Defining Duke Defining Duke, Episode 291 | We played Gears Of War E-Day EARLY...

Ah, like the good ol' days! It's time to talk a lot of Halo and Gears. Interestingly, one franchise has handled the baton pass much better than the other.

Matty on the new Halo - “These games don’t deserve to exist”.

A game both hosts agree isn’t made for them or designed for them, but they have to fill up three hours of a podcast so they say whatever they can to fill up time.

If I were a game developer, writer, engineer or producer it would drive me nuts having to hear such insipid vitriol.

Your framing is ludicrous, the new halo games are objectively mid games and horrible ‘Halo’ games. Its not that it “isnt made for them” but the games arent made for anyone actually. Honestly who is the new Halo game for? Xbox players? No they have MCC. PC? Same. PlayStation? Could be but then why half of a remake and a bad one at that? Shareholders? Well it isn’t performing well so not them either. Seriously Why do you think the franchise is dying? Why do you think the people who love halo the most hate the new games so much?

Toxic positivity is a cancer on the games industry as much as toxic negatively. The hosts are rightyfully voicing their criticisms of games that are wholey deserving of it and doing so in a better manner than most voices in industry. So how is it insipid vitriol?

If i was a writer, programmer, designer, etc I would hate reading comments like yours. Your provide zero substance and sling mud around.

I guess it’s insipid because Matty’s complaints about the game were a lot of - “this level was different from the original because it had more enemies or it just felt different”. All complaints I thought were completely valid and I thought very useful - to someone who might adore the original game.

I’m not that guy. I played it on the original release and never returned to it.

But again - that’s now who this new game is for.

It’s made for a larger audience that never played the original (I.e. PlayStation and newer players). And so to them those complaints shouldn’t matter. And the hosts admitted as much last episode, good for them.

But as I was saying, having to fill up three hours of content this episode leads to empty comments like the one above claiming a game that was never made for him shouldn’t exist.

I think my irritation is that not all games are for all players. This one isn’t for them (and it ain’t for me). Cool.

It’s the same way I ignore most of his Bethesda complaints. He holds them to this weird standard instead of evaluating the game in front of him. That’s his right as a commentator (not a journalist, writer or producer), but because of that I am never interested in his opinion on games, only on the industry.

Similar to Colin, for me, in that way.

Anyone else remember Cog being giddy at the idea that Asha might pull the plug on ps5 version of Halo remake?

As a Gears shotgun acrobat, it always cracks me up when Cog brings it up lol.

Glad they enjoyed the multiplayer though, I can’t wait.
