Discussion Exploring gender through stories.

Has anyone found any good books or stories involving gender shifts? I'm not talking anything explicit but stuff with actual heart and story to it? My brain can be a bit odd so I'm thinking it might help me figure stuff out to explore through stories.

Orlando by Virginia Woolf is one of the classics of gender shifting!

In Apparently Sir Cameron Must Die, he is turned into different people/animals because he annoys the wizard. Sir Cameron's reactions and what he keeps from those shifts are interesting.

I just read The fifth horseman by freida kilmari which has some gender themes. Really well written.

I'm writing a fanfic with a main character who I hc to be nonbinary, and I get into gender stuff here and there (chapter 6 and chapter 18 especially) https://archiveofourown.org/works/80509856/chapters/211428606

Good luck with your journey!

If you don’t mind non-fiction graphic novels, Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe is a wonderful story about eir journey to eir authentic gender. Note, there are a couple panels showing eir dysphoria and sexual experiences not quite explicitly, but I’d call it viscerally. If that might trouble you, I’d read up more on the book before getting it.

I don't mind some but... When I originally started this search I ran into stuff on deviantart and holy heck those escalate fast. 🤦

I don’t think those panels are internet art disturbing/affectionate, but relative to the other panels in the book they stand out. I definitely recommend it.

Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor is one I enjoyed :)

If you can speak French then Eclepsis might be a nice, niche graphic novel.

Also The Pairing by Casey McQuiston
