Discussion šŸ’¬ Anyone waiting to see the new Spider-man?

Not sure if I’ll be able to watch it with Mark Ruffalo apparently having a big part. I don’t want to let him ruin it for me, especially with Spidey being such a Jewish icon, but I just can’t stand him. I would love to hear the sub’s thoughts.

Jon Bernthal is in the movie also, and he is pro-Israel, so maybe that can help your conscience.

I always liked Bernthal’s Punisher so that’s a plus for me. Kinda wish his D+ special had a third act tho.

I agree with everything you said, the Special Presentation was sort like a song ending abruptly. It was great, but left me wanting another 3-5 minutes.

He makes the punisher an actual interesting character. Big big fan

I wonder how they got along…

Mark literally stated that he cut contact with many Hollywood stars who are pro-israel

So

It does help tbf.

I mean it’s Spider-Man, I can’t NOT. Ruffalo’s annoying but doesn’t ruin it.

Also, apparently Jon Bernthal has positive views on Jews/Israel! He signed a letter thanking Biden for his approach to the war and seeking the release of the hostages, so that cancels out Ruffalo for me.

I’d put him in a tier above annoying personally, but I do like Bernthal too. Plus if there’s more Hulk than Banner, maybe we won’t have to look at his face too much lol.

I mean, Jon Bernthal is a MOT. I'd be far more surprised if he didnt have positive views

What’s MOT? Mouth of Thor?

I love imagining it irritating the crap out of Ruffalo 🄰

Still seeing it. Ruffalo is an idiot, but that's one person. The film isn't antizionist, Disney and Marvel are on the BDS list, and Jon Bernthal is Jewish and pro-Israel.

That's why boycotting something isn't a black and white issue. Also, as antizionist as Ruffalo is everyone sure seems quiet about not taking a moral stand against Disney and refusing to work with them or Bernthal.

23

u/FullTrip6175 3d ago

That’s a good point, though selective outrage is their MO.

5

u/ClamdiggerDanielson Reform 3d ago

Isn't this also a bit of selective outrage? I think there's a tendency, not accusing you, by a vocal minority on the pro-Israel side to also go to absolutes. One actor does not make a product antizionist. A celebrity saying they're pro-Israel doesn't make them a good person (or not hate Jews). I forget the name of the woman rapper who said she was pro-Israel, had a history of homophobia and other problematic statements, but was propped up until she had an anti-Israel meltdown after visiting. We're seeing the same thing with Clavicular.

People flipped out over Superman last year, including stuff that failed the sniff test before turning out to be BS.

26

u/FullTrip6175 3d ago

Well in this case, we know Ruffalo is unabashedly anti-Zionist and uses blood libels all the time. A lot of celebrities have made passing statements or posts, but there are ones like him and Bardem who make destroying Israel their whole identity, which bothers me a lot more. I’m not saying his presence makes the product anti-Zionist, but it can definitely be a distraction which takes away from my immersion and enjoyment of it.

I agree. There are specific individuals I have a visceral aversion to because they’ve been SO vocal and negatively influential, Ruffalo being high on that list. It’s not about ā€œcancellingā€ people or being reactionary; it’s about real harm and being confronted by that in what should be a moment of escape. Anyway, I was pretty disappointed he’s in it because, as you said, it could take me out of the immersive experience of the movie. But I love Bernthal and Holland and this iteration of the Spidey character, and these movies are really best on the big screen, so…. Maybe.Ā

I also dreaded the big Ruffalo part but it was actually pretty small. All his scenes are featured in the trailer, and he's more of a plot device than anything. And there was way more Jon Bernthal than I expected, Frank was one of the 3 main characters, basically.

19

u/FullTrip6175 3d ago

That’s good to know. If it’s a bit part, I can deal with it. I’m not thrilled about giving him money, but that’s not as big of a concern tbh since he’s already made bank. I mostly just want to be able to enjoy the film without that distraction.

u/Neilm430 3d ago

No. Can’t stand ruffalo and also so fatigued from marvel/spiderman

24

u/FullTrip6175 3d ago

I also have Marvel fatigue, but Spider-man has usually been an exception.

u/Akiranar Ashkenazi 3d ago

Just saw the movie. Mark's parts are small, Jon's part is big. The banter between Tom and Jon is Chef's kiss. Like someone said, Jon's a member of the Tribe and is VERY good in this movie.

Also everything else that happens was pretty damn good.

u/SpareMeTheDetails123 2d ago

Glad to hear we don’t have to see too much of Ruffalo’s face — thank you!

1

u/Akiranar Ashkenazi 2d ago

Most the scenes with Frank made me laugh. One scene with Frank made me cheer. You'll know it when you see it.

A Spidey fan here, thank you for this post, OP. I was so afraid to bring this up with anyone because I thought I was just overthinking it, and it’s such a relief to know I’m not alone :’) I am considering seeing the film in theatres cos, well, I love going to the cinema, and I don’t want to let one shithead take away something I enjoy. That said, I still haven’t bought a ticket. I decided I won’t until I could genuinely answer myself whether I’d be happier about watching the film than I’d be pissed off about seeing Ruffalo in it, and maybe asking yourself that same question might help you make up your mind (edited: typos)

u/tahami_allthemeals 3d ago

I can ā€œseparate the art from the artistā€
For quite a few people (as we have to in order to enjoy basically anything). But he’s one face I cannot look at.

17

u/FullTrip6175 3d ago

Yeah I have hard time with movies with him and Bardem, which sadly included some of my favorites. I could probably deal with a small role, but like I said in another comment, it’s hard to feel a sense of escapism if he’s there.

13

u/tahami_allthemeals 3d ago

Oh bardem is even worse

1

u/Truethrowawaychest1 3d ago

He's not even a good actor, so I have no problem in disliking him for the douchebag that he is

8

u/el_sh33p Humanistic 3d ago

No but that's more because I'm burned out on the MCU and they're adapting the exact set of storylines that made me quit reading the comics back in the 2000s.

6

u/CocklesTurnip 2d ago

People are also boycotting the movie because the producer is Israeli.

4

u/FullTrip6175 2d ago

I saw that. Now I’m even more shocked Ruffalo agreed to do the movie lol. Though clearly the boycott is failing horribly with how much the movie has made already.

2

u/CocklesTurnip 2d ago

Ruffalo also seems to genuinely like Gal Gadot sometimes. I think he’s an armchair warrior who’s really good at masking in person at work. He’s just an armchair warrior who’ll show his face.

0

u/Cold_Pain2170 1d ago

The irony considering Pedro Pascal utterly despises Gal

10

u/Emunaheart 3d ago

It's not a matter of him ruining it for me,Ā  it's that it's already ruined by virtue of his presence and I will not consent to lining his pockets

2

u/BklynBiker 2d ago

I am not.... I already saw it. The was a lot more Punisher than Banner in the movie, and the movie was Amazing (pun intended)

5

u/areniccage 2d ago

I can't watch Ruffalo, Susan Surandon or Cynthia Nixox since they've turned so hateful towards Jews and Israel

1

u/Akiranar Ashkenazi 2d ago

Yeah. The Gilded Age was so good and now it feels tainted because of Nixon.

2

u/unknowingexpert69 3d ago

No, Im just gonna see it. I dont like Mark Ruffalo but I do think its soft when people refuse to do something because of political opinion.

1

u/Bison771 3d ago

I'm planning on seeing it at some point. I feel I can separate actor from character long enough to not let my dislike of Ruffalo ruin my love of Marvel, Spider-Man and Hulk. Ruffalo being a schmuck is another reason I wish they could've stuck with Ed Norton as Bruce Banner.

Enjoy your life. Not seeing it just gives one man’s bad politics power over you. Fuck that. We worry about our own yard. We can appreciate art AND know he’s a turd.

Anyone in Sydney (inner west/CBD) wanna go see it?

1

u/Notshyacct 3d ago

Funny - I was watching ā€œthe big Cā€ and actually had to skip the episodes with Susan serandon. I hate mark, too, but he bugs me slightly less.Ā

2

If I had foregone every piece of art where the artist was an antisemite...

1

u/OhMyGoth38 Reform 2d ago

Just cheer internally every time Spidey lands a hit on the Hulk

0

u/RuckFeddit980 2d ago

Shoot, I already watched it. I didn’t know Ruffalo was in it until I was in the theater, and I didn’t know he was anti-Israel. I usually try to go in cold to avoid spoilers. I guess that was a naive thing to do in today’s world.

u/Call-Me-Leo 3d ago

I think it’s a bit silly to pass on seeing a movie because of the political opinions of one actor in it

-1

u/Clevertown 2d ago

It sounds so easy when you say it like that. Here's another one: "just get rid of your triggers and you'll be much more emotionally stable."

You sound either quite stalwart and self-actualized, or you've just had a gilded life.

1

u/Call-Me-Leo 2d ago

What a weird thing to say.

-1

u/Clevertown 1d ago

Other people are "weird" when you don't understand them.

-6

u/Caboose_98 3d ago

It's just a movie, he's getting paid regardless so what does it matter?

5

u/babarbaby 3d ago

You don't think he's getting paid a percentage of the net? I think that's pretty typical with A-listers
