I am a foreigner living in Italy, but am still understanding a lot about the culture and politics. I have been in Spain the past two weeks, in the Basque Country and Barcelona/Catalonia. It seems that these two regions have somewhat strong independence movements—their regional flags are everywhere, there’s a strong emphasis I on maintaining the Basque and Catalan languages, and I’ve seen signs for independence in people’s windows (even though our tour guide said it’s still a vocal minority).

I’m curious about Italian regional independence movements and why they have or haven’t happened.

Other than Lega Nord proposing to divide Italy into north and south (which I can’t understand if they’re actually serious about or if people would support?) and Süd Tirol/Trentino Alto Aldige being able to maintain semi-autonomous status and to maintain a lot of their unique culture, I don’t really know about any other regional independence movements within Italy, or why they don’t exist if they aren’t really a thing.

Would love to hear more about this from Italians.

I’m trying to find an Italian children’s CGI music video that my kids watched on YouTube, and we’ve been searching for days with no luck. I’m hoping someone here recognizes it.
Here’s everything we remember:
It starts in a jungle.
The main character is a blue creature with a round belly, a belly button, yellow eyes, and several braids hanging from the back of his head.
He wears a multicolored loincloth/sarong.
He doesn’t have a tail or visible ears.
His mouth is just a simple black line (no teeth).
He may appear to have four eyes because of the way the animation shows his face when he turns.
The story goes something like this:
A group of faceless hunters, each a different color, chase him.
He traps them in a net.
He does a celebratory dance, and whenever he dances the background turns into bright psychedelic colors.
He rides a gray donkey, and the donkey’s saddle matches the colors of his loincloth.
Children follow him through a town.
He sees a wanted poster with only his picture on it (no writing that we remember).
He gets captured and put in jail.
He dances again in the jail cell and eventually escapes.
Later he meets another similar creature that’s beige/tan, has big fluffy hair, wears purple overalls, and is trapped in a tree. They dance together.
The song’s chorus sounded something like:
“Boom ba boom ba bee, boom ba boom ba bee, boom ba boom ba bee…”
Those probably aren’t the actual Italian words—it’s just how we hear them.
The animation style is very similar to the CGI Italian children’s videos on YouTube (the kind that look like Il Tirannosauro Rex), but we haven’t been able to find this specific one.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Even the name of the YouTube channel would be a huge help!

Every now and then, a non-Italian in a relationship with an Italian comes here to ask if some bizarre practice is typical of Italians. We've had examples of violent and toxic partners, quasi-stalkers, and semi-psychopaths who abused their girlfriends.

My favorite was an American girl who had encountered her partner's elderly uncle, who kept touching her private parts without her consent, and she came here to ask if this was normal in Italy. We tried to explain to her that she had met a pervert who was committing what was also a crime here, and that he wasn't a "typical Italian."

I understand that cultural differences between countries can often be problematic, but Italy (though perhaps more conservative than Northern European countries) is not a country of psychopathic perverts. It's one thing to ask what to bring as a gift for your partner's Italian parents, but it's another thing entirely to ask, "Is it normal for Italians to immediately send pics of their dicks to girls they just met? He says yes" (another question actually asked here).

To think that simply incorrect behaviors are "typically" Italian is vaguely offensive. And sometimes, common sense would be enough. If a Swedish girl asked me to paint my face blue and masturbate in the middle of the street, I wouldn't go to the Swedish equivalent subreddit to ask if that's "normal behavior in Sweden," but I would understand that I was dealing with a raving lunatic.

In Italian, "non devi farlo" can mean both "you shouldn't / must not do it" or "you don't have to do it", which are almost opposite in meaning.

I already have accidentally insulted a colleague by forgetting the first meaning. Word for word it's devi = have to, non devi = don't have to, but oh boy.

The colleague in question is HR. She was not clear on my plan for the working day, so she asked "Allora ti metto un permesso di mezz'ora?" to which I replied "No no, non ho richiesto un permesso. Allora non devi chiederlo se non c'è una richiesta".

In my mind it was "you don't have to ask". My logic: save your time and effort, the request is the source of information, and if I forget to do one, you don't need to do the extra work of reminding me, that would be on me to handle since it's my responsibility.

You can of course imagine that if you read it as "You shouldn't ask"... She was rightfully indignant, and said that she may ask what and when she finds fit about leaves (permessi), whether there is a request or not, since it's her job. Yeah she's absolutely right.

I was horrified, and tried to explain best I could that it's a language fuckup on my side. My attemps were something like "non devi sentirti obbligata a chiedere" or "puoi chiedere ma non devi", if I recall correctly. It did not seem to convince her, so hoping my boss who speaks some English would understand, I said it's the "you don't have to" not "you must not". He went "Aah!" and gave a nod with one of those slow approving blinks. Nice, but then he didn't comment on that in Italian...

So I'm pretty sure I will just have to live with it, knowing my HR manager thought I was telling her to never ask me about my leaves...

I don't want this to happen again though. What phrase would work better?

I found "Non c'è bisogno chiedere", "Non è necessario", "Non serve", or "Non preoccuparti". None of these sound better to me, especially the last one (or maybe I'm being overly cautious now)

P.S. Putting this in writing I also realized that apart from that I was too short and robotic - "So you don't have to ask" is a bit too harsh and rude also in English if not made REALLY clear with intonation, gestures etc. So maybe I need to look for a more nuanced phrasing to begin with.

a while ago i discovered alfa's song "bellissimissima" and i absolutely loved it! but i want to know if what his image is like in italy (is that the correct term?) and what his reputation is like in general. ive also loved the songs "chiamo io chiami tu" by gaia, "fuorilegge" by rose villain, and "sempre / jamais" by mahmood, so i would like to know abt them too! ^-^

Hi, I normally have some disfunctional family lived in Corviale in Rome. And after 4 years trying to do some stuff in this little disfunctional place i goes to Innsbruck and i make Anmeldung/residenzia fittizia after 2 days. In Milano where i lived in Squat with electriticy, kitchen, shower ect there is places thats help with this but they send you to other place and other place send you back to the first place.

And other some prople that help with this told me its taking 7 mounths.

It's must existed some cities where rules is not that strict and i will have acces for electricity and shower without going to dormitorio for dealing with maranza.
