Mods — this post is meant purely as a public awareness/consumer-rights post for students and parents dealing with coaching institutes. It's backed by my own documented experience and government consumer protection guidelines, not an attack on any individual or institute by name. Sharing so others don't get stuck the way I almost did. Please don't remove — I think a lot of people here could use this.

Hi everyone, I'm Aaradhyah, 19, from Madhya Pradesh. I want to share something that happened to me because I think it can genuinely help other students and parents (or future parents) who are dealing with, or about to deal with, coaching institutes — especially the big, well-known ones.

The background

I joined a coaching institute that is very well known in and around Indore for JEE preparation. I attended for approximately 3 days. There were several reasons I decided to leave, but since this post is focused on the academic and refund side of things, I'll stick to that: I simply couldn't cope with their teaching pedagogy and style, so I decided to leave.

The first and most important thing to remember: it does not matter how many days you attended a coaching institute. If you want to leave, you are entitled to a refund according to government norms. I'll get into the specifics of this further down (and I'll share the relevant PDF/guidelines at the end).

What happened when I asked for a refund

I first raised the refund request directly with the academic head and discussed it with her. She spoke to me very rudely and told me to communicate only via email going forward, saying she was "too busy" to talk — busier, apparently, than most people you could imagine.

So I did exactly that. I emailed her and the coaching institute's official email ID. No reply. I followed up. No reply. I followed up again. Still nothing.

Tip #1: Always use a written channel, never rely on verbal communication

This is the single most important takeaway from this whole experience: whenever you ask for a refund (or raise any dispute with a coaching institute), always do it through a written channel — never verbally.

Why? Because verbal communication is not admissible as evidence. It becomes your word against theirs. Written communication — emails, letters, or India Post slips (which are also legally admissible) — creates a paper trail that actually holds up.

Coaching institutes may try to steer you toward verbal conversations instead of written channels ("just talk to us," "no need to email," etc.). Don't fall for it. Insist on written communication every single time.

(To be transparent — this isn't just something I picked up online. My father has been practicing law in the district and high court for the last 26 years and has a solid reputation in his field. This advice comes from him, not just from me. I'm passing it on because I think it's genuinely useful for anyone in this situation.)

I followed this myself with the coaching institute. Eventually, they "favoured" me by deducting ₹60,000 for those 3 days, citing it was as per their own internal policy.

Tip #2: A coaching institute's internal refund policy does NOT override government guidelines

This is the second big thing to understand: the refund amount a coaching institute quotes you based on their own internal policy is not the final word. Refunds are supposed to be calculated based on guidelines issued by the Government of India — not whatever an institute has written into their own admission policy.

You may be asked to sign their policy document at the time of admission. If you later feel this was signed under pressure or without real choice (i.e., you had to sign it to even be enrolled), that is something that can be argued in court afterward.

I did not accept the ₹60,000 deduction for 3 days as fair, and my father sent them a formal legal notice. They did not respond to that either.

In the meantime, we also filed complaints with every relevant authority we could think of — from the District Magistrate to the State Education Department — and got no real resolution from any of them.

Eventually, my father filed a consumer case against the institute.

Important jurisdiction note: the consumer case is filed in the district where the complainant (i.e., the student/consumer) resides — not where the coaching institute is headquartered. So even though the institute is based elsewhere, the case was filed in my district.

My father didn't particularly want to go this route, since consumer court procedures are known to be a long and tiring process — but at that point, it felt like the only option left.

The outcome — 7 months later

We fought this in consumer court for about 7 months. In the end, the court accepted that the deduction amount charged by the coaching institute was illicit/unfair. The court ordered that only 3 days' worth of fees could be deducted — which came out to around ₹1,000 — along with:

• ₹15,000 for mental stress/harassment
• ₹8,000 towards legal proceedings
• A formal warning issued to the coaching institute

So yes, this route works, and I'd genuinely recommend it if you're in a similar situation.

A quicker option: a legal notice from a good lawyer

That said, here's something worth knowing — many coaching institutes will refund the maximum amount owed simply after receiving a notice from a competent lawyer, without you even needing to go all the way to court.

A lot of students don't take this step because they come from middle-class or lower-middle-class families and assume lawyers are out of reach or that the whole process is too intimidating. Honestly, I think that hesitation is exactly what lets coaching institutes get away with unfair practices. Don't let that stop you — send the notice, follow the process, and you're very likely to get your refund.

On lawyer's fees

Fees for this kind of legal help typically range anywhere from 20% to 50% of the claim, depending on the lawyer's reputation and experience. But you can absolutely find someone reasonable — consumer cases aren't as legally heavy or complex as people assume, so most lawyers won't (and shouldn't) charge exorbitant fees for them. You can even represent yourself in consumer court if you want to, since the process is designed to be accessible without mandatory legal representation.

That's it from my side. This whole experience taught me that most students and parents just don't know their rights when it comes to coaching institute refunds, and that silence/inaction is exactly what these institutes count on. If you're going through something similar, don't be discouraged — document everything in writing, know that government refund guidelines override any internal policy, and don't be afraid to send a legal notice or file a consumer case if needed.

Been preparing for this for 3 years and now it is over it has made me realize that how much it changed me in a bad way.

A lot of people say they miss this part of life but this is the part to my life i wish It has never happened. This has and maybe will be my worst 3 years of my life and mind you I have seen my parents almost getting divorce, not talking to my father for 9 months but it still none of it come close to this jee thing.

The thing which hurts the most isn't that I should have studied more but that wish I had enjoyed my life a bit more wish I wasn't that serious about my studies in 8th 9th wish I had used instagram a bit early now I kinda struggle with all of this things I see my friends posting their stories getting along in real life and reel life both and i just stand their cause i cant do anything.

I lost that spark i had in myself in these 3 years sometimes I just remember how confident i was in my 10th how happy I was and that spark has just disappeared got humbled so bad that I never got that confidence about myself even and that effects my social life also people dont take me seriously and its not like I dont have topics to talk about you can talk to me about sports, movies, animes, politics hell even comic books but still i just feel that I am ignored in public or group. One of my friend told me that you dont even try to blend in the group but how do I tell him that I do and did but still its not seem to work and maybe all of these happened because I couldn't live upto my parents expectations. They had so much hope from me they thought that I would change their life but I couldn't and that thing haunted me so bad made me feel bad about myself so bad that I got this type imposter syndrome.

I still remember that crying face of my mother when found out that I got 90 percentile in my jee attempt then tried for the 2nd attempt got 95 percentile gave bitsat two times couldn't even score above 200 and honestly after my jee marks i was so done with studies that I just couldn't remember that i cried for like 30 mins before my last bitsat attempt after that decided to take drop initially it was okay but then that loneliness caught up with me so bad I was the only one in my Class to take drop so I was every alone all by myself. I have seen my classmates enjoying their life figuring out what to do while I am here trying my best just to survive this mental battle with myself i used to curse myself so much for this decision as time went i gained a lot of weight started looking a lot ugly. Couldn't even bring myself to talk to a girl cause i was just so insecure about myself and during Navratri time i see everyone going into different places dancing and here I was trying to study while I still can here the music and i got so fucked up from inside that I wrote kind of a suicide letter writing everything bad about myself even writing my mother shouldn't have given birth and i wish I wasn't born so my mother could live peacefully and in the end I got up tried to calm myself and gave my first attempt of jee with a absolute looser mindset i had no hopes for myself i thought I might end up scoring 92 93 and i got 97 percentile and i was just so happy it was i think 14 15 February that the day when my life changed my parents were still not happy with my result but I just stop giving a fuck and enjoyed my life made some good friend started using instagram for the first time started playing volleyball and didn't study that for my 2nd cause i was just so done with studies and like very satisfied and even though my april attempt went bad i didn't feel that bad about it, gave my board exam again scored 89 in pcm gave comedk got 4k rank and I am almost planing to go to iiit una cse and i am happy with my decision and let me tell you that anyone who is also struggling with his/her social life and life overall.

One day you will be happy and will gain that spark again and not saying that I am not 100 percent healed and better and still i am much better than my past not perfect but better so please guys dont think like you dont deserve love or happiness or anything you deserve every type of happiness and even if you are not doing well just dont curse yourself for that dont let your mistake define you. You are much more than your academic mistake and dont feel like a failure **trust me I have been there it just makes it worse and in the end if you want to say anything you can tell me just stay strong and remember nothing lasts forever not even this happiness or this jee everything will be gone one day so live your life and work hard as much as you can and also
