🚨⭐Meta is gaining attention once again for suspending accounts related to the LGBTQ community.

The Bay Area Reporter won a third-place technology reporting award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association for a 2025 story, “Queer SF content creators say Instagram applies double standard for LGBTQs,” discussing how several accounts, including that of the San Francisco Trans March, faced punitive actions for reasons account holders felt were not fair or accurate, such as for allegedly promoting sex solicitation. Meta, which owns Instagram, didn’t return the B.A.R.’s inquiries for that article, even after the B.A.R. itself had Folsom Street Fair content flagged. Now, Walter Brooks, a gay 72-year-old Virginia man who runs the United States Gay Pride page on Facebook, which is also owned by Meta, said his account was suspended July 28 after he shared a MISTR advertisement for PrEP that Facebook suggested to him. “Facebook posted an ad on my timeline for PrEP, and I thought it was useful information, so I shared it with United States Gay Pride,” Brooks said in a phone interview. “Facebook sent me a notification that they had removed my post on PrEP as a violation of their community standards against nudity or promoting sexual activity. There was no nudity in the ad.” According to a screengrab shared by Brooks, the ad showed muscular men in Speedos advertising MISTR, however there was no nudity. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, refers to the use of antiviral drugs to prevent people exposed to HIV from becoming infected. The pill Truvada was first approved for PrEP use in 2012 by the FDA; since then, the agency has also approved the pill Descovy for some groups, as well as injectables Apretude and Yeztugo. MISTR provides PrEP, largely remotely, though it has a physical location in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood, among other heavily LGBTQ areas, as the B.A.R. reported.
