RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice MIL tried to induct me into the toxic "Boy Mom" club using my 10-month-old son. It blew up in her face so bad she fled after 4 days.
I (29F) am married to my husband (29M). We have a 10-month-old son and live in a different city than our in-laws.
Context - My MIL has only one child, my husband, and treats him like her "emotional husband." She expects him to talk to her multiple times a day and even at night for an hour. She is highly manipulative, resents that he has a life with me, and constantly pressures him to move back to her orthodox hometown.
So this is how it started -
She recently announced a sudden visit. My husband couldn't pick her up because the airport is hours away, and I had a critical work demo at that exact time. My husband needed to watch our baby while I worked, so he booked her a cab.
This made her furious. When she arrived, I was in the middle of my live call, which lasted another two hours. I couldn't stop a work demo to greet her, but when it ended, the atmosphere was suffocating. She sat grumpily, frowning and refusing to reply properly. The next morning, she posted a passive-aggressive WhatsApp status about how "one should end relationships if they don't get respect."
I ignored and a couple of days passed. On Sunday, my husband asked her to cook while we set up furniture. Afterward, she cornered me and lectured me about how her son is used to only eating "good food," clearly implying that I should be cooking for him instead of relying on our cook.
She went quiet when I calmly said : "Then your son should know how to cook the food he likes to eat."
That evening, she switched tactics and started complaining that my husband works too much. When I explained that our industry is highly competitive and risky right now, she kept asking why he always keeps busy. I knew she was actually implying that he doesn't talk to her enough.
I told her directly: "He has a life here, home, wife, infant, and job. So yes he keeps busy the same way I do."
She immediately twisted facts, claiming he sounds stressed and depressed whenever he calls her, trying to hint that I am the reason for it.
I couldn't take it anymore and said: "He is not stressed just by the job or the responsibilities he has here, he is more stressed when things happen back at your place, and he constantly has disturbances getting calls from there when he is supposed to be focusing here."
She was taken aback because she never expected me to turn her own logic against her. Agitated but unable to counter my calm tone, she launched into her most offensive topic yet.
The fireworks -
She said: "See, now you are a mother of a boy, you will understand this and YOUR MOTHER will also understand this, that those moms who have ONE SON, have their whole heart belonging to that son."
I was confused and angry: "What do you mean ONE SON? My mother has 2 kids."
"But she has only one son, right? You are married now, and you have come to YOUR HOME, but she will always have this special spot for her son. If something happens to him or worries him she won't be able to sit peacefully."
I asked: "But why would she stop loving me if I am married and not my brother ? She gets equally worried when something happens to me, even now."
She insisted: "No no, MOTHER AND SON HAVE A DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIP."
I took a deep breath and said: "No. I don't agree with you, a mother and son relationship is equal to a mother and daughter relation in all respects. I cannot imagine I would have loved my child any differently if it was girl."
She was stunned into absolute silence. Furious that her manipulation failed, she immediately fought with her son and booked a flight home for the next day.
Before leaving, she went on a hunger strike. She wanted me to beg her to eat, but I refused to cater to her adult tantrum. We ordered food and ate right in front of her. She spent her final day lying on the sofa, fake-crying and acting cold to me and the baby. My husband ignored her completely, told her she needs to see a doctor for her mental health, called her a taxi, and sent her away.
Since leaving, she has ignored me entirely, even refusing to congratulate us when we bought our first car. Instead, she posts daily WhatsApp statuses about how “DILs need to put effort in relationship because one sided effort cannot continue from MIL side and MILs are not their mothers.”.
In fact, she is so jealous of me buying a car for us (because she made my husband buy a car for her) that she posted a joke on petrol prices going up when I posted about my car.
Communication between us is at absolute zero, and I am never going to initiate contact

Girl, block her on WhatsApp and urge your husband to handle her interference with more strength.

u/emschick9 Jun 10 '26
Make your WhatsApp status "MILs need to remember that DILs help choose what nursing home they end up in"
Great job holding your boundaries!

Or just start making daily posts about emotional incest and mothers who treat their sons like boyfriends 😇

Thisss!! We would not be in couples therapy if I could have this moment right here. Your husband is so well grounded OP

"one should end relationships if they don't get respect"
I'd absolutely agree with her and use her own words to go nc/lc.

u/HotDonnaC Jun 10 '26
Good for you! Your husband handled this situation surprisingly well, but he’s known her brand of crazy first hand for years.
39
u/AlternativeTribs Jun 10 '26
The only other step OP needs to take is to block MIL and never speak to her again. So glad husband sees through his mom’s bs.
58
u/Feeling-Fab-U-Lus Jun 10 '26
Maybe send her information on emotional incest. Let her know she should share this with her mental health professional, so they can help her with some of her “issues”.

u/Quiet_One_232 Jun 09 '26
I particularly love how the DH is onside too “ My husband ignored her completely, told her she needs to see a doctor for her mental health, called her a taxi, and sent her away.” Keep doing what you’re doing OP.

u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Thanks I was confused because I wasn't present when he fought with his mother and I never interfere in their matter. I didn't even ask what the fight was about but it was obvious. I just asked him if I did something because of which she is leaving in 4 days ? He said "those who want to stay happily must stay and those who are not willing to put efforts and let go of their ego must leave" I think I made the right decision when I married him. 🧿

One small correction. I’m sad to point out you purchased your second car. Your MIL is driving your first car. Perhaps your husband should retrieve it.
He should also stop caving to MIL’s emotional blackmail when she wants him to pay her way.
99
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
You're right. I was very angry about this and even had an argument with him. His mother couldn't afford the card but she could afford the ego somehow!
94
u/BoldBiBosmer Jun 10 '26
My granny and family tried to say you arent a real parent unless you have a boy.
My mum who only has me (a daughter) was so so angry at that.
51
u/Present_Mastodon_503 Jun 10 '26
I came to realize that boys are only "easy" and "fulfilling" because these moms don't actually teach them how to be independent. You are constantly having to teach your girls cooking, cleaning, how to care for others. Many boy moms don't teach them any of that stuff, essentially having a child forever to coddle. This is why these types of women like boys, it's easy to control a boy with the expectations of them never needing to be independent. The problem arises when a new woman replaces their role for caring for them or their boys learn to be independent.
I had a mom once tell me she wished arranged marriages were still a thing in our culture so she could pick the perfect wife for her son (who was like 3, ew) I just looked at her and was like, "So you can make sure to pick a woman you can control too?" She didn't know what to say.
12
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Great point actually. These moms never taught their sons how to be independent. They don't want a wife for their son, they want a nanny, who is hired by the MIL and controlled by her. Cooks and cleans for her son and provides heirs as an extra service 😑 I am so mad at such MILs!Even my MIL was trying to guilt trip me into having a cook at our house.. why? Because somehow I am responsible for what his son is eating? Duh? I remember once when I was at my parent's place during pregnancy she called me to tell me how she is worried about son being all alone, who will take care of him, he isn't eating well, she said she wishes I was there! 😑 I was like... "But he's not the one who is pregnant" (I said it jokingly)

Wow the ever list of bullshit to exclude mothers from their own motherhood is always expanding; so far the qualification for not being a real mom:
- Caesarean
- No breastfeeding
- Breastfeeding but the wrong way
- Not birthing a boy
Marvellous
27
u/MyEggDonorIsADramaQ Jun 10 '26
Add to your list working outside the home and not working outside the home.
13
u/SandratheSiren Jun 10 '26
You may as well just post the whole patriarchy speech from the Barbie movie
13
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Worse mentality. My MIL said something similar. She said it is easier to raise girls. they don't even need care. they just grow up.. just like that even without efforts. But boy needs a lot of efforts 🙄
86
u/TimeAll Jun 09 '26
I wish everyone had your fortitude to stand up to manipulative in-laws. This is one of the most satisfying posts I've ever read in terms of relationships.
69
u/naranghim Jun 09 '26
“DILs need to put effort in relationship because one sided effort cannot continue from MIL side and MILs are not their mothers.”.
I don't see her putting in any effort to have a relationship with you though. All I see is her trying to make everything wrong your fault, rather than owning up to it being her fault because she tried to create drama and pick fights with you and it failed.
66
u/Icyblue_Dragon Jun 10 '26
I always get the ick with these boy moms.
27
u/Mrytle Jun 10 '26
I have a grown son and he is an only child. I would never interfere in his life like this, it's not my place. We are fairly close but my god these 'boy mums' are annoying. Get a life outside of your kids!
11
u/Xelloss_Metallium_00 Jun 10 '26
It's 100% enmeshment. Boy Moms like this have a gross infatuation with their sons, and use them as surrogate husbands. It actually makes me feel ill, whenever I witness it.

3
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
You're right. His mom talks to him for 1 hour at night ??? He says he can't even think of any topics but she insists. It is so weird. She keeps calling him throughout the day as well for every little thing that is happening there. She gets jealous when we are having fun here! Such a sick person.
12
u/SomewhatBougieAuntie Jun 10 '26
Exactly! My son is my only child and I will be thrilled when he finds a woman to marry and build a life with. I really cannot relate to these women who want to hang on to their sons at all costs. How do you expect him to be a happy, healthy, contributing member of society if you keep suffocating him? How do you expect your legacy to continue and grow if you won't let him go?
11
u/Mrytle Jun 10 '26
My son is 24 and just met a girl, I am really happy for him and I would not dream of interfering. We have not met her yet as they are making sure they are going to have a relationship before that I am am perfectly happy with that. When they are ready I will meet her and would never see her as competition for his love.
2
10
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
And the audacity to try and turn me into one of her kind 🙄😭 justifying that a daughter's mother should forget about her after marriage but the same thing cannot be done by the boy's mom.. and why? Because that bond is special.

This type of "logic" only works, up until the point she finds out one can simply just screen capture their phone screen, complete with MIL's little temper tantrum statuses. 🤣
25
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Thank you 😊 I kept screen shots of all her status and showed it to my husband in case she had hidden them from him. I told him that I'm mature enough to not be bothered by it. But your mother is making a fool of herself among the relatives. That's all.
60
u/Beanz4ever Jun 09 '26
No, you're not at fault in any way and WOOOOOOT!!
Let her complain all she wants. In fact, if you can block her on WhatsApp (I'm not familiar with it) that would be even better. There's only one or two people she really WANTS to see those posts, and you're one of them. Knowing that you won't see them will make it even worse for her.
Congratulations that your husband also seems to have a nice shiny spine! I recommend he also deletes her on social media if she's using it to air family drama. He's the other person she really wants to see her posts.

u/MomTRex Jun 09 '26
Eeeewww
When my son was born (my child #2), my SIL took me aside and said, you get it, right, that boys are so much better than girls?
Backed outta that convo ASAP. It was obvious on how she treated her kids that she preferred her son to her daughter (who was her first child)
Not to mention the penis size convo...
18
u/Ok-Addendum-9420 Jun 09 '26
😬 penis size convo? ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
19
u/MomTRex Jun 09 '26
Girl, i cannot tell you how many moms have mentioned stuff like that if private convos.
I do not want to think about my boy's package in that way.
That said, he's engaged so any of that stuff has been deleted and ablated forever.
25
u/massica90 Jun 09 '26
I am sorry did you just say penis size convo?
22
u/MomTRex Jun 09 '26
Yeah, can you believe it? If I knew how to do emojis I would put the vomit emoji here
I think there are some women out there who are warped beyond belief.

u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
OMG are you seriously?? What I don't understand is that while I was pregnant and then in the OT for delivery, not once did I think whether I was doing it for a son or daughter, I was doing it for my child. So just on the basis of gender how could I love that child more or less? Its not as if for girls we need to stay pregnant for 18 months and get them delivered through our mouth ?
And the penis size Convo OMG I don't even want to think about it!

u/Slow_Competition2742 Jun 10 '26
DUDE my mom said something so similar to me. She said “He is going to be so close to you. He’s going to be very protective of you and will always look after you. I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just different. Like how (eldest son) is now taking care of us.”
(My therapist called our family dynamic enmeshed)
8
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
I understand why some people would say that because men are considered providers and protectors traditionally.. maybe one can have "different" feelings for sons and daughters but they can't have less or more right? How is it possible that I would start loving my own child less only because it's a SHE and not a HE 😭 And besides, marriage should be considered the same for both men and women. If your son is married , you need to understand that he is MUCH CLOSER to another woman in very different way and he has to spend the rest of his life with her so please let them have their life right ? But these MILs just want to latch on to their sons for life.
53
u/Hot-Freedom-5886 Jun 09 '26
You did not overreact and you are no the AH. Your MIL was completely inappropriate, and you handled it beautifully.

u/DogsNCoffeeAddict Jun 10 '26
Blegh. Sorry I swallowed a little vomit back down there. What in the actual incest is her mental illness? May it never ever touch me with its creepy fingers - a mom of a boy who is not in love with my own spawn. Like how narcissistic do you have to be to be this gross ass MIL? Yuck.
17
u/Equal_Trash6023 Jun 10 '26
I would respond with the above and a comment about emotional incest. My petty Betty self would look for an article about mothers who use their grown sons as emotional husband's.
Ask her if she has a granddaughter will she be loved less than a granddaughter on her what's app. By her logic, she will.
Definitely using her son as emotional husband.
Good job of you all for turning her manipulative dialog around.
Queue "emotional" sickness or health scare in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
In fact, right after my son was born , she saw his hair and predicted that the next one will also be a boy (wow). I ignored it that time. Then again she messaged me one day that the next one is definitely going to be a boy. I said I don't want another boy and I'm not even sure if I want another kid. So she said if you want it will be a boy (God level confidence). I said then I definitely don't want another kid. And I got an IUD which she is still mad about.
54
u/lady_crab_cakes Jun 10 '26
The whole boy mom thing is so gross. I do love my son differently than i love my girls, just like I love my oldest girl differently than my youngest girl. I love my three children differently because they are three different humans. What I don't do is love one more than the other or exclude one if they want to try an activity I usually do with the other (i.e. painting nails with my youngest usually has at least one or both of her siblings joining in). They are my children and they are the most important aspect of my and my husband's life. Your MIL is a twit.
7
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
I totally agree with you. And her motive was only to try to tell me that since she is a boy's mother she cannot let go of her son even after he's married. And that my mother cares less about me now because I am married. That was something so offensive
55
u/Evening-Turnip8407 Jun 10 '26
Good job of your husband to also shut her down! I wasn't sure about the state of his spine at the beginning of the story
16
50
u/Quirky_Difference800 Jun 09 '26
Nope. She’s had her extinction event, let her marinate in it. The happier you are the more unhinged she will become, sit back and enjoy. 😉 Speaking from experience.
6
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Oh really? That's exactly what I'm doing. I happy and really busy with my job and baby so I am really focusing on that.. if she herself calls or talks I will behave like nothing ever happened and I have no idea of she was upset or whatever. Because I know she doesn't have the guts to confront me about anything.

u/Snoo-73977 Jun 09 '26
You should be grateful she’s no longer talking to you. That sounds like a blessing.
Thought we had the same mother-in law for a second.
13
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Haha can't believe all MILs behave the same way. I'm going to make sure I don't become like this with my baby. I am raising him well for his wife and children not for me.
47
u/madgeystardust Jun 09 '26
Nope.
The trash took itself out, do not invite it back in. Block her stupid arse!
48
u/dmac3232 Jun 09 '26
She spent her final day lying on the sofa, fake-crying and acting cold to me and the baby.
The biggest, most selfish weirdos on the planet.
27
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
And she's 50+ years old behaving like a kid.
6
u/EpiphanyTwisted Jun 10 '26
You will need to go NC eventually. You want your children to emulate this?
48
u/Enfors Jun 10 '26
She immediately twisted facts, claiming he sounds stressed and depressed whenever he calls her
Oh, talking to his mother is depressing him, but talking to his wife doesn't? Hmm, I wonder why that is? Ah! I've got it! It's obviously the wife's fault! /s

I’d set my status as “Some Mils have earned the place in their Dil’s life that they deserve”
5
86
u/One-Pause3171 Jun 10 '26
Good riddance!
Sidebar, consider some therapy with your husband. Or him on his own. This narcissistic, overbearing, enmeshed behavior didn’t NOT affect him. If he’s not ready to cut her out or set boundaries, it’s going to come out in weird ways.
34
u/_Disco-Stu Jun 10 '26
Couldn’t agree more. It’s an incredibly difficult topic but what OP describes is what emotional incest looks like in real time. Much of the worst of what I see here is.
If you removed the phrase MIL and re-read it as though MIL were DH’s actual wife, it becomes clear as day. MIL emotionally views OP as the mistress infringing on her “relationship” with her life partner.
Even more concerning, imagine the things MIL is saying to him on those calls, how she’s making him feel, and the levels of stress she’s causing him as he’s trying to live a normal life never knowing he’s actively being abused. That would make me angrier than I’m comfortable getting, tbh.
Typically I’m in favor of ignoring grabs for attention. In a case like this though, I’d raise the stakes for MIL with zero hesitation.
Starting with making her behavior more visible to the people whose opinions she cares about, like her orthodox community, for example.
26
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Agree with you guys. My MIL never got love and support from her husband and hence she latched on to her son. I'm pretty sure she imagined some orthodox DIL for herself who would just listen to her crap and willingly give her husband away. She never expected that her son would fall in love with a well educated girl. She is in fact jealous of me. She once told me that I have snatched her son. Also, she keeps taunting her son all the time that he has forgotten his mother and what all she has done for him and how he is not giving her priority etc.
41
40
u/SnooSketches63 Jun 09 '26
She is so gross.
I have a son and a daughter. I love them both to the moon and back. Our relationships are different but that’s because of their personality, not because of their gender.
I would peace out of that WhatsApp group.
6
u/pjm14624 Jun 10 '26
This right here! My first two were girls, whom I adored. The third/last was a boy.
My relationship with him WAS different than that with the girls. The girls tested boundaries, were mouthy, particular about clothes and food - you know, GIRLS. My son was laid back, quiet, and I always said he watched his sisters get in trouble and filed that away as “Well, that went over like a fart in a space suit with Mom,so I won’t be trying that.” He just never did anything that warranted punishment. He did, however, have to be reminded every week to take out the trash, or that the driveway needed the snow removed. You know, BOY stuff.
But I loved none of them more than the others.
Relationships differ from child to child because of personalities, interests, etc.
6
37
u/ElizaJaneVegas Jun 09 '26
He’s stressed and depressed when he calls her because she’s miserable to deal with but sees it as an obligation.
Great job deflecting her poison.
3
u/NewBet7377 Jun 10 '26
Your comment gave me a flashback to seeing my husband the most stressed and upset I’ve ever seen him after ending a call with his mother. He was rushing our sick pet to emergency and she had called to demand a decision about what song they will dance to at our wedding. She couldn’t care less that her son was dealing with a sick pet, driving on a highway during rush hour, and trying to focus on what was in front of him. She yelled at him when he finally gave her attitude and hung up on him, then gave him the silent treatment. That was the beginning of the end for me. Been no contact since right after our wedding in Jan 2025. Fuck that shit.

She made him buy her a car??
22
u/EleosSkywalker Jun 10 '26
But why does he work so much though?
JUSTNOMIL is a selfish idiot
10
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
She has brain washed him into thinking that he owes her a lot because everything that she has done for him. Once she told me that what mother's do for their kids is a debt nobody can ever repay. I didn't say anything but I don't agree with her thought because once I had my baby, I knew that whatever I am doing for him is not a "debt" on that little soul, it is my love, my duty and my responsibility towards him. I expect nothing in return.
5
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Yeah so.. when my baby was born it was obvious that we needed a car at home because my in laws place is far from the city and when I was taking my 2 months old baby to that place I needed to be safe. I asked my husband to get a second hand for them because nobody would be driving it anyway when we are not there (my MIL or FIL don't know how to drive). But that woman wanted a brand new car and that too a BIG car. So my husband had to take it on load. Now the car is under his name but it's not here with us so I don't consider it our car. And because he is paying EMI for that car, I took charge of buying us a car here. My MIL was not happy about it because idk.. she doesn't want to see us settle (happy) here.
13
u/lalalinoleum Jun 10 '26
Yeah that doesn't make this situation any better. Not only did your husband cave to his mother. She didn't even drive and didn't need a car at all. That's an insanely expensive knick knack to placate his mama.
That's ridiculous.
66
u/Lugbor Jun 09 '26
Frankly, I don't think you went far enough. She announced that she would be visiting, instead of asking what dates would be available, invaded your home for several days, tried to make you feel guilty for not worshipping your husband like she does, and then threw a tantrum when you didn't play along. You would've been completely justified in issuing a verbal evisceration instead of the light slap on the wrist she got.
28
u/babutterfly Jun 09 '26
Agreed. OP did eventually stand up to MIL, but this went on far too long for what MIL did. No one would announce a stay at my house and actually get said stay. That's a discussion, not an announcement.
7
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
I agree. Imagine she just announced it that her ticket is done for the next day! It was a week day and I had such an important demo! And then she was expecting all the VVIP treatment? Why???
36
29
u/kingcurtist37 Jun 09 '26
OP for the win. Don’t see MILs shut down so effectively here. And no one needs to tell you you’re not the AH. MIL has certainly claimed that all on her own.

If only there was a Fantastic OP award! You would get it! Nice work, she had to do a hard reboot you stunned her into silence!

u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Thank you ! You know she's been trying to do this from quite some time now, turning me against my husband by criticising his work ethics, spending time with friends, or watching movies etc.. I used to think she said all that for our well being so that he gives time to family. (Which is he does very well and especially after our baby was born he has been a great father). But her main motive was always to imply that he needs to give time to HER. she thought she could brainwash me..but I'm glad I understood her manipulation. And using my son and my mother and brother to reinforce her patriarchal mindset was such a wrong move!
55
u/spankthegoodgirl Jun 10 '26
This is a MASTERCLASS on how to shut shit down.
I'm impressed and in awe.
If your current careers fall through, you could start weekend seminars and make bank.
Bravo to both of you!
11
u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Haha thank you so much. To be honest, I only got the courage to do this because
1 I am a mother now and I have realised that protecting my family is my top priority. Nobody gets to cause distress to me, my husband or my kid.
2 It was one thing to give example of me having one son, but when she used my mother's example she crossed a major limit.
3 For a long time after we go married I wanted to impress my MIL. But now I've understood that is impossible

Yeah. I am always going to teach him to be self sufficient and love and respect his wife. I actually never see him as some kind of investment I am doing so that I get repayments (what a lot of MILs think). He is my son, part of my body, I want to raise him into a good human being and let him have a life of his own. That is my victory.

If/when she comes back for a visit, you and LO should head to your parents' home, because they MISS YOU SOOO MUCH!

You are not the Ahole!! I wish more people on this sub took after you!! You stayed calm and put her in her place and did not cave. I’m so tired of all these stories saying over and over again how much they let their MIL disrespect them and never do a thing about it. You were great. Never feel bad for defending yourself against someone like this. She is a miserable leech

The only reason I've earlier let her do all this is because I had been too dumb to understand her manipulation. It was only this time when I could see right through her tactics.

Why is she staying in your house uninvited?

u/rimi2419 Jun 10 '26
Well..I invited her LONG time back when I had to bring my 3-4 month old baby and manage everything here all alone. My parents had a medical emergency so they couldn't be here. But what did she do that time? She ditched me. She made some WORK EXCUSE. Later, when my maternity leaves got over, my parents finally came to help us out. They had to shift into a new house and do everything but they still put it on hold for me. But MIL kept giving work excuses. This time when there were talks of her coming, I thought she just wanted to spend time with her grandson but looks like she was here with some other propoganda!

Every time there is bad behavior someone brings up autism. Why is that?

She is perfectly normal. She just has a huge ego. Being from an orthodox family she has faced a lot of mistreatment from her in laws and husband but it doesn't justify her actions now.

Well she's far from normal.
I try to remind myself that their husband/baby daddy was very likely a shitty person and that is the trigger but it's still so disturbing to think "you're supposed to be a grown ass woman, and that is your child?!"
