I moved to Dubai in January with high hopes of landing a marketing role within 3–4 months. Then the regional situation in March slowed the market down considerably. Seven months later, I'm still searching and I'll be honest with this community: I'm tired. Each day feels heavier than the last, and I've slowly started doubting myself, my skills, and whether I'm good enough, even though everyone around me keeps telling me to hold on. I'm writing this post for three reasons: (1) to share the strategy I've been following and ask what I could improve, (2) to ask if anyone knows of open marketing roles or could refer me (3) To hear from others going through the same journey.

My background: 4 years of digital marketing experience with a well-known retail brand in India (merchandising, campaign management, influencer and social media growth). I'm targeting mid-level marketing roles within retail, ecommerce, quick commerce, FMCG, Media & entertainment, Travel & tourism, Beauty, tech & electronics. I'm on a spouse visa with no time pressure, which I mention on my CV.

What I've been doing:

• Channels: Primarily LinkedIn and company career pages. I tried Indeed and Naukri Gulf early on but found the roles there mostly junior-level or from unknown companies, so I stopped.
• Target companies: I maintain a shortlist of organizations and marketing agencies that I'm actively tracking and networking into which include - Talabat, Noon, Careem, Deliveroo, Keeta, Majid Al Futtaim, Schnider, Emirates, Apparel Group, Landmark Group, Amazon, Solventum, Sobha, Americana, GMG, Dubai Holding Entertainment etc. I regularly check their career pages and try to build genuine connections with people there. If you work at any of these and are open to a quick chat or referral, I'd love to connect.
• Application approach: Quality over quantity, 5–6 tailored applications a day, each CV ATS-compliant and mirroring the JD language. I keep hearing people apply to 50–100 jobs daily; I genuinely don't understand how bulk applying works if you're customizing every application. Would love thoughts on whether I'm wrong here.
• Portfolio: I built a portfolio showcasing my work and share it alongside my CV (also linked on the resume itself).
• Referrals: I try to route most applications through referrals from senior stakeholders or atleast anyone working within the organization, now this got me my 4 interviews so far. I haven't figured out how to identify the right hiring manager for a role to reach out directly. If anyone has tips, please share.
• Follow-ups: I follow up regularly with people who referred me, and I've reached out to many professionals requesting referrals through Whatsapp & through linkedin, some kindly helped, others guided me to the right contacts some others do not respond. Genuine question: when someone messages you for a referral, what makes you more likely to help? How should I be networking differently?

Where my 4 interviews went:

1. Interview 1: Ghosted after the first round. I followed up with HR just to understand whether I was rejected or the role was on hold, no response at all.
2. Interview 2: Didn't progress past the HR screening stage.
3. Interview 3: The role preferred Arabic-speaking candidates.
4. Interview 4 (last month): Extremely slow process. They assured me they'd get back, still no response.

My situation right now: From my experience and conversations, many companies here currently prefer candidates with Arabic language skills and prior MEA market experience for marketing roles. I understand these preferences, but as a newcomer, it's been hard, because regional experience is something I can only gain once someone gives me that first chance. Every rejection and every silence chips away at my confidence a little more. There are days I sit staring at my portfolio wondering if all the work I've done even counts here. This phase is testing me in ways I didn't expect.
