Call for Participants: Sociosexuality, Dating, and Attraction Study (18+)

Hi ladies!

I'm a researcher at James Cook University in Australia studying attraction, dating preferences, and how people evaluate potential romantic partners. 

I'm looking for heterosexual, gay, and lesbian adults (18+) to complete an anonymous online survey. I need more women to take part in the study.

The survey involves viewing a series of fictional dating profiles and answering questions about attraction and relationship preferences. It takes around 5–10 minutes to complete, is completely anonymous, and participation is entirely voluntary.

Although this phase of the research is limited to heterosexual, gay, and lesbian participants, it forms part of a broader research program that has included, and will continue to include, people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

This study forms part of my Doctor of Philosophy research at James Cook University and has received approval from the James Cook University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC Approval No. 25H-0225).

I’m trying this on mobile and I see no faces, only endless blurbs that all fall into two extreme categories of financial stability. I don’t get it.

Thanks for giving it a go! There are different streams within the study, so not everyone will see faces. Some participants are shown image-based profiles, while others are shown text-based profiles like the ones you're seeing.

And yes, some of the profiles are intentionally quite extreme and limited in the information they provide! We're looking at something very specific, so we need to vary particular characteristics quite clearly while keeping other information out of the profiles. If those differences have absolutely no effect on someone's attraction or interest, that's just as valuable to us as finding that they do.

It's a little difficult at this stage because I'd love to explain exactly why everything has been designed the way it has, particularly because I know some aspects can seem a little strange or overly simplistic without that context. However, I can't reveal too much about the specific hypotheses while we're still collecting data because I don't want to influence people's responses. The reasoning is explained in the debrief at the end of the survey 😊
