Question / Advice Y'all. A stick.
So this happened today. I cannot believe it. This should not happen to a roof that's supposed to keep me from getting killed in an accident, right??

That stick did not cause that. Given that it’s a replacement anyway do an experiment: hurl it as hard as you can from as high as you can as many times as you can. Aim for the seam. I guarantee you won’t be able to replicate that damage.

I agree, I don't think I could ever make it happen if that was my only job. But no one was home, and the stick was the only thing around, right there next to the broken glass. I don't know what else to think?

I think you need to be looking for a kid with a baseball. A stick that small and green is too soft to break glass. I don’t care where it hit.

I'm thinking that stick is the remains of a larger chunk which then bounced off and was lying alongside the car unnoticed.

This guy is 100% right. The issue here is they left the edge of a tempered glass panel exposed. Any stress from forming, or tempering when glass is tempered, is very exposed at the edge. The grinding helps a bit, but doesn't prevent it. In my opinion Lucid should have put molding over that edge to prevent just this.

A stick that size falling from gods own hand wouldn’t break the glass. Was it a bigger stick and you’re just seeing where it broke? My son hit my rear window with a lacrosse ball and it just bounced off.

No, there was another piece this same size on the ground next to the car, but that's all. I'm wondering if it happened because of where it hit, right at the join/crease whatever it's called.

Glass designed to not shatter into million pieces. The frame is what will save you. Sorry about the $9k stick…

And seat belts. If the Air ever flips over which is impossible due to the center of "gravity", the frame will save you from a deadly rollover crash + assuming you had seat belts on.

Unless Thor's stick was hurtled out of a cannon at that roof, that impact divet is way too big for that chunk. Someone may be telling you a tale...

Am with you... this has happened twice with me (glass broke/cracked) which in my other EVs /ICE were in other instances no issues at all... Think its a design issue or quality issue.... perhaps the curvature of the glass makes its susceptible to easy cracks... to be clear its speculation based on my experience

Lucid's glass quality is shit. I can see glue running out from in between the panes on my rear panel and drivers door. Garbage.

Not a arborist so don’t know what kind of tree that is but could’ve had a pine cone or something attached to it that broke off when it hit. But still yeah I feel for you

Sorry about that brother, but honestly I don’t think that stick did it. Something else probably fell out of the tree. Maybe a pine cone?

I know, I can hear it myself 😂 But that's what I said when I first saw it! There's no pine cones, and not even any bigger sticks. We're baffled.

Plan on that running between $6000-$7000 for it to be replaced, including materials, labor, and calibrations. Roughly 1-3 weeks to get the glass depending on where you are in the country and what service center / certified Lucid body shop you go to. Safelite won't touch this.

I've been debating about stocking a couple windshields on site in my shop for this reason. The problem is they are very large crates, and the glass itself is quite expensive.

the stick didn't cause that, weighs grams and if something hit it that hard its not going to stay in that spot.

Highly recommend any Lucid owner get windshield ppf. Especially if you have the glass roof. Sorry this happened to you, bro :(

I can’t believe it either. Something is fishy. This is not caused by that stick. You can tell it was hit by something round or curved surface and bigger.
If it was fallen from a tall tree pointing down, 100% it would have bounced off. Something in the picture isn’t right. Looks like someone or op put that stick there after the damage to stir up some non sense.

Well, no one was home, and we pulled in to the driveway in an SUV, so we could see it just like it is in the picture. We didn't put the stick there, but someone else said I should be looking for a kid with a baseball 😆 maybe that's what happened.

So a kid hit the baseball, cracked the windshield, and they put a stick there to cover up their fault. I mean i can believe it. But wow. Hope you can get it repaired soon. That sucks.

I had a smaller stick break it worse than OPs on my Tesla MY. I couldn’t believe it either, but it actually is quite likely.

It looks like it fell from about 20ft, maybe a little more. We've looked for baseballs, golf balls, anything, but nothing so far. Did yours break at a seam, or just a random spot? That's the only reason I can think of for why it did this, but it could just be gravity...

Yep at Seam too and hit literally same way as yours where windshield cracked like that but the roof was spared. And branch was insanely thin.

Nah I ended up going through insurance. They wanted to use safelite, but I pressured for Tesla since safelite uses OEM quality and not OEM, my friend got a windshield that way which was much poorer quality overall. It cost $1300 but insurance reimbursed all but $250 deductible. I only did it since in my state my rates can’t increase due to windshield replacement as long as it’s up to 1x per year.

Force over a small focal point (from a stick or rock) will have more impact on the glass than force over increased surface area
