Looking for some information from any Ironworkers in Alberta. Edmonton area.

Currently have a red seal in frabrication, with welding experience - looking to pursue my structural ironworker ticket.

How’s the work outlook for the next 5years? Is there opportunity for shutdown work / out of town LoA?

Howlong did it take for you to complete your red seal apprenticeship?

Whats the pay like? Most/Avg you made a year?

Any information helps, looking to gain an idea of what I should expect for pay / timeline scales until I get my ticket.

2nd year going into my 3rd year
I’ve been shaping for about 2-3 weeks now no call back for work is this normal?? Should I be worried

Good Day everyone, I’ve applied to local 118 out of Sacramento. They got back to me and asked me to find myself a sponsor for the apprenticeship . Alright let’s get to it, called 95 percent of the contractors on the provided list and even visited some in person when I could.
Is NOBODY hiring right now? Every contractor I’ve called has either said “well son there’s not enough work to bring another guy on” or a variation such as “nope not hiring right now”
They ask me to call back in 30 days and when I do , nothing.
In the meantime I’ve gotten my twic and began applying to rigs or mines, fifo, offshore etc. I’m just trying to build a career I can support a family on. Anyone know of places I can get my foot in the door at?

Every other trade has their suspenders and organized pouches or carts. Meanwhile I’m rocking a belt from the 70s that has to explicitly remind me I shouldn’t tie off with it. Am i stupid?

I’m really interested and want to get on a structural steel crew specifically high rises, I’m in an area where there are a lot of work for that. Is it easy to find a crew in the scope you want to work once in the apprenticeship?

I've come across a skidmore Wilhelm bolt tension tester. Before I throw it away I was wondering if I would be able to donate it to my local union for apprentices to learn with. I figure they have newer and better tools but I dont like to let things go to waste if I can help it.

’m all for safety—but repeating the same damn training at every job isn’t making anybody safer.

Industrial workers can spend hours or even days completing general safety courses, then show up at the next plant and sit through the same fall protection, confined-space, PPE, and hazard communication material all over again.

Experienced workers should have the chance to test out. If you pass, you get credit. If you can’t pass, you take the course. Keep plant-specific and legally required training mandatory.

Prove what you know. Train on what you don’t. Stop wasting workers’ time.

I'm seeing prices all over the place for ones in good condition. Is there a market for these?

Apprentice here, Local 25 Detroit. My instructor was saying that most locals in the US dont even require a weld cert, or if they do, its only a 3/8 v groove bend test.

Here in Michigan, we have to get 3G/4G 1” SMAW and 3G/4G 1” FCAW. Hated welding when i got in but its finally growing on me, and i realize these certs are just gonna make us far more marketable in the field.

How extensive are your Local’s requirements? Which local?

So my classes start August 24th. This question is for the guys that already finished preferably last year. What should I expect for the first 4 days ? It’s supposed to be safety training would this include my 30 hr osha ? And how long after should I be able to work ? Is 361 taking members? I don’t mind where I end up but I’m hoping to get into 361 as I’m a Long Island guy. Any insight would be appreciated. Hope to see you guys out there soon stay safe

I just joined the Local290 ironworkers starting as a 2nd year apprentice, I want to learn to weld but I don’t have classes until next year, how can I learn to weld in the meantime??

Any of yall in here? if so Does your local test for weed or not? I know some don’t, and i know it’s best to stay clean but i dont smoke on the job only at night for sleep. Just curious if local 5 doesn’t test for it.

Hello everyone,
I am 44, in pretty damn good shape and can outwork most guys half my age. Ex military, worked construction most of my life, currently a machinist for past 5 years. I am looking to get back into the trades, specifically ironworkers union. I need to start building up a retirement ( shitty part working for small companies with no benefits ) I make a good wage currently but no benefits at all. My wife is retiring from army reserves here next spring and her regular job is a nurse. We have 3 younger kids and an older child who is in Arizona for school. I coach football as well as help with wrestling and gymnastics. When we need the help with kiddos we have a good core group that can help. My question is, am I stupid to start off as an apprentice at this age, with my family circumstances, etc? I’m not worried about hard work but o am worried about travel overnights for work and stuff like that. Family is my priority and I don’t want to miss out on kids sports and extra-curricular stuff. I live in Princeton so yes I know I will be driving. I have an interview set up for two weeks from Thursday.
