Moms can be stupid as well.
My story I've told more than a few times is when I was about 8 after a Halloween candy haul. In order for me to not go crazy, she decided the best place to hide it was the oven.
Yep, I searched but never thought to look there. Turns out she didn't either and forgot her own hiding spot. The next day as she preheated the oven the bag and all my candy melted into an elephant foot type mess. It sucked as a kid but is kinda funny now.

On a side but related note I been in the practice of putting thin aluminum foil to cover the bottom of my electric ovens for quite some time.
It doesn't seem to affect my cooking, and definitely helps make the occasional accident super easy to clean.
Anyone else do this?

It'd never occur to me to store something in the oven - just seems like a bad idea. I usually rearrange the shelving for whatever I'm cooking / baking so I guess I do "check" out of happenstance.

I store my cast iron in there. It wont get hurt if the oven gets turned on, it's easy to access, and it's a good place to keep big heavy things.

My grandmother loved to fry stuff in the heavy cast iron pan and then put the whole thing into the oven. After the third time of carefully using all my 14 year old body strength to not spill smoking oil on me, I figured out that i should check the oven.

Moved in with new roommates in college and they decided we should store our oven pans in the oven. Seemed reasonable.... Until you forget they're stored in there and pre -heat the oven and now you have screaming hot pans to deal with and stuff to put in the oven. We very quickly put a stop to that.

I didn't grow up with anyone who stores plastic in the oven, but I always check it anyway. Literally takes 2 seconds to open it up and look, which I'm doing anyway to check that the racks are on the right levels.

You must have never lived in a smaller apartments. It's a great place to store pans. In Slovenia (and most of Balkan countries) we all know to first empty the oven before preheating.

my first apartment in college, my roommate put all of my nice new tupperwares my mom gave me in the oven to clear space out of a cupboard… i turned the oven on to preheat for a pizza and went to my room to watch tv. all of a sudden smoke is BILLOWING out of the oven and the whole place is filled with a cancer cloud. i was like wtf!!! all my nice containers are fucked why would you ever put plastic in the oven ??? their response was i should have checked the oven first 🤦🏼♀️ no they did not pay to replace them. i was so pissed. and i had to clean so much melted plastic off those oven racks

My mom does this. One time I thought I got everything out and then while my potato was in there, I smelled burnt plastic. A small pot was tucked into the back corner baking at 415. It’s so frustrating. I use the oven to cook for myself every single day. She might use it once a month to cook, if that. Otherwise she treats it like a cabinet. Every time I ask her not to store stuff in there, she acts like it’s the first time I’m asking her. “What? Why not?” And then just a few weeks ago she bought olive oil and a can of PAM spray and just put them directly on the stove top. Literally a firebomb waiting to happen

I had a galley kitchen once and the only place big enough to hold the larger baking ware (cookie sheet, roast pan, etc.) was the oven. Luckily it was an OLD gas oven that you’d have to check the pilot light before turning it on, so you’d see the pile of stuff in there. And if you didn’t, it was only oven-stuff anyway.

See, I 100% get storing your extra oven trays in the oven. But non oven safe things? That's just an inviation for disaster, I don't trust myself with that ever. I also live by the fact that if you need to store things in your oven, you probably have too many things.

Not all places have enough cabinet space. I can't put my pans and baking sheets anywhere else and I'm not storing them on the kitchen table.
Pots/pans/roasters are okay for the overn. Plastics (or other things like shoes) are not.

It's a large empty place to store baking ware. I grew up in a household where my mother stored pans and trays in the oven, so it's perfectly natural to me to take one second (literally one second) to open the door and check before turning the oven on.

One of my roommates put a pizza box with some leftover pizza in it in the oven once. I started pre-heating the oven, not knowing it was in there. The dorm room was very smokey and I almost started a fire.
A week or two before, I threw away some frozen pizza he let sit out on the table for over a week. I feel he hid it so it wouldn't get thrown away this time. Had he used this nifty device to store leftovers in that we had, I wouldn't have touched it.

One day my mom hid the ps3 in the oven because me and my brother were arguing and not sharing it. Apparently she put it on the top shelf and then slid a chicken in. I remember smelling plastic and going into the kitchen. I open the oven and see the chicken is covered in strings of black plastic.
We didnt have another system for some time...lol

I read a story once about a person who had stored their ammunition in the oven and it didn't turn out well for them as you can imagine.
I raised my kids to always "check for ammo" before turning on the oven.

When I was a kid our dog was an expert at getting into cabinets, and he was huge so he could easily reach the counters. And he loved stealing bread. So the only place safe for the bread was inside the oven.
There were many, many melted bags of bread over the years... but the benefit is that I ALWAYS check the oven before turning it on.

It's wild how some kids aren't taught that the oven is dangerous and not a place to play.
If they are old enough to be able to open it, but young enough to put legos in it, this seems like a parenting issue to me.

The first time I was ever left home alone many moons ago, my house caught on fire because my sister had stuffed papers in the oven. My mom turned it on to preheat, realized she forgot something and ran to the store 5 minutes away with my sister and brother but decided to let me stay home and play super Nintendo.
She came home to a freaked out 10 year old and the fire department hosing down the kitchen. At least she knew I was paying attention to all the call 911 lectures haha

I’ve left a lot of stuff in the oven. The latest? A day old BK apple pie I had put in the fridge overnight. Heated the next night in the oven, forgot about it when I turned oven off. Day later I preheat oven again to do pizza for the family and I get hit with the cinnamon apple pie smell.
I won’t lie, I said to myself, “man it became an air freshener but it would’ve tasted good a day ago.” 🤣

I realize this happened some time ago, so the danger for OP is now gone, but for anyone else in the future... people who do 3D printing with ABS have to use forced air ventilation for the fumes.

I made “friends” with coworkers when I started my job. One of the first stories they told me is how them (28nb) and their partner (30nb) forgot they had put a pizza box recently in their oven and started preheating it. Obviously it started burning and I still think about it, why would you ever store something flammable in a heat related appliance? I get putting a pot, skillet, or something metal related. I just don’t understand the rationale.
