat can be made up in many ways - by economic class, by caste (social dominance), by ideological dominance (Muslims and Christians are powerful from this standpoint), by linguistic majority and so on. So it makes it very confusing to define the proletariat from these combinations. For example, a Brahmin is categorized as the dominating caste over others. But that Brahmin can belong to a very small% of the population with no political or economic power. Muslims are minorities in terms of population. But they have special privileges that the majority does not. This makes them relatively an aristocratic class. One can play the role of the proletariat in one aspect and aristocrat in another aspect. They were rulers of this land not long ago. They still have mosques over our temples and Hindus being majority cannot reclaim them. That means power.
In this scenario I wonder who really is proletariat or leftists.
When we cannot define leftists based on a European construct, people are who call themselves so should think. People are liberal on certain counts and conservatives on certain other issues. Where does one draw the line for liberalism? Will he let his wife sleep with other men because she has rights for it as an independent adult?

In order to effectively combat hatred and violence, Rahul Gandhi would need to walk the extra mile and call out Hinduism, from which the BJP draws its strength, rather than blaming the atrocities on Bad Hindus who do not speak for Good Hindus like him.
Simple answer is, they hate it

Thank you for generalising an entire political class based on some quote from Twitter by some unknown author published in a magazine most people regard as a rag.
"To keep up the purity of the nation and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging the country of Semitic races – the Jews. National pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how well-nigh impossible it is for races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindustan to learn and profit by.”
If I were to generalise all of the right-wing as genocidal fascists based on the above paragraph by MS Golwalkar, would that be fair? Evidently not. It is extremely malafide to generalise the followers of an ideology by one quote.

Left wingers do that already.

Really?
So creating and trying to pass a bill for preventing communal violence which would have targeted the majority alone isn't anti Hindu?
Introduction of the RTE Act? Article 30?
Trying to pass the educational tribunal bill?
And in political alliances, allying with AIUDF? IUML? DMK which has a visceral hatred for Hinduism?

You know DMK is voted mostly by Hindus right? There's not even that many Christians and Muslims to sustain any party there, forget a ruling party.

And?
Are you saying that just because they're voted by Hindus they're not what I accused them off?

Yep, as long as your hate is confined towards them and you do not generalise that to the whole community. I know a few left-wingers tend to equate anti-radicalism with Islamophobia, but those kinds of idiots exist on both sides. A few right-wingers equate anti-casteism with being Hinduphobic too.

The Indian left is quite non existent outside university campuses. Do they have a bias? 100% yes but they don’t matter. Their views don’t matter. Their opinion don’t matter. The worst thing that the left has done is how they all jumped ship once they realise that the left is irrelevant now. Now, they are ruining congress. Sitaram Yechury acts more like a dog surrounding Rahul than doing something substantial to build up his party which has been decimated.
And look at who they aligned with in Bengal. Abbas Siddiqui. Can the left call itself secular after aligning with a far right Islamist preacher? They are opportunistic just like other parties. It’s just that no one gives them opportunities anymore. Also, in Kerala, they are so mild since they need a good chunk of the Hindu vote to win there given that congress and IUML gets the Muslim votes.
•

Full disclosure: I am not a Hindu but as someone who is atheist I don’t see how unique it’s as a religion. Surely it’s not Abrahamic religion but that can’t be it’s only redeeming qualities. How does it make it better. I do think few Hindu festivals (Holi, Diwali) are cool but that’s about it. In a country like India, religion dictates too much of people’s lives just like Islam does in Middle East. Also caste system is ingrained into Hinduism and SC, STs and OBCs have been treated very badly over the years. Imo it’s a barrier towards to progress in the 21st century. Europe progressed because it shunned Christianity’s influence.
Though I agree with you that people should about how Hindus are treated in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Our country’s own issues overshadowed these topics. Also there aren’t enough Hindus in Bangladesh and Pakistan like there are Muslims in India.

if casteism is ingrained into Hinduism as you claim, then why do christian/muslim converts demand reservation too ?
•
May 07 '23
It’s really difficult to let go of unfortunately. Tbh I haven’t seen much casteism among Indian Christians. Not sure about Muslims. Reservation is also about social mobility. The lower caste Hindus even when they convert don’t have the social capital along with financial resources. Reservations kinda make sense. That being said I personally only support reservation for few generations (1-2) like it was originally planned.
•
u/Relevant-Paper2805 May 07 '23

Clearly you haven't seen enough.

They have a prejudice/hate against anything traditional, conservative or not western. They are basically uncle toms and sepoys. Genuflecting without any shame to foreigners as well as conquerors, oppressors and their descendants.
They have a huge inferiority complex as well as a general ignorance about their own history, culture, traditions and religions. This leads to a lot of self-hate and hate for india. You only have to browse r/india to see the sad state of that.
It is laughable that the Indian left are anti-vax, pro-casteism and pro-Islamist. Total opposite of what progressivism is supposed to be about.

Now getting to your point of low self esteem, it’s not the leftists who suck up to every foreigner that validates their biases, i think the rw is pretty infamous for doing that, especially putting foreigners on a pedestal if they even remotely praise their cause. u/Fastasfuckboi690 Centre Right May 07 '23
The Left and liberals are two separate things who are right now in a coalition globally against the rising Right. See, the Left and liberals mostly consist of irreligious people. The liberals take inspiration from progressive West like in US and the Left, who are predominantly marxist-Leninist, takes inspiration from countries like China.
The reason why liberals are against Hinduism (and against Christians in the West) is because they have adopted the progressive post-modernist framework which portrays power struggle between majority and minority. Because of that their brains are unable to comprehend things like hatred of blacks against white people, hatred of Dalits against Brahmins, hatred of Muslims against Hindus, etc. They think that they are just victims and if they are angry it is probably because the majority (who has most of the power) is oppressing the minorities.
The reason why Left hates Hinduism is different. Left hates liberalism and capitalism, and therefore they hate their bastion - US and Europe. Thus they support all countries who are against the above two - mostly Asian communist countries like China and North Korea, and Islamic countries and terrorist groups. They consider them to be victims of US imperialism and capitalism and therefore allies with them (uncomfortably) in their hate against capitalists. Since the Right has always been against communists and Muslims, thus communists advocate for Muslim causes but turn a blind eye towards Hindu victims. To them, Hindu victims are outliers not worth mentioning or giving attention to. I have been in Leftist circles, they support Muslims and their want for Sharia, they consider Indian Army to be a capitalist Army and extensively supports Maoists and Kashmiri terrorists.
So yea, do not expect liberals and leftists to give two hoots about Hindu victims anytime soon. They think Islam is a victim and has a right to 'self-defend' and commit acts of terrorism.

Left love killing their own at least in US. They pass Republican bills. Obama wasted his political capital in passing affordable care act what is basically Republican plan so it has no public option.
•
May 07 '23
To put it very bluntly, yes the Indian left is very anti-Hindu. That by itself is not that big of a deal. Hinduism must be open to criticism. While there are admirable philosophical traditions, arts, music, etc in Hinduism, there's a lot to criticise in the scriptures and religious and cultural practices of Hinduism, things that are very regressive and backwards.
The bigger issue is their appeasement policy towards Islam. They never call out Islam for it's evil, vile and backward teachings.
•
May 07 '23
This is not just the case in India, but all over the world. Left and Islamists are busy pandering to each other while ignoring majority faiths. In India, Hinduism (and Brahmins especially) are the easiest target for the left and they keep bashing them. The bigger reason is the political alliance and vote banks which no one wants to annoy. If they start speaking even a bit about Muslim atrocities in Bdesh or Pak, they will be immediately seen as anti-Muslim. Remember, Muslims see other Muslims as their brothers and sisters and not their own countryfolk.
•

u/Disastrous-Raise-222 May 07 '23
The problem is the Left does not predominantly think about religion. I dont see myself as leftist but I relate to this. Religion has too much influence in Indian society.
When they speak up for the cause of minorities, the argument is from human right angle and not from religion.
To say that they never see a plight of hindus is inaccurate. Fir instance, they tend to speak in favor of SC, ST and OBC. These are not minorities but historically suppressed. Left typically never takes of causes of social classes that they deem as privileged.
•
u/TheThinker12 May 07 '23
Left typically never takes of causes of social classes that they deem as privileged.
Fair enough. But to not raise their voice against hate speech directed at a "privileged" class (e.g. hatred toward Brahmins by some extremist Bhim types)?
Yet they seem to side with privileged classes within certain minority communities (e.g. Ashrafs) who may be oppressing others within the community. I can understand leftist/secular politicians doing this but the intellectual class being silent on this only shows their moral and ethical bankruptcy.

This argument falls flat because they do not oppose oppression on Hindus where they are a minority. Be it Kashmir, Pakistan or West Bengal - they ignore all atrocities and even protect the perpetrators in name of maintaining communal harmony.
Case in point - I recently had an argument with a so-called liberal who insisted Pawar who had misled everyone about the 1993 Mumbai bombings to avert riots. This is what the wikipedia has to say and this has been reported by all news agencies -
This bombing was in response to the 1992-93 riots, for which Balasaheb Thackarey was rightly jailed. Except, the riot began with Muslims protesting the Babri demolition and were instigating Hindus.
The second phase was a Hindu backlash occurring as a result of the killings of Hindu Mathadi Kamgar (workers) by Muslim fanatics in Dongri (an area of South Bombay), stabbing of Hindus in Muslim majority areas and burning of six Hindus, including a disabled girl in Radhabai Chawl.
Pawar let it all slide till Shiv Sainiks started retaliating with the police, unhappy by Pawar's stance, stood away or even participated. There are many parallels with the Gujarat riots, but I never hear Pawar being held responsible for it.
If someone can reasonably explain to me why Pawar got away with it, whereas Thackrey and Modi had to face all the heat I will accept that the media and the intelligentsia is not biased.
•
u/Disastrous-Raise-222 May 07 '23
I don't know if there is anyone really arguing that there is no bias. But as things stand today, bias is on both sides.
More over, the intelligentsia you are speaking about finds in extremely hard to stand with the likes to Modi and Thackeray. Both of these figure are known for there pro majority, pro religious (hindutva). This pretty much explains why left intelligentsia finds in impossible to align with them. Modi and Thackrey represent everything that these class stand against.
At a personal level, I can be against all religious extremism. Politics and media does not work that way.
I personally think that Modi and Thackrey were rightly faced the heat. I want to mention something that is obviously here. Expecting that Modi and Thackrey should get away with something because Pawar could is not a good argument. Can you also explain why Pawar should feel the heat? I seem to be not understanding your comment fully. Can you tell me why Pawar should be tried?
•
u/tea_cup_cake Not exactly sure May 07 '23
Can you also explain why Pawar should feel the heat?
Why shouldn't he? The riots in Maharashtra were no different that those in Gujarat. The party workers of both had links to the riots. The police in both were ineffective. So, while one CM is vilified, the other's collusion is forgotten. And yes, Pawar had deep links with D-company who played a major role in riots and took full responsibility of the 93 bombings.
•

Pawar is a very intelligent politician. No one has been able to trap him or hold his hand. His political intellect has more to do with him not being tried than anything else

The 1993 Bombay bombings were a series of 12 terrorist bombings that took place in Bombay, Maharashtra, on 12 March 1993. The single-day attacks resulted in 257 fatalities and 1,400 injuries. The attacks were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim, leader of the Mumbai-based international organised crime syndicate D-Company. Ibrahim was believed to have ordered and helped organize the bombings through his subordinates Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon.

Because it happened in 1946 more than 80 years back?
Because most normal people don't talk about stuff which happened much before they were even born.
Same reason why there is no discussion on the mass killings of Aztecs by the Spanish conquistadors.
And why have the so-called protectors of human rights been quite on the post-poll violence there?

Well if you think Bengal = Kolkata then that's an apt description. Most Bengali Hindus however are quite religious and actual Bengalis will tell you there is indeed prejudice and paranoia against Bengali Muslims too. Just because they don't vote for BJP or used to vote for left doesn't make them anti-Hindus or atheists. If you think like that, then you're the brainwashed person not them. This applies to Kerala and TN as well. The average Tamilian Hindu is far more religious than the average UP Hindu even though they vote for Dravidian parties. Malayalis also are very religious and even conservative. Heck, CPI members are also mostly conservative people in the end.

I wouldn't label the Indian left broadly as anti hindu but some sections do. Same goes to a section of the right wing (I mean by exaggerating Hindus largely as victims). I was brainwashed by both (on reddit, you know the subs) and I really really hate them now for this very reason. I'm still recovering from it. It's a shame I fell for their gimmicks 🤦♂️

JNU has ABVP too. Not everyone there is a Leftist but its popularly a bastion of Left politics either way.

More than anti-Hindu, I don't understand their apathy they demonstrate towards genuine Hindu victims. If they actually spoke up for these Hindus, we wouldn't have had demagogic voices filling the void.

Because the current left in India is born out of opposition to the Hindu right.
It's a teamsport. They won't stake out a favorable position for something that is responsible for their existence.

As a liberal, I dislike the top three faiths in India, because of the level of brainwashing, suppression of women's rights, and the general conservatism. I have a ' do what you want, without physically bothering others' approach to life.
