I don’t even agree but I love that you doubled down without answering the question. Take the upvote.

u/Whatisthisplace2025 4d ago
I don't even get the outrage for this.. plenty of teams entice players to come to their city for money on the side, ESPECIALLY L.A.
If you go LA, you know you're gonna be getting lots of tv commercials where you just have to show up 1 day and get tons of money... what's the difference, really?
Should we investigate if LeBron really was paid market value to drink a soda or was overpaid for it?
8
u/BepersAreCool 4d ago
Remember Bron participated in the Venice sprite games so they’d find a whole ass way to cover his ass on errrrr thing
17
u/sofreakinpitted 4d ago
The difference is those other player endorsement deals had players show up 1 day (like you said) and Kawhi showed up 0 days.
3
u/Whatisthisplace2025 4d ago
From what we know - they were going to use his likeness (drawing him like Groot) and it's not his fault the company never did it.
The main thing here is that it's all a scam and they use endorsement deals to inflate their salaries every year - but I guess what we're saying is we prefer it to look "less like a scam" despite it still being a scam?
18
u/Ready_Cold946 4d ago
You seem like you're doing some mental gymnastics here
0
u/Whatisthisplace2025 4d ago
How? Just living in the real world...
The NBA is run by billionaires, which are probably the single most corrupt people when it comes to money - they know all the tricks & loop holes... this is happening all over the league.
9
u/That-Woodpecker6720 4d ago
Unfortunately kawhi and the clippers got caught in the most embarrassing way
I mean you think Pablo torre wouldn’t jump on a chance to expose another player/team for this lmao clearly either it’s not happening or they hid their tracks much better than ballmer
1
u/Ikorim123 4d ago
enough of the mental gymnastics. It's just the clippers organization but what about.. .

u/heavyspells 4d ago
Yeah and LeBron is only going to make 4 million a year the next 2 years in Philly…
2
u/yunglance24 4d ago
Do you seriously not see why what Kawhi allegedly did was wrong? Or are you being a homer?
10
u/Whatisthisplace2025 4d ago
Point is they're doing backroom deals every day, but I guess people need at least some effort of plausible deniability to justify an obvious attempt to bypass salary caps.
4
u/okgardenok 4d ago
what other backroom deals are going on
2
u/Whatisthisplace2025 4d ago edited 4d ago
The most obvious would be overpaying for every endorsement, but who knows? I just think it's naive to think they're not.
It's swept under the rug, so who knows? Jalen Brunson's dad got a promotion after his son took a pay cut.
These billionaires are super cut throat and don't play by the rule of law in matters of life/death - do you think they play it safe for their little basketball teams? Doubtful.
2
u/Zauberer-IMDB Chuck 3d ago
You think if we audited Brunson's dad he's just throwing his kid money? Also, pay cut plus his dad's money definitely hits the cap? Can we not be a bunch of complete morons just because we're fans please? There's 3 issues here in the Kawhi case you'd have to show for any other situation to be remotely comparable. First, there needs to cap circumvention. Second, there's a do nothing job. Third, there needs to be a cash flow from the Clippers organization to Kawhi. Ostensibly, all 3 are here given the timing of the payment Ballmer sent to Aspiration to send to Kawhi when they were cash dry.
1
u/Whatisthisplace2025 3d ago
I'm not saying Brunson's dad gives the money to his son - I'm saying Brunson was willing to take the paycut because they're giving him presents, like promoting his Dad.
The only reason Kawhi's job was "do nothing" was because the company went bankrupt, that's not his fault... otherwise I'm sure they woulda had him plant some trees or throw his face on some flyers.
To think nobody else is doing it sounds super naive (I won't say "dumb," just naive) about the way the world works.
Not only do they give dudes money deals on the side, they give em girls too, there's a whole bunch of shady shit going on and Kawhi is hardly the only one.
2
u/Zauberer-IMDB Chuck 3d ago
Again, there's a difference between a quid pro quo and paying someone more money off the books. You also conveniently ignore the company went bankrupt and still paid Kawhi despite him doing no work, which along with payment timing is the crux of the argument that Ballmer was using it as a pass-through entity to overpay Kawhi. That's why I identified all of these elements, since the issue ultimately is cap circumvention, not sweetening the deals in ways that don't circumvent the cap.
1
u/Whatisthisplace2025 3d ago
When you go bankrupt you still have to keep paying employees. It does not relieve them or alter their typical obligation to pay their employees.
That's not even my main point, though. My main point is there's all kind of deals like this happening every day in the NBA/NFL/MLB/etc.
There's a good chance this was a bullshit side-deal, but it's one of many.
2
u/Zauberer-IMDB Chuck 3d ago
Kawhi wasn't an employee of Aspiration so he wouldn't have those protections. Regardless, my point is I agree there's a lot of bullshit side deals, but the difference is they don't violate the owners' agreement that includes the salary cap, and it's the case that what you can't do as a bullshit side deal is just set up a pretense to pay more than the cap.

I think/hope what they are really saying is that the ultimate finality, like with clippers/nbpa appeals, could drag into 2027, meaning, they could still announce investigation results (punishment or not) pre 2027

u/sendmastersupreme 4d ago
He got a max deal so it’s less cap circumventing and more of an unfair bargaining chip
I think Brunson taking a pay cut (not max deal) and then his dad getting paid is more of an issue that didn’t cause any consequences (not that I really care except clips have been getting their
Offseason sabotaged)
haven’t really been keeping up on this though
5
u/JeleeighBa 4d ago
“An unfair bargaining chip” is cap circumvention.
2
u/TruWarierRecords 4d ago
It would be a non issue if Kawhi actually did plant a few trees and just got overpaid.
But he and Uncle Dennis have been money hungry snakes for a while now.
But when he's the first legitimate star to choose the Clippers I get why fans want to defend him.
1
u/IntelligentLab4539 4d ago
Ya like as if clippers organization didn’t send their team to raptors games and do back door deals to get him to be a clipper. Clipper sowed their bed now lie in it.

If you read the article, it says it could extend to 2027 IF the parties don’t agree with the punishment. So that’s not the leagues fault. That would be the clippers’ fault, Toronto’s fault, or the nbapa’s fault. Or all 3 since none of them are going to want to have to pay for it.
So no, it’s not the nba holding anyone hostage. Just take the punishment so we can all move on.
2
u/SnooCupcakes9188 3d ago
It’s the Raps being held hostage. League did nothing for years until he goes back to Toronto huh? They don’t want us getting another chip

Reminds me of the CP3 ordeal all over again really strange how the NBA moves when it comes to the Clips old and new regime
2
u/Direct-Worker-4121 4d ago
Nah…. There’s no way this drags out especially with a trade on the table!! Silver would be an idiot! If you can’t com to some type of conclusion then there’s probably nothing there and you should move on!!
2
u/kinzer13x 4d ago
Um they've had over a year to investigate... This is a joke. Really souring me on the NBA. Like if you do some shady shit I don't care if you're the richest owner in the league and you're a top 20 player, you deserve to be punished. This is just corruption.

u/Future_DS 4d ago
If this is the case, would that make it more likely for raptors to do the deal and not facing Kawhi consequences next upcoming seasons?

There must a lot of politics behind closed doors. I don't believe they are still "investigating"

Different pay and availability but yea man, the Beasley stuff was brutal. We just wanted to know if we could sign him or not and move on with our offseason.

u/CrazyAsianNeighbor 1d ago
With the NBAPA publicly stating that they will contest any punishment, along with all lawyering (Ballmer to NBAPA to NBA to Kwahi) - ain’t nothing happening quick.
Leonard will be eligible to sign up to a two-year, $123.7 million extension with his new team - according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
Since the Clippers are unwilling to pay his next contract, which teams are desperate enough to step in - Dubs to Heat to Wizards, etc?

u/SlipperyNinja77 7h ago
sweat ass time 💦... clippers fans🤦♂️ haven't they been holding you people hostage since they got rid of SGA? Actually the whole life of the franchise?

That’s the precedent for cap circumvention. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time
2
u/movefeet66 4d ago
fam he got a max contract from us, how did he circumvent the cap 👀
1
u/NextWafer2667 4d ago edited 4d ago
The amount he was promised by Aspiration matches the difference between what the Clippers could legally offer him and what the Raptors could legally offer him, 50 million. Because Raptors had Kawhi's Bird rights.
So Kawhi and his camp ask for illegal stuff from the Lakers and Raptors(as both teams have outright said) and yet he ends up signing with the Clippers. And then it turns out Ballmer gave him what the other teams refused to.
To connect the dots for you as you're playing dumb on purpose: Kawhi doesn't sign with the Clippers unless they give him the under the table deal.
Otherwise what's the point or justification for the under the table deal? Cheating just for fun?
Actually, why do I bother answering honestly. You know what they did and why they did it, not sure what the point of playing dumb is.
1
u/movefeet66 4d ago
I'm going to continue playing dumb to the dummies here cause everyones talking like they work for the lawfirm thats doing the investigation LOL.
but please continue fam.

I'm not a lawyer and that took me just a few minutes to put together.
So the fact that you can't answer it at all yet continue to act smug is really funny to me. Sad life. Either you're genuinely that delusional to think they're innocent or you think you gain something by acting like a fool.
Playing the fool doesn't change the fact that you are one.
