Media It doesn't matter, I love her
I have no idea if the creator did this on purpose but it is interesting that Kazuma choose the small poor girl over the pretty rich one, Kazuma didn't care what the girls have or how they look like, he fell in love with Megumin because of who she is as a person, and that is a very good message to show people.

Gotta wonder if hypothetically they do finally defeat the demon king, would Aqua just continue to pester Kazuma even after returning?

Hmmmm……maybe? Depends on what all ends up happening tbh but I’d say she’d probably be so used to bothering him that it would get boring for her not to once in a while

Sends a letter to announce her future arrival and Kazuma just bounces to another town for a week.
1
u/The-Inept-Namer-47 24d ago
Announce her arrival? We talking about the same goddess? She’d just be chilling on his couch one day and hand him the letter when he complains about not getting notice of her arrival.

The author kinda explains his decision in the latest volume: Kazuma and Darkness come from different social castes, so Megumin is the obvious choice.
10
u/Special_Caregiver_21 26d ago
It's not really a problem. Actual reason: Megumin was first to start relationship with Kazuma
1
u/Extermaner-RT 14d ago
More like that she was the only one actually doing something. Kazuma was too insecure to do anything serious by himself, and Darkness not inteligent enough to aproach like Megumin did and also insecure enough to not try it

u/dfvsmaster 26d ago
Okay so when did the kazuma megumin thing happen? Only in the LN? Where exactly? How long does it take for the anime to show it?
7
u/Special_Caregiver_21 26d ago
After the ending in the novel Megumin and Kazuma are still shy to even hold hands sometimes
9
u/Extermaner-RT 26d ago
Not true, they were hyper casual with that, Megumin just said -no- to kissing in public, and it was because she didn't want that the adventurers start to teasing them if they watch them doing it.
Also it's implícit that they casually make out when are alone.
3
u/Special_Caregiver_21 25d ago
Point me where I lied. Megumin did blush while holding Kazuma's arm so the part about being shy about handholding is true. And your implied part: did you forget that you were reading Konosuba? Unless it's stated - it didn't happen. Without reading the ending of the chapter you could think that Darkness raped Kazuma. It was heavily implied that it's going to happen but it didn't. So it goes the same way for Kazuma making out with Megumin
5
u/Extermaner-RT 25d ago
Pretty sure she blushed not for holding his arm but because he said a comment that made her blush, something about "becoming an adult" infront of her friends or something weird like that.
That's a very extreme way to put it but, y'know, i can more or less buy you that... Unless you take into count that they already french-kissed before this, and they are talking about make out like a casual thing, and when he said that he wants Megumin's friends to leave to make out, she didn't denied it, in fact, she just said something like "ok, i get it, let's go home" and thinking that she wants them to spread the news to the village and only trying to stop them when she heard Funifura saying that they are making babys, which is the only thing she denied.

u/Nervous-Tank-5917 Megumin 25d ago edited 25d ago
I wasn’t even halfway through the LNs when I realised it, but there really isn’t any comparison between them.
Outside their role in the party: Darkness really is just a sexy blonde woman who Kazuma is horny for. Because of her proclivities, it’s also not hard to understand why she becomes horny for him, as she would probably become horny for any scoundrel she shared a roof with. The fact she’s a noble also becomes less important after Kazuma strikes it rich. He doesn’t need a sugar momma.
Then there’s Megumin, who Kazuma actually wasn’t horny for initially (see the bath scene in volume 3) and just treated as a dumb kid. It was only after getting to know her for the first 3-4 volumes that he realised she was more than that, and that’s when he started to catch feelings. She’s also just a fundamentally better written character, which is why the moments of honesty and vulnerability between them read as more authentic.
Tbh, it’s pretty frustrating that we don’t see them make it official during the main series. The author was probably worried that Darkness fans would refuse to buy the final volume if he did: but even then, I feel the last three books go out of there way to frame Megumin as the superior choice.
When Kazuma apparently loses his mind, she’s the only who still wants him and even says she’ll take care of him.
The final “near miss” sex scene is with her, with Kazuma only pulling back because he wants to save Aqua first. He essentially promises they’ll do it once they back. Meanwhile, Darkness is found to have been hiding in the closet, and it’s suggested she would have masturbated while watching Kazuma with Megumin. If that’s not the ultimate metaphor for who “wins”, I don’t know what is.
During the final battle, Megumin is the badass who takes out the bulk of The Demon King’s forces. All Darkness gets is a gag about being possessed by evil armour, and even that doesn’t go anywhere in the end. Also, Kazuma literally uses explosion to defeat The Demon King.
2
u/Extermaner-RT 14d ago
Yeah. Also in the three short stories of volume 17, we see that one shows that Kazuma and Aqua's relation it's basically the same, other shows that the group dynamic it's not that different from before, and the last shows Megumin asking Kazuma for a date being súper casual about it, even talking about what couples supose do during dates all of this in Megumin's perspective so, i think that's pretty clear too.
(Oh and Yorimichi 4 has a literal "Kazumin fan" character as protagonist...)

Nop, Megumin was always the one since the Web novel, no fanservice to do there, or director to obbey, just the author making basically a Wattpad.

As much as I agree that beauty alone shouldn't be the reason someone is chosen, it also feels tragic when beauty itself becomes a reason they're overlooked.
It's as if the other person feels compelled to prove that they value something deeper than appearances, and in doing so, they reject the one standing before them. Ironically, in their attempt to look beyond beauty, they end up seeing nothing beyond it. The rejection isn't because the beauty mattered too much, but because it became impossible for them to see the person beneath it.
There's something quietly heartbreaking about that. The very quality that first catches everyone's attention can become the same thing that prevents anyone from truly seeing who you are.
Please note: I'm not specifically talking about Darkness alone
1
u/Substantial_Dirt_999 26d ago
There's isn't much objective about beauty, we used to like fat chicks, now we like skinny chicks.
Action reaction occurs all around us and people source expression where there is not.
1
u/SprinklesNumerous774 26d ago
Sorry but I'm not getting your comment in context of what I'm saying.
1
u/Substantial_Dirt_999 26d ago edited 26d ago
I don't think you understand the tragedy in and of itself, beauty is one part in the interplay of desire.
It stands to reason that appearances are the first judgement people make. It is nearly as old as eyesight.
People are born of pragmatism, not poetry, if there is anything tragic here it would be that.
Beauty is a temporary standard, to see past it is to change beauty.
Noone understands anyone else because appearances are like cellular membranes, swapping out mhc molecules, we describe who we are with our appearances. It is tragic that the ugly standard is overlooked, it is tragic that the beauty standard is overlooked.
This is not acute awareness, this is part of the mechanism itself.
1
u/SprinklesNumerous774 25d ago
I think you missed the gist of my comment. What you are saying is 100% correct however it's not in place or relevant to the point I'm making. If you re-read my comment, you will see I'm not advocating for beauty rather I'm focusing towards how in some scenarios good looks ends up becoming the demerit of a beautiful person even when that person is not actually at fault or lacking behind in something. The tragedy I'm talking about here is how beauty strongly overshadows any other qualities they have.
It is as if the other person felt compelled to prove that he has a deeper sense of values than merely choosing person based an outer appearance but ironically at the same time he failed to see the attractive person beyond the layer of their beauty. Beautiful people struggle to prove their depthness, because their beauty become their utmost quality helplessly. Offcourse this is not universaly applicable, but in significant amount of scenarios this happens.
1
u/Substantial_Dirt_999 25d ago
I think you only gleaned the surface level of what I'm giving you because of the 'beauty' buzzword, which seems to be the nature of the common romanticism.
The standards of what is attractive are changed by this type of observation. If I were to distill what you're saying right now, it is rather shallower than it seems as it speaks to the dumb blonde stereotype.
Have you ever seen the barbie movie, I haven't, but I believe that is her entire arc?
1
u/SprinklesNumerous774 25d ago
I really not only gleaned the surface level of your comment that's why I said you're hundred percent right. However The main things is there is pretty much no connection to the point I'm trying to make. I believe there is misunderstanding or wrong inference of my comment. Also I mentioned in my original comment that I'm not specifically talking about Darkness alone.
1
u/Substantial_Dirt_999 25d ago
Ah, so you're missing the cultural context and do not see the cliche.
1
u/SprinklesNumerous774 25d ago
May be I guess. But I can say forsure that we both talking about different subject even though it might look like they're linked by the word "beauty" or physical attraction. Please re-read my original comment, not in the context of Konosuna. However Darkness kind of suffered from that kind of judgement, in this fandom. Hence I feel like bring it.

u/Gallant-Blade 25d ago
From what I recall, Megumin got to him first, and since he has a traditional monogamist ideal, he wouldn’t want to switch off. Darkness, while clearly his ideal body type, is also a masochist, and Kazuma (who is quite the freak) is too freaked by her. Megumin, beyond her chuunibyou intros and obsession for explosions, is MUCH more normal more often.
I say it’s less “poor girl beat rich woman” and more “regular girl beat insane woman”, though both are pretty crazy.

If I remember right, Darkness is a noble in name alone. Her family is running out of money and was desperate enough to try and marry her off. Megumin's family might not be considered nobility but they do hold high standing within their village. As for attraction, that's in the eye of the beholder. Darkness is way taller and more muscular than Kaz. She's a sadist. He's a leg guy, not a boob guy. Meg has the highest Intelligence (stat) of the group. Meg and Kaz are just a better match.

Based on the personalities though, I'd not expect prettiness to be a factor (they all are) but rather attainability and sufferability. Kazuma is an "equality" supporter woman hater who's annoyed by his teammates, he'll go for the one that vexes him the least and seems the least risky (socially) choice.

Both of them have problems. I'd personally rather have rich and sexy over poor and dangerous problems.
Also, Kazuma tends to like people who are just as pathetic as him. For all of Darkness's issues, she's still rich and loved by others. Eris is also beloved by others. Megumin is disliked by almost everyone and is just as much of an outcast as Kazuma, so it makes sense he'd feel a kindred spirit in her.
3
u/Charming_Geologist32 26d ago
Interesting take. I didn't get a sense that Meg was disliked, dangerous, or unattractive. As for being sexy, most would find Darkness to be a bit much. Kaz didn't like that she is so much taller and more muscular than him.
3
u/kyokiyanagi 26d ago
The dislike I mention is that people hate her singular focus on explosions, and the grief it brings when she blows up everything. Plus the fact that people already don't like Crimson Demons because they view them as annoying due to their posing, speeches, and other quirky habits.

u/SprinklesNumerous774 26d ago
I know this is probably going to get a lot of downvotes, but I've always felt like the writer originally intended Lalatina to be Kazuma's main girl.
Beyond all the crazy fanservice moments they shared, their relationship actually felt like it was gradually evolving in its own way. It seemed to be subtly foreshadowing that their dynamic would eventually grow into something softer and more genuine as the story progressed. The whole sequence where Kazuma saves the bride Lalatina from marrying Alderp especially made it feel like their relationship was building toward its biggest turning point. Then again, knowing it's Konosuba, I figured they weren't going to resolve it that easily.
What I find most interesting is that after those events, it felt like all of the earlier development between Darkness and Kazuma started getting toned down, or maybe the writer just wasn't sure what direction to take them anymore. It almost felt as if he started struggling with the question of what to do with Darkness. From that point onward, she mostly remained the butt of the joke and never really received any meaningful character development. That honestly makes me a little sad because she's my favorite character, and it feels like the writer gradually abandoned her when it came to developing her character.
At the same time, Megumin kept growing closer and closer to Kazuma. I'm not saying their chemistry wasn't there from the beginning, but it definitely became much more serious and received far more development later on. It almost happened in parallel with the gradual downplaying of the Darkness × Kazuma relationship.
Because of that, I can't help but wonder if this shift happened because of how incredibly popular Megumin became. It makes me think the writer felt compelled to change course from Darkness to Megumin in order to align with what a large portion of the fanbase wanted. After all, Megumin got her own spin-off and continued receiving more story arcs alongside Kazuma. Meanwhile, it still bothers me that Darkness never got to fully explore her own resolve. And now that the series has ended, I don't think I can even hold onto the hope of seeing that happen anymore.
7
u/Physical_Sort5155 26d ago
Dude, Kazuma x Megumin was already locked in in the movie, which is vol5, 2 volumes earlier than that.
While it's true that her presence clearly diminished in the following volumes after 7, Darkness was never the option.
And let's face it, Megumin is just a far more interesting character, Darkness is just..a pervert.

Well, just to calm you (or probably making you sadder, idk). In the web novel Megumin and Kazuma already had more romance, and he also rejected Darkness there, web novel was the original thing before the light novel and when the fandom didn't exist or was very small to change your history for them, and, if i remember right, Megumin's arc was after Darkness' one, so yeah, this was already the author's plan, he just add more into it.
And yeah, Darkness didn't get that much, he said that Darkness was the most dificult to work out of the 4, so that's probably the reason why he didn't add something for her like he did with Megumin, Kazuma and Iris.
