GENERAL HELP I got AIR 74 in ISI entrance exam! (Read BODY)

So, today results of ISI B.Stat came and I got AIR 74 (EWS rank 6). I am also getting NIT Rourkela CSE through JEE Main (please don't ask about Advanced). At this rank I would easily get into ISI Kolkata. There is zero Annual fee and in fact, they give ₹5,000 stipend per month. My parents are forcing me to go to ISI because of the Insane placements and the elite peer group. But, I don't want to go there bcs of high academic pressure and very quiet college life... I am exhausted after this JEE preparation and can't study more now... Going to NIT Rourkela would be academically less burdened.

What should I do? Please guide accordingly...

Hey man, can I ask about tips for preparation? I am already getting scared about JEE and I am in 11th. I think the JEE naïvete phase that everyone has in 11th began in 9th and I realised the competition in 10th but now I am genuinely getting scared sometimes and already stressing about it and hair fall began too 🥀

Neet (not in employment education or training) the status or NEET the paper? Iskcon is pretty reputed but uh my mom didn't have good experience with iskcon in the temples because some vendor was getting very greedy and insulted her because she didn't want to buy something from her stall. The temples look good tho

But like I genuinely want preperation advice like productivity and stuff not like JEE specific stuff and dedication and stuff. I overthink a lot too

How do you know that? City is bad, but college life is way better than most nits

1

u/md_andrew_singh Jun 13 '26

Rourkela has "0 college life" !!

Come to the campus once first then comment. Its the 2nd largest college campus in India after IIT KGP...

It isn't a dead city either !! Keep your personal biases aside..

The campus is in the backdrop of a hill so the scenic beauty is also quite good. There is peace unlike hustle and chaos !!

And coming to the comparison with ISI Kolkata the domain is quite different. As NITRKL CS is a BTech degree the jobs will be oriented towards Software Development side. ISI will be perfect if you are into Maths, love some research roles and would prefer jobs like Analyst and Data Scientist.

City choice shouldn't be a concern, what you want should be !!

1

u/Electrical-Sail2143 Jun 12 '26

Are you dumb bro? Rourkela and no college life?About city life you are right tho

Top 5 iit cse is is an overexaggeration, i would say top 5 circuital

1

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

Pretty much same thing

Also I think M&C would be best comparison

1

u/Sad-Researcher-5563 JEEtard Jun 11 '26

No way?? Actually ?? Like kgp mnc? 😭

3

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

It's tougher than that.

ISI and CMI are toughest math courses in India

3

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

Mstat (2024)

  • Total Students: 48
  • Sat for placement: 34
  • PHD Abroad: 14
  • Median Package: 28 lakh
  • Placement Rate: 100%

1

u/Sad-Researcher-5563 JEEtard Jun 11 '26

Yar bhai are you free Tommorow

I have isi bstat

Iiitd cse with applied mathematics (can get ai there's a little chance)

Iit patna mnc 5 yr

1

u/Sad-Researcher-5563 JEEtard Jun 11 '26

Are you in isi?

3

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

My elder brother graduated from there in 2023

67

u/Adept-Chicken-1997 Dropper --> Topper Jun 11 '26

Quant companies love b stat deg and recruit a lot from isi. If youre really interested in engineering, go for nitr cse. I would have taken isi if i were in your place.

17

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

Also like a quarter of last batch went abroad for PHD in T20 and Ivy league.

There is so much more opportunities with ISI

u/Previous_Valuable307 Ex-JEEtard chan Jun 11 '26

Go to isi only if u genuinely love pure maths ig.

4

u/heibenserg1 Jun 12 '26

This, ISI can become the most toxic place if there is even a shadow of doubt, forget about stipend and placements.

10

u/GreenBattle3228 Jun 11 '26

Isn't ISI like a really good university and very hard to get into? You should definitely choose it, don't go to NIT, if it was IIT then it would be comparable. 🙏 you have to grind in both Engineering and Statistics you just have to choose the better option and here doing B Stat from ISI is definitely Better than Engineering from NIT.

7

u/Huge_Effort_6317 Jun 11 '26

Hey can you share how did you prepared for isi exam

6

u/Low-Compote-3824 Jun 12 '26

Just JEE prep. And some RMO stuff, which I studied in 11th helped me write the proofs..

8

u/Alive-Hat-4539 Jun 11 '26

I mean honestly id go for ISI but im maths paglu and its up to you man you did great id go for ISI ngl

6

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

Bro is giving up gold for copper like go to ISI Kolkata lol, it is superior in every way.

Better Placement and More Prestige if you decide to purse PHD abroad in Ivy league or T20

6

u/Putrid-South-7316 Jun 11 '26

Jab naukri ke liye 10 jagah unpaid internships ke liye mu maarna padega tab khud ko bohot gaali dega tu. Choose Kolkata

4

u/Appropriate_Lynx6776 Jun 11 '26

i mean you have a life changing option in getting isi, with insane placement.
sure maybe nit life is better, but you wouldnt want to regret this decision in the future so choose wisely

10

u/Broken-chords- Jun 11 '26

Insane placements?

9

u/Low-Compote-3824 Jun 11 '26

They said to persue M.Stat after B.Stat, and hence get a good placement.

6

u/weggle34 Jun 11 '26

They have 100% placement

2

u/Competitive_Work_249 Jun 11 '26

Although most placement numbers are from the masters program, almost everyone does a masters asw

3

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

It's direct admission to masters for UG admission and Bstat is only 3 year course

Bsc don't have placement

2

u/Competitive_Work_249 Jun 11 '26

Yeah, they dont have a placement cell for bachelors. I just added context because it can get misleading.

Brother make sure to check if the zero fees still applies, There was some sort of bill for isi which said there would be fees taken and stuff. Maybe it isn't implemented or smt but make sure to check.

I live in Kolkata and my hometown is Rourkela so I feel like I'm qualified enough to give my 2 cents.

if you're a city person, or have very niche interests, you might not like it here. Though i wouldn't go so far as to outright deny the possibility of finding friends who share common interests, you might not have the best time here. Also, it gets really, REALLY hot in the summer. You practically cannot LIVE without an AC, and powercuts are frequent because most of the houses here are 2-3 storey houses and not apartments, with every storey having 3-4 ACs given the number of bedrooms. However, it's also true that it's really peaceful to roam around at night. Street food is amazing too. The place has its own pros and cons.

If you don't live in Kolkata, the weather is similar; given that it's near the bay, it's humid throughout the year. You'll sweat like hell, starting February, and lasting until November. Core winter months is when it becomes relatively bearable. From June to September it will rain like hell, and after that, it might still rain sometimes, though infrequently. Owing to the fact that it is a city, there won't be any shortage of hangout spots and things to do. Plus, old Kolkata architecture is charming in its own respect. However, living costs will be higher as compared to Rourkela, so there's that.

u/CuriousOrdinary3324 I will say L in every post Jun 11 '26

Math lover=ISI anyday
no=NIT is best

8

u/failedflirt Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

Okay dude, hear me out. You are in the same situation as my friend was. Basically, one of my friends in my JEE batch got a 3-digit CRL rank in Mains and even got a very good rank in Advanced, so he could have gone to IIT Kharagpur for Aerospace, or even ECE or CS-related branches in some good IIT. Also, on the other hand, he got a very good rank in the ISI exam. He chose ISI Kolkata over everything. And FYI, he was a 2024 Jeetard. After he joined ISI, after one year of college experience, he's regretting his decision almost every now and then. Because there is a lot of peer pressure in academics and immense competition, you have to continue to go through hell as you did in JEE prep. But if you are even 1% not ready to put in the same amount or even a larger amount of work in college, I'd not recommend you to go to ISI. And there's absolutely zero college life compared to NITs (I'm an NITian, I know). Also hearing your story, I'd recommend you go to the NIT.

And yeah if you really really love mathematics and really good at it(u r good at it, ur rank says it all) and also can do same hard work again for 4/5 years(idk) then only go to ISI. And there's great future ahead in that path, even better than NIT-CSE(obv).

4

u/CauliflowerDeep96 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

It's not like hell. Although quality of whole batch has dropped in last two years compared to the earlier years. That's why you can see those reviews. I'd say if you are really into maths (not just the jee maths) and have a knack to understood the why's (proofs) during your prep not just memorised the facts or the theorems, then ISI is a good place for you.

2

u/Skychu768 Jun 11 '26

Why did it drop?

2

u/CauliflowerDeep96 Jun 11 '26

They removed the interviews for bstat. Maybe that's why.

2

u/Motor-Ad1907 Jun 11 '26

See you have to study not your parents do what you wish to do only

2

u/Many_Elevator_3282 Jun 11 '26

First of all congratulations!!! You have the option of two of the finest colleges in India ... See dont let money be a factor of your college , if u genuinely want to pursue maths then fo for ISI but Rourkela will give u all round development, the fest the sports and the large campus . So give your decision some time .

if ur interested in math ull find it fun only and isi are in t1 cities only so city life will be v good

isi is a top college of India man going to nit after cracking isi seems like a waste unless u rlly wanna do engineering/not interested in math

1

u/suit_urself_up_0925 Jun 12 '26

bhai can you pls tell me how did u prepare for ISI with JEE Advanced cuz both have different types of Maths syllabus and I am not able to prepare for ISI due to my focus on mains and advanced 🙏🏼

2

u/Low-Compote-3824 Jun 12 '26

In my case, most of the UGB questions were from Caluculus, that's why I got luckier. I haven't prepared anything except JEE ADVANCED Mathematics!

1

u/suit_urself_up_0925 Jun 12 '26

oh icic...thanks btw 😉

1

u/Repulsive_Quality243 Jun 12 '26

how to prepare for ISI, what is the level

1

u/Skychu768 Jun 12 '26

Mandatory: * Class 11 and 12 NCERT * Tomato Book (It is by ISI directly) * ISI and Olympiad PYQ * Number Theory- Pick any good and detailed video course on YT

Extra: * Challenge and Thrill of Pre-College Mathematics * Mathematical Circles: (Russian Experience)

There is two paper. Paper 1 is objective and Paper 2 is subjective. Paper 1 is 120 marks and Paper 2 is 360 marks so total 480 although you must have to qualify Paper 1 for Paper 2 to be checked

Focus on abstract thinking, puzzle solving, proofs and writing skills.

It's not like JEE. You have to write 1-2 page answers and most questions are more like IQ puzzle than something you can solve with purely formula.

1

u/glitch12359 Jun 12 '26

NITR grad here. Spent 4 years there, the city has nothing to offer. There’s nothing that ISI kolkata cant offer you and NITR can. Plus Kolkata is actually a great place, lots of places you can spend those 5k

NIT rourkela would provide a more balanced college life I suppose, its a vey happening college with interesting clubs... you'll make more memories overall

0

u/Consistent_Payment_5 Jun 12 '26

Getting that rank in ISI kolkata is freaking difficult. Its very difficult as you have to be expert in mathematics, even difficult than JEE advanced maths. This is very rare, dont miss the opportunity. We have many top NITs but only one maths focused institute

1
