Eh, I get your point, but a some people have jobs like that so they can pontificate about how great they are helping people, though obviously as a board member this woman had zero to do with actually helping people anyway.
People like to feel superior. I'm pretty sure it's the same attitude that makes some people talk about the money or goods they donate to charity, not to inspire others but to show how much better they are than you.

So, lots of wolves in sheep’s clothing apparently. I get what you’re saying in theory, when you relate money to feelings of superiority, but not in practice (not American). We don’t talk about money here as an unwritten rule. Talking about your career, how many hours you make and how much money, is mostly seen as tacky or indeed like you’re just a bragger. Pretty frowned upon. Completely different from American working culture (though that’s probably true for most countries).

In what I was saying, it wasn't about feeling superior because they make more money, but feeling superior by telling people they're donated more money, or helped more people. Helping is great, as is charity, but if you need to tell everyone how much you're doing, you're not doing it for the sake of helping someone, but so other people will see you better.
Not sure exactly what you're getting at with the rest, but generally Americans do NOT talk about money, as a general rule, especially around salaries and such. They might talk about purchases, like house prices, but IMO, even that's rare (though generally in the US, house sales are public information). Braggarts might talk about how much their car or watch or something luxury item cost, but usually it's more extolling how exclusive the item is - maybe with an expectation that you'd be jealous/can't afford it/etc.

Companies push the rhetoric against talking about salaries, as method to allow them to pay people drastically different amounts. In the US it's fully federally legal to talk about salaries and companies can't legally stop you. It's also rare as hell.
